Hi folks, just to confirm, the sign ups last week are for a chance at the next (end of march) and following beta events for #GuildWars2 ~AT

Yeah, in all honesty, more time making the game awesome is hardly a bad thing. And there will be plenty of time to play when it launches. Enjoy the fresh air and sunshine while you still can.

End of march is a lot later than I thought.

Oh well. At least it isn't this weekend like I was fearing. If it was and I somehow got in skipping it to go to my sisters wedding reception would have killed me.

All of you may continue to wallow in sadness while this beta goes from being inaccessible to me, to lining up perfectly with my birthday. WOO!

Oh wait, now I still have to be invited.

Long wait for the beta but it'll be more than worth it. My guess is they are making the inprovements from the press beta.

So how many people are interested in the beta just so they can play an unfinished game instead of to actually provide feedback, criticism and suggestions?

Its only a month away.

Well, late March could be the last full weekend (24th & 25th), or the last weekend (31st & April 1st) overall. I don't expect it before the 24th though.

Might be funny to have the Beta on April Fool's Day (not really).

Still, plenty of time to get the game optimized for the public, tweak any gameplay issues, add more awesome little features, etc. We've waited since 2007 for this, a few weeks or a couple months aren't a big deal if it means getting a perfect game.

If ArenaNet's going to be receptive to player feedback and isn't just putting on a show, of course. Although, technically, a beta is supposed to be feature-complete.

It'll probably be feature complete but there will most likely still be some balancing issues and judging by the scope of the game, there will definitely be some bugs that might have been missed.

I'd be totally cool with that and would provide a crapload of feedback. It's nice that ANet actually knows what "beta" means.

I know this will inevitably be proven wrong and I am completely talking out my ass, but here's what I'm wildly optimistic the schedule could be;

- Launch Date revealed in mid-march, launch set for Tuesday, May 29th (Yes, 2012)
- Beta Events bi-weekly through April and early May.
- Head Start for pre-orders on the long Memorial Day weekend (May 26 - 28th)
- Official Launch on 29th.

Extremely disappointed by the beta date. There goes all the momentum they built up, as well as my hype.

Nah, that's not how it works. They get you all pooched up, then they back off and tease you a bit. It all builds up to a more satisfying experience in the end. Would you rather they just shove a limp and unprepared game at you early, or pound your brains out with a huge veiny masterpiece that leaves you forever changed and keeps you in your seat for several days?

Uh, from what I saw of the closed press beta the game looked good to me, framerate issues aside. And no, I'm not too pleased that the beta's going to happen right before/during finals.

Tha sounds very likely in my view. I think the version we're getting for that first beta is going to be very, very close to retail. They'll use april for bug fixing and then it'll be out at the end of May or beginning of June.

But it means my wife and I are both off work for 3 days straight and she'd have to use one less vacation day to take the whole week. We're planning to have a little nerd festival like when we were in college.

It's been a while, but I seem to recall all of my finals being over before Memorial Day. Then again, I went to a shite school, so what do I know?

I too was hoping it would be sooner, that's right before my wedding! :/

Get married earlier, honeymoon in Tyria.

Don't get your hopes up, start with Bejeweled like the rest of us.

Haha to be fair she already plays the occasional phone game, I meant her gateway to "proper" games, but even then I think GW2 might be too complex. Dunno, I haven't really planned it out or anything, only thing is with the amount of time this game will take from me I don't want her to feel left out. So I want to get her into it too :p

Actually I checked my schedule, my exams don't start until mid-april, so I guess I'm okay. A lot of assignments due late march though :p
I guess I'm just disappointed because all of this information overload and beta signup had me thinking it would be within a week or two.

I will be taking those days off too as we will celebrate it with you!

With hopefully no big hiccups I could see it shaking up somewhat like this. If June was even likely I would be happy.

GW2 will be her gateway drug to gaming... well maybe not but I have to try!

It's the other way around for my wife and I: she was hardcore into EQ and WoW while I didn't get into MMOs until 5 months or so after WoW launched. I just didn't have a decent enough PC back for the UO / EQ days or I probably would have been hooked on those. This will actually be the first MMO where we start together on equal footing; We got into WoW separately and I was playing LotRO months before I convinced her to try it. She had a better PC for Vanguard, Aion and Rift and I didn't stick with her because they ran like shit. But now we both have PCs that are less than 6 months old and are both hyped up for GW2. In fact, I'm getting irritable text messages from her now about the Beta Weekend being so far away.

Actually I checked my schedule, my exams don't start until mid-april, so I guess I'm okay. A lot of assignments due late march though :p

Yeah, at this point we don't even have a launch date. As far as we know, it could be December, but I sure as hell hope not.

I dunno if we'll take the whole week, but she's definitely mentioned taking some vacation days when it comes out. We just need a solid launch date; I scheduled almost a full month off when Burning Crusade was supposed to come out. I worked 4 10-hour days so it wasn't as drastic as it sounds, but still pretty crazy. It ended up coming out almost a month later.

