Trending on Twitter: #CowabungaPGN Let's make this game happen by letting Rocksteady know we want it! Since the NeoGAF community helped me make the article in the first place, I thought I'd let you all know that I e-mailed Rocksteady again last night and contacted them via Twitter as well.

And there it is. The rock bottom.

In fact Paul, while you're at it, why don't you send Naughty Dog an email saying how rad it would be if they made a new Kid Icarus game for the WiiU.

Seeing as you're all about making stuff happen.

OK but I've got $20 riding on this being true. If you're wrong, you'll not only be letting all of us down, you'll be letting me down in particular.

Really? You don't say.

Yeah, people, especially gamers, really forget stuff about license owning and rights. Then again they themselves let companies fuck them...

Stop being such a wet blanket. It's all in good fun. Even if the rumor's not true I've had $20 of entertainment from it, haha.

That's fair enough.

I just hope you didn't bet with Paul Gale himself.

Perhaps he's running an elaborate ponzi scheme and now you're in at the ground floor!

Saw this thread for a while, but I decided not to go into it, cuz I thought....

"Eventually, someone's gonna realize Warner Bros does not own the rights to TMNT in any shape, way or form."

No it was a gentleman's wager with Stumpopakow.

Another poor soul caught in his web. The man is abusing one compulsive gambler after another.

I only ever make absolutely braindead obvious bets, and I always seem to find people on GAF willing to take them. Hasn't failed me yet.

I offered $100 of my money-against-$10 of opponent's that Kinect would sell at least a million in a year or something like that. I got 2 takers for that one! 2 people bet against that!

(edit: aaand wrong tab)

Although I know this is unlikely to happen, but I would hope that if something like this went through that it would have the voice cast of the original movie and most definitely bring back Elias Koteas for Casey Jones.

Since this thread is getting quite a bit of attention I thought I would post this little gem that game out last month.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1613770073/?tag=neogaf0e-20

It is the first 7 issues of the original TMNT comic with the Raph one shot (the first appearance of Casey Jones) a bit pricey, but great for an old school fan and it is a nice way (and probably the cheapest way at this point) for someone to get into the old books.

Huh, didn't realize they finally got around to releasing these. I was hoping they'd do it for what seems like a decade now.

I suppose its not completely impossible to go "dark and gritty" while still being based around the first cartoon. These guys did it. But it does seem a little weird. Splinter/Yoshi missions also calls back to the goofy old cartoon. Splinter being Yoshi was true in the first cartoon and the Archie comic series, but he was Yoshi's pet rat in the movies, original Mirage series, and the 2003 cartoon. Mutagen mutating humans into animals seems completely limited to those two interpretations.

When the TMNT IP was up for sale, I was kind of hoping Marvel would have bought it. Especially since the Turtles are a direct byproduct of Daredevil's origin.

Honestly not sure if I would want this or another Arkham game. Arkham City left so many things open with Scarecrow, Ras 'al Gul,
Harley being prego
, Black Mask and Azrael. But a "dark" TMNT could be neat..

Didn't know it was up for sale. Was it after the previous attempt at resurrecting the franchise?

Peter Laird just got tired of managing the whole franchise.

The biggest part of TMNT (toy sales) reached a low point as well.

The entire property, aside from some comic publishing rights, was sold to Nickelodeon for $60 million dollars. It's kind of sad, because it was probably worth over a billion in its prime.

It does paint a picture on how "informed" people are regarding TMNT - it's like how people think only MMPR is Power Rangers.

Yes, not many people know the minutiae of the IP because there is not a lot of interest in the IP. It's all based around hazy childhood memories, for most people. There's a distant nostalgia but not prevalent or resonant enough to really drive a lot of business. Power Rangers is a good comparison, as it's another property people have fond memories of.....but they aren't really motivated to go out and see a movie or buy a game based on it.

Dropping Batman for TMNT would be like dumping a supermodel so you can date a frumpy barista. At this point I think Rocksteady is just too big to be considering low-tier properties. They can't really gamble the livelihoods of so many people on 90's fads.

I wouldn't mind seeing or playing it though. I'm not sure how the combat would be since Arkham Asylum's fighting is basically "mash buttons an do awesome stuff". TMNT needs something a little more in depth.

Did Kevin Eastman make more money by cashing out sooner?

It was basically after Peter Laird (series co-creator) and Mirage sold the property off. In a nutshell, he was "tired" of it, and so put it up for bids two years ago.

