The Light of El Cantare
This sounds like an optimal time for me to begin a Gintama marathon. Yeah, beginning that right now.

Nisemonogatari 06

That Detective Conan gag was awesome.

Moretsu Pirates 06

Loved the boarding, especially
the way Kane oversold the gunshot.

Lagrange 06

So much good stuff here, Madoka's face, "Harem night!"...but the overdramatic guy's reaction to the energy drink is clearly the winner.

Hello, AnimeGaf.

So, I'm not a huge anime fan, my interest basically lived and died with Toonami/Adult Swim.

For some reason, I decided to use the new Xbox 360 Youtube App, and decided to search Case Closed, one of my favorite memories from the CN days. I watched the first CC movie, and thought it was pretty awesome. Lot of great things I remembered from the show were in there.

So, I've come to learn that somehow the show is still going on today, but I was more curious to know what Gaf's take on the show is, and how did you all feel about the first movie?
It's a great first movie to a great series. Though, admittedly, the one directly following it happens to be my favorite of all 15 of them (16 in April).

As far the show itself goes, it's really come a long way and if you have the means (a couple of years, in other words) I highly recommend it.

So, as if you might not have been able to tell, I'm revisiting some old blogs that I stopped checking up on a few months ago. Most of the time I'm remembering exactly why I gave up on most of these - because they're bad. Even when they're not objectively bad (as in, the blog is poorly written) they generally fail to contain any kind of coherent insight into the matter that they are discussing.

This isn't inherently bad - there's nothing wrong with posting your reactions to anime, films, games or whatever. I do it all the time - but I also read enough of it in here so I have no reason to 'seek it out' so to speak. Sadly, most of the blogs that are actually 'good' are updated fairly infrequently or, as the case may be, never.

Case in point - I'm intrigued by how anyone can write at lengthy about Un-Go (http://chaostangent.com/2012/01/un-go/) without pointing out the shows bizarre direction and erratic approach to storytelling.

Does anyone have any good blogs to recommend, beyond http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/index.php and http://aninomiyako.wordpress.com ?

Speaking of all the weird blog posts about about Nisemonogatari - http://chaostangent.com/2012/01/3-episode-taste-test-nisemonogatari/

SHAFT and director Akiyuki Shinbo get a pass here for their frequent fan-service and inappropriate nudity because, while it always makes you feel dirty, there’s an element of class that overpowers the guilt.
This sounds pretty close to firehawk12's view that because SHAFT are making fun of fanservice, it's okay for them to fill their shows full of smut. It seems like lots of people are willing to make strange, logic bending excuses for SHAFT. I'm not sure what they've done to achieve such trust from their fanbase.

Pretty dark stuff for such an upbeat show. Maybe I should read the manga. Really liking all the mind game stuff vs the usual dbz punching for a few eps.

Further proof in how this re-do is inferior to the original HxH, by shounen standards it's supposed to be rather grim all round and it's completely lost that aspect in this remake.

I rewatched the first episode of Nadesico because of Rinne no Lagrange. The opening is so great:

http://youtu.be/0ZjOjPvvAxQ

And the ending song was pretty lovely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0uF3glbMqo

I will rewatch the entire show after Kamichu!, even the February was the 00s anime month for me.

You've repeatedly mentioned Nadesico when discussing Rinne no Lagrange, but perhaps you could clarify what you feel links these two works? Bare in mind that I haven't seen Nadesico, although I keep meaning to sit down and watch it because I hear it discussed so often.

This show is kind of terrible. Even the action rarely looks good, and every other aspect of the show is pretty bad. The dialogue in particular is generally stupid, making the characters unlikeable. Lots of yuri though.

Her punch at the end was totally ripped from Big O.

Miniskirt Bodacious Pirates 6

Easily the best episode so far. Excellent pacing, plenty of action, and some more information about Marika's world. The highlight of the episode,
the pirate raid
, was really well done, with almost a
stage-play feel to it, particularly with the reaction of the audience, which worked excellently. It gives the sense that pirating is in many ways outdated and archaic, which the speech about pirates being a dieing breed only reconfirms.

