3g or Wifi model? Pros/cons to each different version?

With the 3G version you can use your vita's net features out and about. It isn't a contract based service, you just gotta make sure you don't have the auto pay for next month option selected. If you're preordering, you get a free pass that you can only activate after paying for a month but you also get a free game, super star dust delta and a 8gb memory card. It's all for 299.99, 50 bucks more.

If you want a discount then go for the wifi version if you're used to only connecting online in the methods that the psp and the 3ds portables have done so before.

Personally i'd go for the 3G model. You never know when you're on a trip or the net goes out or something right? I have a trip to my gramps coming up and his network really sucks. so i'll definitely make use of the 3G feature.

3G
Pros: extra features and mobility, more beneficial pre-order bonuses
Cons: more expensive for features you probably may not use.

Wifi
Pros: cheaper, use that extra 50 towards a game.
Cons: no mobility features, stuck on relying on a hotspot or wifi connection.

Ok have had my vita for a day and im loving this device. I found someone on gaf using near. Didnt know I lived by any gaffers! Such an awesome little feature. The only thing that bothers me is the friends list and chat list needs to re connect, but im guessing thats to save battery.

One question does the near stuff work while in standby and also do I need near opened while in standby?

Hmm.... I don't think so. I seldom leave Near opened, but it continues to deliver me updates anyway. You may need to check your Near settings though. I remember there is an auto-update setting.

Still dont understand how to use any GPS features on my 3g model. Theres no options for it, and when I go to google maps nothing comes up. Do I need the 3G on?

Seriously. Even if you're not a fan, Uncharted is Sony's biggest new franchise this generation. Pulling out the stops to have Uncharted at launch, AND by a talented studio like Bend is a major play. Based on the 1up feature, Golden Abyss was born during Uncharted 2's production.

If you're looking for something high-production and original (and Japanese fwiw), there's Gravity Daze in a couple months.

I am a fan. Especially Among Thieves.

But Golden Abyss isn't a killer app. At all. It makes no sense to buy the console just to play the game, the same way it did with XBOX and Halo. Golden Abyss isn't even a main entry in the UC series! It's like Resistance or Luigi's Mansion... they were both good games and "the game to get" if you bought the PS3/GC at launch, but neither was a force that justified the purchase. And Golden Abyss falls in the same category.

What I mean is that it's missing a killer app, something that really stands out, you know?

After seeing the trailer that plays after you complete the Gravity Rush demo, I'd say I found my killer app for this launch. Though I wish it was more in line with the launch, than the arbitrary launch window. Seriously though, that game went from a mild curiosity, to the game I'm looking forward to the most Q1.

Disgaea 2 has the most content you'll see and even content you won't see because there is so much. I am a fan of Persona 3 and I hear P2 is great as well but man I just can't pay that much for them. I'd pick up Disgaea 2 and wait for a sale on the persona games.

Afternoon of Darkness, still the best in the series.

As for Persona... I'd go with 3.

Thanks guys, just checked SEN and I'll definitely wait on Persona since both games are nearly £50 :/

Both the Disgaea games are pretty cheap but I'll probably only get round to one. Since both are great is either one particularly good as a starter?

Well, looks like this is the end of me pre-ordering anything from Amazon again.

I got a reply back from the customer service rep, and they won't retro-actively honor the deal.

I now see no reason to pre-order anything in advance, if they are just going to offer better incentives and deals to those that wait. I placed my order 5 days ago. If I had known about the B2G1 deal, I'd have waited on placing my order. My order hasn't even been processed or shipped from Amazon yet, so that makes me even more annoyed. I don't see why it'd be so hard for them to add the deal to my existing order and be done with it.

So, yeah, no more pre-ordering for me. I'll just wait until I'm absolutely certain I won't get screwed out of any deals. I didn't think I'd be as angry at something like this, but I am. Deep breaths...

Pre-ordering things with no incentives is usually a bad idea anyways, when was the time you couldn't find a game at a launch? I think for me that was back in the N64 days. Had a hell of a time finding OoT. But since I haven't preordered anything or missed a games launch.

Amazon shoppers why not just reorder your games using the B2G1 deal, print out a return for the original order and just send back the new unopened copies? Send them back parcel post cost you about $3 for the return and you get to keep the free game.

So the montly rate for the 3g model is what? And is that unlimited data/use etc? I dont mind a small fee for having the ability to be connected wherever I go, but I dont want hidden charges or having to over my data limit etc.

Thanks for all the replies as I am an jumping into this late and the "new system" bug has bitten and am ready to jump in, just need clarification on stuff like above.

Dry spell? There's something like 30+ games covering every genre. There MUST be something that appeals to you at launch?

Except the most important genre on the PSP - JRPGs.
Besides remakes and really noncommittal "announcements" that may or may not lead to anything.

Ragnarok Odyssey is... kind of an action RPG I guess. But no sign of it releasing outside of Japan.

There is no new JRPG anywhere near releasing on the Vita that I can think of.

I'm sorry, but the flagship title of the Playstation brand being there at launch is as "killer app" as it's gonna get. Expecting anything else is unrealistic. Very few titles out there make people buy a console and that should not be what dictates what a "killer app" is.

I loved both Disgaea games and Laharl is my favorite character in the series, but I found Disgaea 2 to be more enjoyable. And with the additions of Magichange from Disgaea 3 in 2 it adds a whole new mechanic that isn't there in Disgaea 1. There is more content in Disgaea 2 as well. But thats just me.