They know what they're doing. I wouldn't get your hopes up for a May release, amazing as that would be, but letting the summer pass without it being open to the hordes would be shocking.

This is an idle question more than anything, but when people talk about the beta event taking place over a weekend, are we assuming that based on what they've done in the past, or have they ever specifically said that it will be over a weekend?

I ask not because I think it's wrong to assume that it will last only for a weekend (because that seems very, very likely), but because it just seems like a strange practice to go to the trouble of having an NDA so strict that you can't even tell people that you're under NDA and run things like an honest-to-god beta test instead of a "beta" demo, if you're only going to keep things open for two days at a time, and (potentially) extend the invitation to a different group of players for each test event.

Track record. GW1 was like that I hear, and Press Beta was on a weekend. People just have more free time on weekends to try this out.

This is fairly realistic. Would agree to this since it's right after my birthday. lol

I only see this as a very good thing. March will be used to finalise all the last content and balance/fix as many bugs as possible that were found in the the press beta. Arenanet know that most people will use the weekends as a demo for the final product and want the game to be as finished as possible so they are making a last push to get it as close to the retail product as they can.

They will use April and May to stress test the game and fix the reported bugs from the beta weekends and then the game will be released at the very end of May, possibly early June, but not later imo.

I think we can expect a release date in March too and preorder details. That's my two cents anyways. :)

GW1 was a little different. The Beta Weekends leading up to its release were semi-public (all you needed was a pre-order code to play, and there was absolutely no NDA involved), and there was a closed test that ran constantly which was under very tight NDA, but still made some pretty big outreaches into the game's community (guilds that performed well in GvG were invited to the test, each officially-recognized fansite was offered a handful of beta slots, etc). From what I understand there's still obviously a constant, closed beta running, but this time it's ultra-restricted to basically ArenaNet and their personal friends and family.

I find it confusing just because it's really hard to get a read on what exactly they're trying to do. If they want these beta events to be a real beta with feedback and actual testing, then giving people two days to play seems like a pretty inadequate amount of time to give people to form meaningful, informed feedback. But if all they're after is to have enough of a population to give WvW a workout, or to give people a little taste to see what the average person's first impressions of the game are, then it's kind of odd that the NDA would be so strict. It certainly doesn't mean that they can't have that kind of test while keeping a tight lid on things with an NDA (and that's probably what's happening), but it is a really strange way to go about things.

It's true, the next beta being opened to the mass will not only be a stress test but also first impressions will be given. Just like many games, your first impression isn't necessarily on the release but rather beta if you are chosen to test.

I reinstalled Guild Wars 1 to work on the HoM while waiting for GW2.

Christ, that game is overwhelming. Even the "beginner" guides for the HoM is written like you have been playing the game for 5 years. I've read a dozen different guides, studied builds and scoured forums. Then I log on and

Same problem here, somehow I got 8 points and now I have no idea how to proceed. And the lack of an auction house doesn't help...
I know there's something for reaching level 20 in the prologue, I guess I'll work on that for now. Ugh.

Had the same problem when I rejoined after having not played since the release of Prophecies (2005).

Start with something simple like completing every single mission + bonus on both Normal and Hard mode for all 4 games. Skip the crappy sidequests and such.

The Hall of Monuments is generally pretty simple, except that there's a really sharp line between "Stuff that's pretty easy to do that anyone who decides to work towards can accomplish" and "The only way you'll get this in under a year is to take the min-maxiest route possible". Except that 1) It's not entirely clear which is which, and 2) You need to cross that line if you're aiming to get farther than about 20/50.

Step one in getting started is pretty simple: Just beat all of the campaigns (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of the North), and be sure to complete all of the bonus objectives in two of the standalone campaigns.

After that, you just need to decide how many points you want to get from Mini-pets, which is (for the most part) a pretty straightforward matter of just getting money and buying them from people, if you don't have a ton of birthday presents. How many points you want from Pets and Hero Armour (both are very easy to do, and not really even time consuming unless you want to max that monument. You can get some points from crafting prestige armour and weapons, but both are a giant money sink to get even a paltry couple of points.
Unfortunately, that'll only take you up to around 20 or so - after that, you need to be in it for the long haul.

Yeah. I've been trying to get back into it to get my HoM stuff, but it's so slow. Finding good builds for all my heroes is a pain in the ass when you've been away from the game for a couple years. So overwhelming.

I have the all campaigns and the expansion already beat, but it's just getting going with builds I'm having issues with. Both for my ranger and heroes.

I feel the same. Some bonus objectives can be a pain in the butt too. Never bothered with some of them during my first playthrough. It's been years.

One of the HoM guides I saw said to pick a Ranger because you got some HoM points for taming pets. It took me until I hit 20, got halfway through Factions and traveled to EotN before I found out that Rangers suck ass for what I am trying to accomplish and I was told to reroll. In the grand scheme of things it isn't that long, but I put 15 hours into a character I shouldn't play anymore. Kinda brutal when I average about 8 hours of game time per week.

When a ~1 month wait just for a shot at getting into a beta made me groan, I know I'm at the hardest part of the wait for this game lol.