Marika in a pirate outfit is so hnnnnnngh.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you never pursue an interest beyond it's appearances on your television? I only ask because a large generation of people grew up watching, say, Dragon Ball or Gundam Wing on TV but lots of those people didn't embrace the wider anime market. With anime not even appearing on TV anymore I wonder how this will affect the wider fandom in the long-run.

Did you have no desire to hunt anything else down? Was it too much effort to locate? Did you just watch these shows because they were convenient?

Nadesico is somewhat similar (genre-wise), but is considerably more parody than Rinne. I'd say Nadesico is the better of the two though, so you should definitely check it out.

Also Hi Anime-Gaf.

Im honestly not seeing the Nadesico - Rinne comparisons at all myself.

Then again I love Nadesico to death (Nozomi where are my god damn BDs?!?) and I'm not really a fan of Rinne so maybe I'm intentionally disassociating the two.

I casually watched Detective Conan when it was on TV for a little while. I find I tire of shows that follow a set formula pretty quickly. The fact that there's zero chance of actual plot resolution doesn't help.

Her best quality is her dialogue, and the talented actress who delivers those lines. SHAFT doesn't deserve any credit for that!

What about the voice director? A talented actress can still deliver a flat character, and a good director can change that.

You know, I pretty heavily criticized the fact that they
revealed in the first episode that Hibiki would die at the end of the series
, but now it's almost the main reason that I keep watching because
I want to see how everything goes to absolute shit in the next few episodes
. Nothing in Symphogear feels particularly inspired or well-executed to me, but
there's still that to look forward to
.

SHAFT doesn't play a role in casting? You know, I think casting voice actors might be the one thing they actually do consistently well.

You're quite correct, those are vital too. I'm just too busy trying to stick the knife in them for their animation and consistency problems.

Quite. Don't know how long I'll hold out here either as my favorite Gundam series was X. Also, I'm unable to join in in the Anime-GAF SHAFT hatred because, for some misbegotten reason, I rather enjoyed Tsukuyomi Moon Phase.

Poor SHAFT, can't get a break. Everyone hates on them, and all they do is make smutty shows about overage lolis.

Both shows have the same straight-forward direction and the change from the generally optimistic mood to serious elements is pretty similar, even Nadesico was a little bit more parody than Lagrange.

So you're starting a mutiny against the monocles and coming over to the mustaches?

I haven't seen either of those shows and we don't really discuss Gundam that frequently in here (of course, it has it's own thread for that) so you'll probably survive.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I've never played Gundam Vs. (bizarrely) so I don't quite understand why it would annoy people. Does it have a cheap move, perchance?
In Gundam EXVS, each team has a gauge that determines the amount of times their suits can respawn before losing. Each suit also has an associated cost, with higher cost units usually having stronger weaponry, superior mobility, more health, etc. Team gauges are 6000 points shared between the two players. Suit costs go from 3k, 2.5k, 2k and 1k.

Gouf is a 1k unit. However, with relatively little effort he can be exceptionally effective. His cost efficiency is pretty skewed, and it makes him very annoying to take down because you'll have to fight him, at worst, 5 times.

It's not like I hate SHAFT, at all, I've certainly watched enough of their shows to consider myself 'a fan' of their works. However, that doesn't mean I'm just going to accept whatever they throw at me without first considering it's worth.

I love pretty much all of Detective Conan, but I can understand how it'd be intimidating to jump in at this point, since there's over 600 episodes and 15 movies. I do recommend the show if you aren't daunted, just take it slow and work your way up a few episodes at a time. As far as movies go, I like the 1st one, I like the mystery of the 2nd one the best, and overall the 3rd is my favorite. Most of the movies are basically like extended episodes anyway so they're all pretty good, though admittedly Conan is becoming more and more of an action hero in the movies as they go along. XD

Oh, right, that makes sense. I guess I was right, somewhat, he sounds pretty cheap. I'm glad that the suits strong though - it actually matches the way its displayed in the show!

