PS Vita western launch thread, p. 2 | Simply the most desirable handheld yet released

It can't be THAT bad, can it?

It's definitely not that bad. Especially compared to the PSP iterations. But when you compare it to Wipeout 2048 or VT4, yeah, it's doesn't look as good. The game isn't running at Vita's native resolution, that's just a symptom of a launch title.

Overwhelmingly positive impressions from all sides, it seems.

So damn tempting!

I know there are still a ton of question marks over the current marketplace and the Vita's future viability etc, but seriously, as a piece of hardware the Vita is absolutely A fucking star. I think it's the best designed PlayStation product Sony have ever made (and I've never thought any of their consoles have ever been ugly) and as a games machine it ticks every box from a design point of view. I really think they've nailed it from a hardware perspective.

It makes one hell of a first impression as well with it's sleek look and that screen.

It an awesome playing game and alot of variety and alot of gameplay...it just looks like shit compared to the otehr games available on the Vita. It is just jarring going from other games or hell even how clean and crisp the UI is in the main menu of the system and then going into the grainy look of this game.

I loved all teh Hot Shots games, so I have no issues on good the game plays and what it offers gameplay wise and a fun fucking game, it is just a shitty looking Great playing game. Especially when you play it and then play other Vita Games.

i really dont think it looks that bad, its not the worse looking one but yes, its not the best. Sometimes i like watching the intro video to each hole because i like the view.

Maybe im just so use to the psp ones that this is such a huge step forward for me and im really, really enjoying it.

Yes, the $25 off was an excellent deal. I'm going to run with the free 4 gig card from Target for the time being. But I really hope to hear something from Lockerz soon. Their people and even CEO are pretty active on Twitter, so I might drop them a line when I get home tonight. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything.

Oh, do share their accounts please. I'm not in desperate mode yet, but I'll start spamming like a Nigerian prince come Friday.

Without a doubt Sony did a hell of a job on this peice of hardware.

I love HSG. It's super fun and I can't wait til there are more users online to play with. I'm addicted.

The visuals are indeed "meh" compared to the other launch titles like Wipeout or Rayman for example. But really, a golf game is not one I am looking for photo realistic visuals on anyways.

I unlocked a new course yesterday (the "Harvest something-or-other" where there's wind turbines and stuff) and I actually did say to myself "this kinda looks like a PSP game" lol. But there are also moments where it looks better. When the camrea zooms in on the ball while on the green, the grass detail looks pretty cool I guess. DAT GRASS.

I agree 15 is a bit much for PvsZ. $9.99 is a fair price point for the game. There should be another discount applied if you own PvsZ on PS3.

Oh my god, I really can't wait for this thing to get here in 8-10 hours!! :D

First console I buy at launch since the PS2. Obviously this will be the PS2 part II ;)

So I got a reply from PlanetAxel and they say I don't have an order for the 32GB memory card, and so an error has occurred. That's just bad. I'll see if Lockerz.com send anything tomorrow.

As for design, I like the PS2 (fat), PS3 (fat) and PSP-1000 more but each to his own.

Hey guys...couldn't find anything on a search about this. Is it easy to switch back and forth between memory cards? The reason I ask is because I've filled my 4GB pretty quick with 3 games and I'd like to be able to switch back to it easily when I want to play those games.

I tried a demo of the Vita today because I thought they were actually selling it today cuz new release Tuesdays... but nope.

The thing wasn't as impressive as I was thinking it would be, especially that screen... I dunno, I can't see me spending nearly 300 bones for one right now... will wait for inevitable price drop and revision :p

That was my feeling when I played it...felt like I was taking a step backwards. I guess my main issue is that I tried all those other games first and was just blown away on how clean everything looked. Yeah, some games could use some AA, but for the most part they all looked just very clean and very hi-res, especially because of how nice that screen is. But when Hot Shots loaded I was just shocked at the comparison of playing 4 clean looking games, then this one.

The more I think about it the more I might still get it because I love the series and the on-line stuff really appeals to me. I just wish it looked as good as some of the other games and that it did not make you feel you were playing a PSP game on a bigger screen.

I couldn't give a shit how low res a game is if it's fun.

Never played a Everybody's Golf game before but looking forward to this one.

Its not a looker thats for sure. I was very disappointed when I tried it too so you arent alone. Saying that I bought it 10 minutes ago because HSG= pure awesome and not because of the graphics. I agree though that they are incredibly disappointing. I have WipEout to impress the friends :)

If you look at the clothing and shading, it looks close if not as good as the PS3. I come from 1080p 60fps PC gaming and think it looks good. Not good when next to Wipeout or Virtua Tennis but still really good for a handheld title.

Does anyone know if Top Darts has online?

PvZ is only £8.99 in the UK, that's better than I was expecting.

