Playstation Vita western launch thread | It only does everything, everywhere.

So after 6 days with the Vita, the "oooo shiny new thing" phase has passed for me.
There are a few small problems that really bother me and it's just... I don't know. The games I really want aren't coming anytime soon, if at all. And I'm just here with this thing that doesn't behave the way I want it to.

I don't want to sound down on it, because I'm still excited for what games may come. But it's just... I really wish this thing worked better in some other areas.

Way to be super-descriptive.

What exactly doesn't work as you want it to...? And, I can't help but ask, why you would buy a console when you know the games you want aren't coming out for a while?

Did you post those screen grabs you promised to? Didn't see them, but could easily have missed them I guess.

While the system is amazing, I have one little disappointment: none of the games I got look very good. Uncharted and Hot Shots Golf both look disappointingly bad due to being rendered at a non-native resolution. I seriously hope developers cut down on the shader usage and focus on pushing 960x544 instead of resorting to non-native resolution, which ends up looking overly pixelated and blurry on this screen.

So many potentially awesome games there.

I was wondering if anybody has played or know a lot about Ragnarok Odyssey? I was wondering if its the type of RPG that is explorable, with a large world that is fun to walk around in? Some of the screenshots make the world seem huge.

Anyways, I'm wondering which console to invest in: 3DS or PSVita. It doesn't seem like the Vita is going to do very well, based on the hype/word from around the net, or something to that effect. But that's a lot of guessing and such I suppose.

3DS has the 3D screen which sounds cool, but I'm not sure if I'll like it or not, and Vita has the best game lineup at the moment (In my opininion of course.).

However, 3DS has the Resident Evil game to itself at the moment, and reviewers say it's almost, or that it IS like a full console game in terms of content, I suppose. Any advice? Currently I guess I'm leaning towards PSVita.

Well this is a Vita-Thread, so what answer do you expect? :p

Ya, Vita could have a slow start, but word of mouth could really help it. Almost everyone, who sees it in action, likes it.

I would buy a vita, but it depends on you.

If you can resist, wait till E3, listen to reveals and decide then. If Sony is not stupid again they should give this year 80% to Vita, and prep PS4 for next E3. On the other hand, Nintendo is busy with WiiU, and that has to mean some resources are switched towards their HD console, and not 3DS.

Then of course new Zelda 3DS gets announced and we all run into the store to buy 3DS.

I'm a bit confused on how I copy PSP content from my PS3 to my Vita. I run Content Manager on my PSV but it still won't let me copy PSP content over. It tells me there is no PS3 connected when I try.

Games are Little Big Planet PSP and Modnation PSP.

Do neither work?

It will take years to determine if this platform will be a "success" or "failure" (however that may be defined on Internet message boards)... and if the Vita fails like the PSP, we're going to be laughing in ecstacy for the next 7 years!

I own both. For me, if I could have only one, I would chose the Vita without hesitation.

Do you get the "You are connected to the PSVita" grey screen up on your television from the PS3 when you connect your Vita? And when did you download these games to your PS3? You might want to re-download them afresh and see if that solves the problem...

I copied four games over from my PS3 yesterday - including Prinny and Peace Walker - and I didn't have any errors or problems at all... and Prinny was an "old" download - it's been sitting on my PS3 since it was released...

Had another freeze this morning - while Hot Shots was loading the next hole (on the score summary screen), it, well, never stopped loading. It became unresponsive and I had to power cycle the system.

I LOVE the Vita, but in the less than 24 hours I've had it, I've already had the system freeze up twice on me. C'mon now...

Well, Sony is doing everything right in terms of hardware/software design this time around. Honestly, if this thing doesn't do well, it's because of the current portable landscape, and I think it will start to spell the end for dedicated portable gaming.

How are you guys liking the analog sticks on the machine does it feel nice playing uncharted with them

I noticed the same thing in HSG. Lumines looks great though at least.

...

Also, LOL at Sony for trying to sell Little Deviants for 30 bucks, should just be a pack-in. Even then it's terrible.

That's OLED for you. Someone posted a comparison screen a few pages back.
912719_0.jpg

I get that too, I just thought it was from the screen protector.

I tried a few more games, and they all look really good. Except for Megaman X and Ratchet and Clank. They look like ass. ESPECIALLY Ratchet and Clank. The game has a murky color scheme and that does not look good on the Vita. Megaman at least has really nice colors, but blown up on the Vita screen you get a good view of all the jaggies.

Hell yeah - if owning a failure console means getting library like PSP and PS3 have then I don't ever want to buy market leaders again ;)

A tech question:

I'm planning to buy a Vita wifi only. It will work with a hotspot using WPA2 PSK security? My PSP isn't compatible with this kind of security and my android phone only have this option.

Yeah, this is the reason why I hope that the current "gaming community" buys this thing.
They made everything right with software AND hardware, this time.
Should be a good sign for everybody, if this thing "sells"!