On one hand, TMNT being freed from Laird has probably done a lot of good, as you could basically say he was stifling the property in a lot of ways. But on the other hand, with the series being wholly owned by Nickelodeon/Viacom now, it's anybody's guess what will happen next. Though, I can say I'm enjoying the IDW series, to say the least!

Given Nickelodeon and THQ's history together, if ANYBODY could make this type of game happen at this point, it'd be THQ commissioning one of their studios (Vigil?) to make this happen. But who can say, at this point?

TMNT has been a property that has almost always been in public eye since inception:

TV Shows
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987-1996): 193 episodes
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation (1997-1998): 26 episodes
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003-2009): 156 episodes
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012): 26 episodes*

* has yet to air

Movies:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990): $200 million WW
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II (1991): $78 million domestic (WW not available)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993): $42 million domestic (WW not available)
TMNT (2007): $95 million WW

Ninja Turtles isn't Batman, but for some reason you appear to think it's the fucking Street Sharks or something, where there it's a property from back in the day no one gives a shit about. You're wrong. A good proper game would do well, believe me on that. It would unite both the fanbase of the old, and the current one.

Your comparison to PR is actually patheticly wrong. Power Rangers has had a period of about a year where it wasn't on TV. The current series, Power Rangers: Samurai is the largest boy's action series in terms of popularity. This isn't the first time post-MMPR that has happened. The reason why you don't care is because these properties aren't targeting the nostalgia market in a huge way, but going after the current kids of today. A good, big push would bring in every part of the fandom together. Transformers is a great example of that. It's a franchise that has almost always been on TV as well, and had constant success with kids but went huge with a movie that attempted to target everyone by starting from square one. The 2007 TMNT movie didn't start from square one, and thus had its appeal clipped (it was CGI film that attempted to be both a sequel to the live action series, and related to the then current TV series) but was still somewhat successful.

Not to mention merchandising. Go into your local Hot Topic store and count the amount of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-related merch you'll find in there.

Then leave and furiously scrub yourself.

I never said that nobody gave a shit, but the property wasn't worth gambling with a Rocksteady-sized budget and development efforts. None of the recent TMNT games have done that well. It should probably tell you something that the rights to the entire TMNT franchise sold for less money than the 2007 movie even grossed. Shit, Arkham Asylum probably made more money than TMNT was sold for.

It just seems bizarre, unlikely, and irresponsible for Rocksteady to tackle a shaky franchise like that. Like any other successful developer they'll probably be stuck making the same game over and until the franchise dies out.

Are we really supposed to evaluate the viability of a franchise by how much dumb merchandise Hot Topic stocks? Maybe Rocksteady should do a Monster High videogame...

Wait, hold up... What!?

As TreIII, the other posters, and I have said - Laird sold the franchise from Mirage to Nick. Nick will create that (so far) crappy show while currently there's a good comic run by IDW.

Mirage is non-existent anymore I think.

If Ghostbusters can make a comeback than TMNT sure can. TMNT is WAAAAAY more popular and more active than the Ghostbusters IP. Two best franchises of all time IMO.

Man I hope this is true. If it is, I want them to take the Turtles back to their comic roots. That is, April needs to be a hacker with purple hair, and not a news reporter.

...maybe take it back to a bit after the roots then. take it back to the trunk or something.

If people doubt TMNT's strength this might put it into perspective

-The property itself is one of the most, if not the most, successful properties from independent creators

-The 1990 movie was the most successful independent film ever when it was released

Though it's now mixed in with a bunch of the established powers in TV, movies, comics, videogames, etc., it has come further than most company-produced properties.

Um, WHAT at that spoiler. Where the fuck does it say that?

Spoilers for Arkham City!
If the player goes into Harley's office in the Sionis Steel Mill, they will see a pregnancy test next to her old outfit from Arkham Asylum. If they zoom in, it will show that the test is postive. Also, if the player finds this before the game ends, Harley will sing a version of "Hush Little Baby", suggesting that the baby has already been born.

It was too good to be true. Beyond just the license being held by Nick/Viacom, I doubt they'd want their kids-oriented reboot to be confused with some darker, disconnected video game version. It confuses the brand.

Duffyside rumor mill, reporting in with this tidbit we can say with 99.997% certainty!

Rocksteady are indeed NOT making a Ninja Turtles game. They are in fact... wait for it... making another Batman game. It will be called "Batman: Arkham (Something)" and release in October or November of 2013 on PS3 and 360. Our source, who insists on being referred to simply as "C. Sense" — or "Common" for short — says a PC version will follow shortly after.
