Metal Gear Solid 3D demo on eShop this week

So played through the demo, it's pretty short... I was expecting the cutscene to trigger when you finally make it to Sokolov. MGS3 is my favorite from the series and I haven't played it since PS2 so I'll probably be picking this up. I wish they left the original camera angle, I would prefer it to the camera control with ABXY.

A couple questions:
I've only played the original PS2 version of MGS3, is this a port of that? Or one of the re-releases? In short, what extra content will this have over the original?

How do I delete the demo off my 3DS?

Go to settings(the wrench icon thingy), then data management, then 3DS software and tap on a game you have and it will give an option to delete.

Christ. That's annoying. Is the game full of jaggies because he has bad contact lenses?
Actually, it's probably better design to turn off 3D for aiming. Yahtzee pointed out in his Resident Evil Revelations review how the sniper scope was screwed up due to the 3D, and for careful aiming you DON'T want to use both eyes anyway.

When aiming with every gun except the M37, the 3D is automatically turned off.
Which is both smart and stupid, imo.

I could almost swear I saw gyro aiming in one of the most recent trailers.
That gives me plenty of hope.

After gyro aiming, dual analog seems pretty over-necessitated. Not that it isn't important for most people, but I find gyro aiming just way quicker.

That said, I also hope they give you the option to turn off 3D-auto disable when aiming, but in this case I do appreciate it when it kicks in. I just don't find disabling 3D in the bridge scene all that useful considering I keep the unit steady.

Admittedly an option would probably be a good idea. I'd have it turn off myself, I found myself closing an eye at times for Zelda so I have no use for it,b ut I guess some may actually prefer it.

One thing I didn't like about the demo is that the controls seemed to... lag. Like a let go holding right on the right slide pad and it still shifting to the right for half a second. It's weird.

I didn't notice the gyro thing. The icon appeared on the screen and nothing happened. Do you only go off balance if you move the system?

I think the gameplay mechanics try to make you move in the direction of the swaying bridge. Game wise, it felt like I was playing against the windiest rope bridge ever, since Snake would slide off and grab on to the edge for dear life. And I don't think I hold my system in an unconventional way. Just seemed weird and silly, the amount of focus it took to cross something simple like a bridge :-/

I was totally unimpressed by the demo.

The controls don't fit as well with this game than PW and the 3DS seriously struggles to run the game.

Thanks but no thanks, Konami.

After playing RE:Revelations...... well, I got a few seconds in and deleted it >.>; Awful, when I strafed, he was perfectly still, no animation...

Feh.

At least Capcom has more than one well to drink from, poor konami.

What a short demo. What's even the point of putting a play limit on it. I had some low expectations for it, but it's not bad at all. I didn't mind the controls, either.
The gyroscopic balance controls are stupid though.

So I'll be picking it up, but not any time soon.

The absolute WORST design decision was pulling yourself up with the D-Pad instead of using the Analog.

What a fucking mess.

This was a short demo? It took me 1:02 to beat it, lol. I guess I was just playing bad...really bad. >.>

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
It's not great, really. It's playable but it's not a smooth experience and the control layout is terrible. I was impressed with the use of 3D though, switching to 2D during gyro mode was handled really well and the environments had great depth.

How big is this demo download? I have limited download with my ISP and am wondering if it's worth my bandwidth or not....

Well it takes up just a little over 1000 'blocks' on the memory card. In terms of MB, I do not know.

Well I played it, it's ok I guess. I can see how it would be so much better with the CPP. Maybe I will pick one of those up at some point and give it another go.

i expected a mess and found a decent port here. Sure, the games shows its age, but still holds well. Graphically i found it correct, 3D is nice, a bit rough and low poly (i cannot remember if ps2 was better or worse , but cocodriles looked really bad )
I tried it with CCP and i really can't see anyone enjoying this without it, it must be a mess.

If it happens that you didn't play it on ps2 and do not own a ps360 or a vita it is a good chance to do it now. But if you own other systems i think this would be the last option i'd choose, especially of you do not own a CCP

If the final game runs at 30 fps, then I will definitely pick this up. At half price. I can't justify paying $40 for a game I already own in the (also $40) HD collection.[/spoiler]
I don't know how the hell you measure framerate, but I'd say the demo runs between 25 and 30 fps, not 15. The cutscenes are around 20, yes, but they're watchable.

Really can't justify this when I just got it in HD for the 360.

And the demo performance is terrible. Though I have to say, with the slider halfway, the 3D was lovely at least. But that framerate... :(

Someone really needs to hold KojiPro and Konami's feet to the fire about this version.

How did it go from that E3 demo to, well, this E3 demo? Was it just the system was less powerful than they thought? No time or budget? They just didn't care because the 3DS wasn't selling well enough? Kojima lost interest in the project and gave it to some of the less talented or enthusiastic developers? Someone should answer questions about this game's quality.

I just tried this demo and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, however it still has a lot of flaws. The framerate isn't good, but I was surprised how well they did CQC (with the d-pad options highlighting exactly what you can do once you grab an enemy). Using the d-pad to chance stance is sort of annoying, but I can't see how else they would have done this without having the camera mapped to the face buttons. I'm not buying a CCP anytime soon and I have the HD collection (as well as the original game), so very not likely a sale for me. Also, balancing on the bridge: why?

The 3D is decent however, and I would love to have a portable version of this game at all times but I'm not convinced that this is the optimal way to do it with the Vita HD collection out soon. Why would Konami cannibalize their own sales?

It's Konami. That pretty much tells everything.

Personally I think this will be the only MGS title on 3DS. I think Konami kind of hurt themselves with the salespotential by releasing the HD collection and the eventual Vita collection.

My 2 cents:

I'm sure GAF already knows this, but this game is amazing, fun, memorable etc even if it doesn't seem like that thanks to cheap versions by Milknami.

So... just play the original version on Ps2, or Subsistance on Ps2.
So good.

If you want a new 3DS game you have plenty of better choices, imo.

This demo is pretty awful. I'm kinda regretting pre-ordering the game, I had some random credits laying around and I had to use it. I wonder if I can change it, this is really not my type of game.

It's kind of funny that one week we get a console quality RE, then two weeks of bad PS2 ports.
What's the other Ps2 port?

I remember Tales of the Abyss but that was out in December already, i think.
At least it was its first time in Europe and the only way Europeans can play it.

But MGS 3... after a generation of saying "damn it PSP, i don't want Ps2 ports and home console games on my handheld" i will not change my mind.
I already had doubts about RE:velations! but i'm quite glad i bought it.

Abyss, yeah. Just came out this week here.

And it's not bad, just...pretty lazy.

Glad to hear it's not bad, because i already bought it!
I still have to start it, and it's already rare in Europe after 2 months only.

So Europe is getting One Piece + MGS 3
USA are getting ToA + MGS 3

Portingsssssssssssssssss

eShop is the way with Samurai + Rolling Western :D and i'm still playing RE of course.

Though the version of One Piece you guys got is beyond fucked up.

Maybe better than nothing, but a total slap in the face, regardless.

I think OP is the worst too, since it's half the game missing we are talking about.
Not a case that we are talking about Bamco-Scamdai. (well, they are also the ones behind ToA...)

I'll just pretend it doesn't exist and wait for new 3DS games like Mega Man Lege... er, i mean like Rhythm Thief by Sega and other stuff that looks interesting.

Compared to OP at least the final version of MGS 3D is probably a little better than the demo, but i'd still recommend to play the original version.

I did enjoy Abyss though. But that's just part excitement about playing a PAL version of a Tales game.
Woo Vesperia.
After 938 years of wait.

And Symphonia was the same thing.
So, i agree.