I find this hilarious... I spent all day yesterday playing on my new Vita, dragging it with me and showing Uncharded to everyone I could find. Every single person I showed the game to was completely floored by how beautiful it looked. Personally, I think that it's gorgeous, and I haven't heard otherwise from anyone in person... It's amazing! GAF-bound pixel counters notwithstanding...

They are different than the sticks on the Dual Shock - very sensitive and light, with a short throw - but I found them very easy to get used to, and I'm loving them in Uncharted... Can't wait to replay Resistance Retribution using them...

I also want to give a thumbs up to the gyro-assist fine-tune aiming in Uncharted... Headshots Boom! Boom! It's awesome!

Just figured it out. Content Manager goes wonky if you're connecting through a dock. Seems kind of silly but that's it. Copying my content over save ModNation which doesn't appear. I assume that game isn't available for some reason. :(

Wow, someone around me has all import games, not just demos. Friend request sent!

Another person around me sent me a FR this morning as well.
So i can play US and JP demos on my EU account too, no need for a extra memory stick right? Very useful information, thanks!
That's right.
Just tell the system not to format the memory card when formatting the system.

I bet Modnation's blocked to encourage sales of the Vita version... which is too bad since it would appear that the PSP version is superior (well, at least it has on-line play)...

Pick up Blazblue or UMvC as high rez 2D really pops on this thing. My jaw was on the floor the whole time I was playing Blazblue yesterday.

Or if you absolutely must have a proper 3D game then Wipeout 2048 which is in native rez and is quite the visual spectacle.

All of this is happening through Near, right? That sounds really cool. Hopefully there are actually some people around me who pick up a Vita, I'm not exactly located in a densely populated area.

I am so excited about the potential for 2D games on this system. Rayman Vita is also setting a great precedent for future greatness. Now just give me a gorgeous 2D Castlevania!

I'm still getting the "np-2244-2" error when trying to buy UMvC3, is this a problem for anyone else?

I only have 2 suggestions. Check Settings > System > Error History to see what's wrong. Call Helpdesk.

I'm browsing while lying on the bed now. Never thought i would do that with a PS browser ! There are still a few rough edges but it's very usable.

So impressed with the hardware thus. Just a beautiful device.

The OS is fantastically polished with only a few menu flow issues to complain about (not bad for an early revision). It's more responsive than any Android phone I've used.

Even the web brower, though lacking some important features at this point, is not as bad as I was lead to believe. Most sites I've tried loaded up very quickly and without hitches. You can scroll around and zoom in and out at 60 fps just like an iPhone (and unlike most Android phones). It's far and away the most usable console browser to date (the PS3 and PSP are both terrible as is the 3DS). If they can add some additional features and also allow it to run while playing a game we'll have a genuinely useful feature.

What blows me away is how fast you can move between tasks. There's no hiccuping or loading to deal with. When you want to check out trophies on PS3 you better be ready to wait but everything here just moves. I don't love the look of the bubbles but the OS itself is far and away the best OS I've ever used on any dedicated gaming platform. It's fast, focused on content, and features no ads. The 3DS feels antiquated next to this thing as does the PS3 XMB even.

Agreed, but ime there's a tendancy to give inordinate weight to individual opinions on I'net message boards, and there really is a point of dimishing returns. Objectively, Uncharted GA on a 5" OLED (even at "sub-par" resolution) is going to be a superior image to, say, the original Uncharted at 720p on my 57" big screen, is it not?

Anyway, I and everyone I've spoken to in the last 24 hours think the game looks absolutely fabulous. I've read two or three comments on GAF that say otherwise. People can make up their own minds...

Is Gravity Rush demo available on PSN? Don't tell me it's only in demo units...

It's only in demo units or the JPN store.

I'll disagree on both counts. The forced memory card issue is going to turn a lot of potential buyers away initially. And to have a bunch of your first party games not even use the full resolution of the system is pretty damn bad. Fortunately we got Ubisoft who was able to do what Sony wasn't. I don't think that will impact sales, though. If the Vita fails I wouldn't necessarily blame it on the portable landscape. There's a lot of people that simply don't want, or care about, a console experience on a 300 dollar handheld. It may also just come down to the fact that Sony still possesses not one single "must-have" series of games (in the West) that competes with Mario, Pokemon etc. I hope I'm wrong, because I don't want my purchase of the Vita to end up being a waste. I love most everything about the tech, especially compared to my 3DS.

I think the game looks very impressive for the most part but I can understand where some people are coming from when they make complaints about the IQ. I think it's just that when you're looking at this gorgeous OLED screen that's only 5" you kind of hope that you won't have to deal with jaggies. Obviously that kind of thing bothers everyone differently but I'd imagine it isn't an issue for most in the case of Golden Abyss. Personally I'm not really bothered by it although I would love to see the same game without the jaggies.

Yes.