Is it a "buy once get both" game? I didn't think it was but one of the bullet points says "PSVita feature" (wouldn't they all be Vita features?), and there's a paragraph underneath about being able to activate it on two home consoles and two portables. Unless that's just standard for all games now and they don't remove the "home consoles" part to reflect it's a portable game.

Got some hands on time with the system, and I just haven't gotten around to posting impressions till now. I'll give my biggest plus, my biggest draw back, and then a short positive /negative list.

Lets start with the plus, and that's the graphics. The screen looks good, but it's not so OMFG good like I thought it might be. I have a Samsung Focus that has an Oled screen though so maybe that took some of the wow factor out. It was more just in general the graphics themselves and more importantly how CLEAN stuff looked. Vita hardware just seems to clear that hurdle that the PSP and the 3ds have in terms of trying to get great IQ with minimal jaggies.

I tried out Uncharted, Wipeout, and the Gravity Rush demo, and they all just looked phenomenal. Gravity Rush especially stood out graphically. Uncharted looked great too, but it wasn't like I had this OMFG look at the graphics moment. It was more of a look at how clean everything looks on this screen and how nice the texture work is even if a game like Uncharted isn't native res.

Biggest negative for me was when I 1st held the system and went "HOLY CRAPPY THOSE STICKS ARE TINY AS FUCK!" Yeah I mean it's not that dual sticks aren't nice, and that they aren't functional. It's just trying to get a good finger placement to where I felt like I wouldn't fall off or something just never felt right. What really got me too is if the sticks are going to be raised either way back the tops a little bigger. It's not as if they made them small to retract in. I have smallerish to mid sized hands too. I've never bought a 3rd party accessory for and type of holding thing either, but for the 1st time ever in my mind I thought I wonder if there is some 3rd party solution. Like some bigger pads that click on over the sticks.

Positives

Picture IQ
General graphical effects like shadows and such
Framerate seemed solid in everything I played
Large screen to view
Dual sticks for 3d games
Decent System Audio (didn't get to try headphones)
I liked the clear looking triggers both in look and feel
System Weight: Just felt really light

Negatives

Sticks were OMG small
Buttons too were small
I couldn't figure out a good grip with the design and the back touch
Load times
Gimmicky touch screen stuff analogous to the DS omg we have a touchscreen/stylus at it's launch
Menus were weird as it was like some let you use buttons and others were like must use touch screen so I wasn't sure when one or the other was applicable.

Yeah seriously a bit confused here. The res is definitely unfortunate and maybe what everyone is keying on, which is fair. But outside of that it looks really close to the PS3 one and absolute miles ahead of the PSP versions.

And yeah it has the best gameplay and is the most replayable of the launch titles, with Lumines coming in a close second. Especially with all the awesome online play.

Yeah I can see your point of view there. I originally wasn't going to get HSG (and the Vita version is my first ever HSG by the way), but I changed my mind when I saw so many other GAF members getting it.

When I was originally against getting it, I admit the screenshots of it were part of the reason for me deciding against buying it. I was disappointed.

Fast forward to now, I am 100% glad I changed my mind, and love the game. The visuals don't take away from my enjoyment at all, and the gameplay is great, so that's what matters most.

If you're on the fence I would just say go for it. If you're already a fan of the series and will enjoy the online portion, you'll be happy.

I can't wait to see some reviews for Dynasty Warriors. I haven't played one in probably 10 years and if it gets some favorable reviews I think I'd pick it up.

Potentially the best launch of any game hardware ever? Solid machine, great launch lineup, working online and store, social apps.

Wipeout doesn't really impress, I've found. Visually, it's outstanding, but the loading times don't exactly do much to sell the system and the game itself is not really friendly to newcomers.

Pretty much if you like challenging sports games, you should get Hot Shots. I don't even like golf and I adore the series and this is a great iteration. Just don't go in expecting a babygame, which is I think what comes to mind for most people with golf games nowadays.

I'm a huge graphics snob, and yeah Hot Shots is fine. The shimmering in the background and overall softness of the image detracts from the look of the game, but the game is fantastic nonetheless. It's not a game that needs to survive on the merit of its graphics.

The tracks seemed deigned a little more for newcomers at times but I think you're right but not for the most part.

Top Darts, does it have online? Anyone? My purchase hinges on it. Would be a great relaxing game with friends.

I really enjoy HSG, but I don't see how anyone can say it doesn't look bad when compared to the other good Vita titles. It looks terrible.
No one is saying it's a bad game. Or saying it plays bad. It just looks bad up against all these other great looking launch games.

I don't know... opinions I guess. If I was to show off the Vita to friends, I would hide HSG in shame.

But it's still a great game. So if you're interested, don't let the graphics deter you.

The demo had animals that were popping in and the resolution of the grass was awful and overall IQ was not good. The animation and characters were great. I agree LEAGUES ahead of the psp version but it isnt a good looking title from first impressions anyway.