Joining the party now. I'll be getting Uncharted, Wipeout and Rayman. This should be enough until MK arrives and steals all my Vita time.

Man, owning all the current/past gen platforms feels so good.

But so bad for my wallet!

Indeed. It's the only game I'm salivating over.

But since it doesn't even have a fixed release date yet... I'm not gonna jump the gun because of it.

The data rates are horrible 15 dollars for 250meg lol and 30 dollars for 3gig lol. The reason to get the 3G model is the GPS and extra resale value if want to trade it in for the inevitable second gen model. Atleast they are giving a 8gig card with the 3g model for first few weeks.

Sweet, my gamestop will be having a midnight launch, despite myself and the owner being the only people who have bought one and he got his last week. Gonna be a sad and lonely place

Pre-order the PlayStation Vita 3G/Wi-Fi Launch Bundle to receive over $55 in bonus content. It comes with an 8GB Memory Card, DataConnect Session Pass, and PlayStation Network Game. All existing PlayStation Vita 3G/Wi-Fi pre-orders will be upgraded to the PlayStation Vita 3G/Wi-Fi Launch Bundle.

Don't think you needed to cancel and re-order from Amazon to get these.

Wait..what? So if I plan to download a bunch of Vita games, via 3g I will blow that limit out of the water. WTF..this cant be right is it? How much data is being used just playing on-line with others in 3g mode?

You live in nowhere, Indiana. You are lucky Sony is even sending Vita's to your state.

I know there is a disgaea 3 port coming in April. Would love to see JRPGs thrive on the Vita, that would make this the perfect handheld. Maybe between now and the end of the year maybe Namco will bring Ni No Kuni to the Vita. ONE CAN DREAM!

You can't download games or play online multiplayer with 3G anyways.

Cancelled my 3G Amazon order and went with the WiFi. The free 4GB card put me over the edge. Thanks for the head up.

anyone know?

My 4GB card will ship tonight with 2 day shipping and the WiFi Vita will ship tomorrow with release day shipping.

No shit, that's why I am shocked they are having a midnight launch. They probably weren't but when I called to ask he basically just said "yeah, I'll be here e, just come get it"

(you were right the first time...get on some fucking dotaaaaaaaaaaaa)

I'm pretty sure you can't download large files over 3G anyways, I think its a 20MB limit. And why would you? It would take ages.

We get it, you don't have to convince anyone to feel tje same way you do. For many of us the line up is enough, for others the hardware is enough, who cares.

Thank you, I just checked Amazon's listings and Disgaea 3 is due out in April so I think I will go with Disgaea 2 for the reasons stated here and since it will probably mean a smoother transition to 3.

I suppose this is true but the PSP has such a substantial JRPG library that it balances it out. I'm not saying that I wouldn't prefer a new JRPG at launch but for for me at least it hasn't bothered me since I will be going back to the likes of Monster Hunter which will become infinitely more playable.

On a slightly different note I really hope the Vita becomes an RPG machine like the PSP. There are so many great PSP RPGS and I for one prefer to play them on a handheld.

There is no true real time on-line gaming. It is the take turn variety like hot shots golf. Get the 3G for the GPS and the better value with the current bundle with the 8gig card. I am on the fence and will decide in the morning wanna sleep on it.

getting ready to pick up some psp games.

Wondering if anyone has tried Metal Slug Anthology? If the Sam Sho Anthology works, I dont see why the the other one shouldnt. But its a 20$ gamble.

Looking at:

Sam Sho Anthology (1-6)
Castlevania: Dracula X
and maybe one of the capcom classics

This^ also. There are a lot of JRPGs I missed on the Vita and once the PSOne classics get up and running it is game on. Don't be fooled though I really want new JRPGs on the Vita as well. But PSP and PSOne catalog eases the early lack of JRPGs.

My memory isn't the best, but I think the PSP had a slow start for RPGs too. So I hope that the Vita can live up to the PSP in time.

The PSP library must be great for JRPG fans who weren't PSP people. Unfortunately, I was a PSP person and have literally played anything that even remotely interests me on that thing. So I have nothing to go back to.

I hope that the Vita being easier to develop for will push Japanese devs towards it. Honestly, I would rather be playing games on this than on a TV-based console. FFXIII-3 Vita go!

PSP didn't start out as a RPG powerhouse
Vita doesn't need one at launch
but what's concerning is that there are no big rpgs announced for it
maybe ffxhd counts
but that's not even exclusive
psp got crisis core announcement by this point

i hoped for the same thing

3G has a 20mb file limit when downloading and you can't play much games over it due to latency (and more like that shit would eat up your plan)

You do not play online via 3G. You do not download games via 3G

Ok..Well then why would you buy a 3g version if you cant play with others on-line when you are awy from wi-fi hot spot? $50.00 just for GPS? It seems almost pointless to have the 3g version then unless I am missing something completely.

I believe it's 14.99 (14.95?) for 250 MB and 30 bucks for 3GB. Remember these are not contract based fees but if you're not paying attention you will automatically get charged for the following month unless you uncheck that option.

You can still use the net features that aren't all about the online play and downloading via SEN. Browse the net, netflix, music unlimited. There's a feature called near where you can find players near you. I'm not entirely sure about not being able to play online... some of the commercials seem to tout that you can, this MAY be on a game to game basis (some games you can others you can't). But i know you can't download games off the SEN with the net service.

Well, it improves near positioning. Plus you can access the web browser/chat with friends via messaging and such, and also update leaderboards and async-multiplayer. But that's about it for now.