I think that the only SHAFT show that I ever actively disliked was Maria+Holic Alive. All the rest have run the gamut from "this is pretty okay" to "IT CHANGED MY LIFE". They've found the perfect balance between classy and trashy, though they've gone slightly overboard with the latter in Nisemonogatari.

I avoid disliking SHAFT shows by not watching the ones I know I won't. It works out pretty well.

I wish I could do the same for noitaminA.

Thanks, AnimeGaf! I'm glad you guys enjoyed the CC/Conan series as much as I did!

Did you have no desire to hunt anything else down? Was it too much effort to locate? Did you just watch these shows because they were convenient?

Hm...that's a very good question.

I was younger (obviously) at the time, and I think I ate up eating anything that Toonami gave me. I was introduced into the whole Anime scene through DBZ in fact, and I remember Gundam reaffirming my interest in the medium.

I loved everything about the shows though. I loved the action and drama from DBZ, DB, Gundam, and others. Then I loved the weirdness and sexual friction of something like Kenshin Muyo or Inuyasha. I loved the different style of Lupin the 3rd or Case Closed. Obviously there were more reasons to love each of these shows, but these were some hard points I remember. Shoot, I even would watch Sailor Moon even though it was fairly cheesy in most aspects.

Then, Toonami died out, and I got older. I remember one Anime....damn you guys are going to want to kill me for this...it was something about this wandering red haird swordsman....he was like ridiculously good with a sword. (You all are screaming the name at the screen at this point.)

That was the last Anime I remember ever thinking (Okay, it's on at 5pm, so I have to watch that shit then.) but slowly that faded away. I kind of slowly faded away from enjoying TV all together, and so my enjoyment of Anime followed.

So I think it was a mixture of things:

1.) Toonami was dying, and thus the only real connection I had with these shows was going along with it.

2.) I was getting to that phase where watching Anime/Cartoons wasn't cool...dude. (Not saying that was right; in fact, saying it was stupid to ever think that way.)

3.) Didn't have the free time I used to.

I think if a show was to come on at a decent time, I would give it a shot, but who am I to say? I don't watch that much TV anymore, but isn't that the beautiful thing about the internet? Even if you've missed a show's episode or entire series, you can find them online, whether it be through Youtube or what not.

Hell, I watch some of the most deplorable and boring content on TV nearly every week in wrestling. I've always loved wrestling because of some things it had in common with that Toonami anime. Big characters, big storylines, everything is overblown, usually to a stupid point, but you love it. You love that everything is settled honorable, or some crazy shenanigans go down and the bad guy wins/gets away.

Too be honest, if I were to ever start watching some Anime again, I would have no idea where to even start. I was thinking about buying some of the DBZ Blu-Rays, or possibly watch GT, since I never had in the past. I've also been contemplating getting back into Case Closed (thanks to a Gaffer, you know who you are [: ).

College is busy, but I think the best thing to do is let go of some steam by yourself sometimes. I've always thought balance was a good motto for life. It's nice to go out and party with friends, but then it's nice to sit at home and play some games by yourself. Anyways, all I'm saying is that I've been contemplating watching some shows again, but I have no idea where to start, or with what.

Holy shit, I bet you didn't want a WALL-O-TEXT reply like that, haha. Sorry! Hope you get an answer out of that incoherent rambling I just did.

Yea that suit was pretty awesome
since its pilot was a true boss and wasn't some snot nosed brat who just read the instruction manual either).

One of the reasons i always found 08th MS team refreshing.

So, I'm still watching Guilty Crown... Lord knows why. It's getting better, I suppose. If better means worse. I suppose it's the asspulls out the wazoo, complete 180's and extremely stupid plot choices that keep bringing me back for more. I think I like losing braincells in short, 24 minute sessions, one week at a time.
