The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

So it's no different than any other freemium. Cool. All those in-game things only available with premium currency are always obtainable with Tapjoy.

I generally like deliberately original themed freemiums over the ones with a famous or well-known theme. I only played the Smurfs one and the Peanuts one for a couple days before I got sick of them. Hopeful for this one, though, as Beejive isn't handling this one. Although, the horrendous Theme Park freemium also came out of this studio if I'm not mistaken.

Based on what others have said online...

For me, the problem with it is that it forces you to IAP if you want certain items. There's literally no way to get them if you don't because the Donuts are incredibly rare and the items are incredibly expensive.

In Tiny Tower, everything was available to you whether you spent money or you didn't, and the IAPs were a convenience. So in that game you'd IAP because you wanted to, whereas in The Simpsons you IAP because you have to if you want everything.

(Obviously you'd want to as well, it's just that I prefer games that leave the decision up to me rather than forcing it upon me. That's why I spent money on Tiny Tower and why I'll likely be quitting The Simpsons very quickly.)

Anything big coming out this week? This place has been awfully quiet for the past week.

Or it just might be my imagination.

Waking Mars. Up there with Super Crate Box, Beat Sneak Bandit, Triple Town and Ziggurat as one of the best games released this year, on any platform.

The aforementioned Simpsons city building game. I am super excited :)

Yea, but freemium? No thanks. From the sounds of people who have played it already, it seems to almost require IAPs, and I just cannot support that.

Let me pay a flat upfront cost, and then I might consider it.

Oh yea, forgot about Waking Mars. Looks excellent from what I've seen.

The Tobe game is this week, apparently. That's looking nice. And there was something else but I can't for the life of me remember what. I know I had two games in my mind as must-buys.

I'm going to hold out on impressions before getting Waking Mars. It may be fun to play but it's appearance is pretty bland, to me. Definitely getting Tobe, though.

March 7 iPad announcement is official. Now we get to figure out how this affects iPad gaming.

It won't. There are like 5 games that take advantage of the iPad2/iPhone4S capabilities right now. Nobody wants to cut out older devices and limit their potential market.

It won't be until iPad 4 that the iPad Retina resolution becomes common in games.

Finally managed to get my first gift off Free My Apps in Infinity Blade II. Are there any good guides around that explain the mechanics of the game?

I understand the fighting mechanics - it's more the overall strategies I should be thinking about that interest me. Right now I've just started Rebirth 3 and have been upgrading as many equipment pieces as possible. Is that all there is to it?

Holy craaaap! I top out at around 200,000, way to go man!

I agree though, Gridrunner iOS really is one of the best shooters I've ever played. It's so stripped down and simple while also being manic and complex, it's a masterpiece. Everyone that's into the Cave games should check this out too, it's God tier stuff.

And it's simply amazing on the iCade too.

I agree. I'm pretty impressed by GR. it's frantic and a lot of fun to play and I love the retro throwback presentation. GR and Forget Me Not have been two of my favorite games on the app store so far

Finished Ghost Trick. Lovely game.

Some people didn't like the twist and the ending, but I did. I thought it was a very satisfying story.

• Computer Empires in Multiplayer Matches
Not satisfied with conquering just your friends? Now you can up the ante by throwing up to four computer empires into the mix. Now wouldn't it be cool if you could team up with your friends against the computer players...

• New "Allied" and "Survival" Game Modes
Joining the current "Classic" (free-for-all) game mode are two brand new game modes available in single and multiplayer games. "Allied" mode splits all of the empires into two teams mixing human and computer players. "Survival" mode is human vs computer cooperative team play; can you and your allies compete against a team of new and improved computer players? We'll see with...

• Faster and More Devious Computer Opponents
Battle-tested by some of the finest Starbase Orion players around, the AI for SO has received continual improvement in both performance (how quickly it takes its turns) and strategy (how much of a challenge it provides). If you beat the game on Impossible before, then the Starbase Orion AI wants a rematch!