Uncharted looks fantastic on the Vita when played on the actual system. You can certainly see that it is lower resolution, but it looks cleaner on this screen than 720p does on a 1080p screen. The scaling artifacts are quite minor and do not spoil the image.

Games that DO run at native res are absolutely incredible, though. I've never experienced this level of detail in a handheld. Seeing MVC3 at 60 fps on this thing at native res is truly jaw dropping even after playing plenty of games at 960x640 on iPhone. It's the detail and fluidity that makes the difference.

I've got to say, and I'm sure this has been said before, but Rayman looks unbelievably crisp and beautiful. I literally stared in awe at it. My wife was equally blown away and she is far from a videophile.

I've got a very expensive Samsung plasma and I've never seen a game look so crisp and clean. Download the demo. Amazing showcase for the screen!

And the game went from not interested to bought just like that.

Couple of things to bear in mind:

Most of the games will have been put together on target hardware, rather than actual hardware in their initial development so devs may have been hindered somewhat.

I don't blame Sony for using proprietry stuff.... They'll have been jealously watching MS rip peoples eyes out with their proprietry stuff whilst avoiding piracy for years and they'll be thinking "Why didn't we just do that?"

Lots of RAM.
I think this is one of the main reasons :)
OS looks super fluid.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
I tried the demo out at Gamestop yesterday. I was pretty impressed. The ergonomics are pretty comfortable (if you ignore the back "touchscreen," which I did) and the screen is pretty clear and comfortable. Going from the PSP1-1000 to the PSP2 is HUGE. It's a lightspeed jump difference in improvement.

Buuuuuut:

-The twin sticks are a little too "loose" for my taste. Playing Wipeout's demo I was sawing at the wheel (to speak) because it didn't have the PSP1's tightness/resistance in movement. A minor issue, but I wish the hardware had the ability to make the sticks more and less resistant in the software menu through some hardware based internal tightening/lessening.

Uncharted demo was impressive minus the fire being pixel-y. But I didn't get a chance to see the shooting mechanics because the demo restarted after doing a platforming bit at the beginning of chapter "4" which was the start of the demo. WTF. Way to miss a golden opportunity to show the second stick being an improvement for the PSP2, Sony. :|

Also I completely dislike being forced to use the touchscreen. I thought Uncharted allowed you to turn that completely off and play it like the PS3 versions? I did not see an option for that. Along with being forced to use the shitty bubbles/touch in the main menu which is a Wii-level "can't use the Gamecube controller" failure. I hope that's just a demo "wow-ee!" thing because that's annoying.

Also no subtitle feature for Uncharted's cutscenes (despite turning it on) is annoying, but nothing that is killer probably a demo issue.

I'd get one after seeing the improvements, but $250 is waaaaaay too rich for my blood when you have to factor in the memory card and other stuff. Maybe if Sony bundles it with a movie (like Lords of Dogtown) and a game (like ATV Blazin' Trails), and a 1gig (more like 4+ gig) memorystick like they did the PSP-1000 in 2006, I'd consider it. But not until then.

Instead of using the 'Devices' tab, go into the 'account' tab and enter the 'media and devices' link. You can deactivate your PS3 systems (amongst other devices) from here. :).

On-Topic: Can't wait til my Vita arrives (UK). So envious right now.
Decided to go for the 3G bundle with an 8GB crad and Virtua Tennis from play.com - fancy the £5 off PSN card in the pre order pack. Also looking to get the starter pack, more so for the sleeve than anything else, although I will use the extras.

A Hero Appears! Although it seems you can only do a full wipe.
But none the less, Now I have my 2 slots back!

If that's the case no handheld on the market beats thr Vita. For a launch some if these games look great, Uncharted to me looks awesome, perhaps my eyes are broken.
Your eyes are not broken. These games are absolutely incredible to behold on this thing.

The screen itself is responsible for that. MVC3 on a console is typically going to be displayed on a 1080p screen (or even 1366x768 screen) so you won't be seeing that perfect 1:1 pixel image. The Vita delivers that alongside a near perfect refresh rate (faster than a plasma but still not quite as fast as a CRT) and incredible contrast (infinitely better than every LCD). Really outstanding to behold.

Well, I caved and bought Super Stardust Delta knowing I could get it for "free" from the AT&T deal. I'm glad I did though. Such a fun arcade style experience and it looks amazing.

I signed up for the $15 AT&T plan. Do I have to do anything specific to get my code? I didn't see a voucher or anything to enter in the box.

No shit. You really think that's the audience that this device is catered towards?

Uncharted, Wipeout, Rayman Origins, FIFA, Hot Shots etc etc dual analog sticks, no video-out...yeah, I believe Sony is selling the Vita (at least initially) as a console-on-the-go. In fact I'm positive that's what Sony wants people to believe it is, since that's what their advertising is saying it is.

You have to wait until the free month is up to get the code. Not worth the wait imo.

Also, has Sony said when they are fixing the install issues with some psn games? Super Stardust Delta will not install for me and many other people.