Players can now customize the priority listing for the Industry, Farming, Research, and Military build focuses. Don't want to build Cloning Facilities? Gridrunner is the best game ever made.....FACT!!! New high score of 482,129 on Pure. It's still a long way til #1 though...

I'm still not scoring too highly, but LOVE LOVE LOVE this game. I really hope Minter is making a decent living out of doing this, it's amazing to be playing this game so many years after playing the C64 classic. I'm so happy that he's finally able to create the kind of games he wants and has such a great platform to do it on. If you're a fan of classic shooters, love the namco vibe and just love games in general then give this a go. And if you're an icade user then you can't be without this.

ooh loved that game during launch. Will/did they ever add some 'diplomacy' stuff? And do aliens ever serve a purpose besides raping your fleet early on?

Diplomacy is still on the table, I think next up is named leaders and so forth. I've been playing this religiously since launch. Me and Pylon have played a few multi games but there's always been a lack of GAF people to play with sadly. Do I have you on GC? (Tunesmith)

I'm giving simpsons: tapped out a shot. I absolutely will not buy anything in game. Add me if you like (adding friends actually helps you earn money) gamer tag: ianhoar

Having good fun with Midway arcade. $1 for games like joust, rampage, spy hunter and defender. All still good to play

Nice to see the additional content in packs too. Gauntlet 1 and 2 for an extra dollar is a decent deal.

Controls seem fine to me. As good as you will get from touch anyway.

There is a huge chance that the iPad 3 will have a much larger gaming emphasis than the iPad 1 or iPad 2. A lot of inside chatter suggests this.

Just because of the retina display? At the end of the day, games are really limited due to the lack of physical controls (Fling sticks excepted), I can't see how sharper graphics will give it much more of an edge.

I agree with Zzoram, devs will be missing out on a HUGE chunk of the market if they develop solely for retina displays.

Not much different, I think, at least for the first months. The added power will only benefit to games that require that much power...which takes months to develop anyway. Meanwhile most developers will just make the game to be playable on the lowest common denominator, iPad 1, which isn't quite dead yet.

when they add diplomacy this game will finally be able to compete with MOO series..

great game now, but still feels like it is missing stuff

The 20MB 3G download limit is really holding things back, in our case at least. Being over that has a huge impact on sales.

We were reviewing one of our upcoming games today and discussing iPad 3 (and Retina in general). Proper higher res support isn't really practical with that download limit in place (outside of convoluted high res download packs).

Is that just a one-off cost for all those games, plus the packs for another buck... or are they charging per-play like Namco or whoever the fuck? Because a dollar is a steal!

I'm really glad that exists, though. As soon as Apple get rid of it, developers will stop caring about optimising their games and suddenly everything is Fairway Solitaire and you can fit about four games on your phone even though the games could easily be under 20MB with a bit of effort.

Obviously it has other issues, but until everyone's using 1TB iPhones, any encouragement for devs to keep their app sizes down is good.

$1 one off buys you the app which comes with the following games:

* Defender
* spy hunter
* rampage
* root beer tapper
* arch rivals
* joust
* a arcade basketball type game
* a pool game
* an air hockey game
* a roll ball game

The interface is well done with 3d replications of the cabinets or a nice menu system. There are achievements and 'prizes' you can redeem for tickets.

Then in app you can buy the following packs for $1 each:

Pack 1
* Gauntlet
* Gauntlet 2
* Wizard of wor

Pack 2
* Narc
* Total Carnage
* APB

Touch controls are what they are. That aside, I believe this is a collection done 100% right. The pricing and effort gone into it put to shame the other collections. Note that the $1 price point is apparently an introductory offer, so might be charging through the teeth soon. As it is $3 just to send the message that this is the way to provide old games is worth it.

Agreed.

No thanks to games that are several GB big.

What's everyone's triple town high score? God this game is addicting. But I can't seem to play it for too long, I feel exhausted after each session.

I always seem to end up making the stupidest of moves, so my record is around 230k or something. Haven't played it for a while though. Got kinda boring in the long run, darn ninja bears...
