Still nothing. Argh.

Jesus christ.

It's right there dude, first column labeled Internet Explorer with the e next to it!

(Did you change the default browser? I think metro IE disappeared for me too when I set chrome as default).

I did install Chrome and set it as default. Google's not playing around anymore, damn.

Ok, does anyone know what I have do to after I make that partition? I made the partition but it says it can't install to that because it's a dynamic volume which isn't supported for installation? What does this mean and is there a way to fix it?

And why Windows Defender (AKA the new Microsoft Security Essentials) hidden under the Action Center? I think everyone should know that they have built in protection from viruses etc.
I was about to install MSE until I found that it was already included. That's great to see but I agree that they need to make it known to the user that they have it without needing to dig.

Windu

never heard about the cat, apparently
cut the rope is pretty fun
Another thought: Why is Windows Update not a Metro app? Would have made everyone's lives easier.

And you gotta love how there is still an old ass link for installing updates for other software like Office (this link is soooo Vista lol).
there is a windows update section in the metro settings.

Anyone able to describe how multi monitor works a bit more? I get the jist that desktop shows on the second monitor and metro on the main, but say I click a tile on the main metro desktop that opens a desktop app. Does that mean it always opens on the second monitor? Or does it put it on the main, and the desktop spans both monitors then? My second monitor is a 4:3, I'd want to keep things like photoshop on my main, and keep things like IM clients on the second monitor. Can you move metro apps to the second monitor? Etc etc?

Alright, installed the CP on my workstation.

This will be fun
it won't
.

How do I access the media controls outside of the music app?

Why can't I go "back", using the back button on my mouse? This seems so obvious, it's weird they didn't implement it. Instead I have to click on the back button.

Why does metro go back to the last app, when I click on my desktop on the other screens? It renders live tiles useless.

Whoever thought horizontal scrolling for Messages in the people hub makes sense, needs to be fired.

I want my main taskbar and metro on difference screens. I'm used to have the clock in the lower corner of my big screen, but want metro on my smaller screen on the left.

Charms on multiple screens are a pain in the ass. So is everything else that uses the "hot corners".

Iadien

Guarantee I'm going to screw up this post? Yeah.
Well, after trying it for a bit I will not be switching to Windows 8. I dislike the UI and metro thing. It will take some getting used to for sure.

It makes the hub unusable IMO.

Read on twitter (Charlie Kindel afair) that someone had a problem where none of the apps that used an account worked right. He did a Windows update and the problems went away

I updated and restarted the system and still nothing. I only managed to connect to facebook account in Pictures (the first app I launched), but that's it. Every other application that needs to connect to either Google account, Facebook account or Microsoft account don't work.

And for some reason all apps, and some parts of the Store, are now in German, even though I have default language set to English :/.

Haven't been able to move Metro apps to the second monitor, my Desktop apps that I open through the start menu open in the place where I closed them previously.

As for the Task bar, you can specify the behaviors for programs, whether you want it to just display all the programs, only programs on that monitor, or none at all. The one problem I've experienced with running dual monitors is that in order to trigger the "Search Share Devices Start Settings" Menu you need to put your monitor at the bottom right of the Primary monitor which is a problem for me as my Primary is on the left and Secondary on the right, so it can be problematic as the cursor sometimes drifts towards my secondary.

Yeah, that's my main issue with metro apps as well.

I set up two mail accounts, selected one. Trying to get back was a bitch. Navigating back doesn't work and there doesn't seem to be a single, visible UI element that can be used to either navigate back or display a list of accounts. Going back to the start screen also didn't change things (which I guess makes sense, but still). So far the only solution I found is getting that options bar at the bottom and clicking accounts. Anyone got an alternative?

Also, what is it with the ugly aliasing in metro apps? The account list is an ugly, blurry mess.

But yeah, my biggest problem with metro is that it's damn confusing figuring out where you are and how to navigate around. Also, it feels like I'm flying blind once I'm in a metro app.

To swap accounts you use the bottom bar (or right click on kb/mouse). I get the impression that those bars are how the intend for you to move around an app but its not there yet.

And no, the start screen does not work exactly like the start menu. Search in the new one sucks. It doesn't find nearly as many shortcuts as the old one did (windows update or language controls for example).

Just to point out: you have to select Settings or hit WinKey+W to get to the results in the Settings category, which contains those links.

I now have 29 posts in this thread... goodness.

This beta will be great for MS to collect feedback from laptops/desktop users since there aren't many Windows tablets on the market.

I hope so anyway.

Yeah that's garbage. 3 clicks to select a different account, genius :/

Not only that, it tends to restrict the results right away, but it's still going to tease you with all the results it found in other sections. What's the fucking point.

Search for "system". 0 results in Apps, nothing showing. But hey, there's some results under settings that we're not gonna show you. Because not showing you any results is the way to go.

i'm sure they already know about the issues. They don't really get much feedback from users like they used to. one reason it probably isn't called a beta anymore.

You gotta be fucking kidding me, my download stopped and i only needed 200 mb to go. oh well gonna torrent it instead even if it takes longer.

If they know about the issues then does that mean we will get updates that adds/removes stuff? Or do we have to wait for the retail release?

Once a disk has been converted to dynamic, the only way to change it back is to delete the partition(s) and recreate it as a basic disk.

Cool, but this

Did you look long enough to realize that the Start Screen does literally everything that the Start Menu does, as easily and quickly as the Start Menu does it, plus a lot more?

is simply not true.

Pressing win + specifickey and then typing is not as easily and quickly as just pressing win and typing in whatever I'm looking for.

I wouldn't get your hopes up, but there is an update function built into the Store, so who knows... I think I got updates for 3-4 apps right away, although I'm not sure what they did.

Yeah. Hopefully that gets changed so all the results appear at once.

I've just seen the Windows 8 task manager for the first time and it looks great, I would love that in Windows 7.

WTF, how did it switch though? Was it always like that? It will let me install to may main partition just not the new one I created.

What the hell are/were Microsoft THINKING with Windows 8? This is a complete and utter mess of an operating system.

  • It's a pain in the ass to close applications.. The close button and double left corner click work!
  • 'current' applications on the left panel aren't live so you have no idea what something is doing until you open it.
  • Do a search, sometimes things will appear on the desktop sometimes they'll appear as a Metro app with very little distingushing features outside of an icon.
  • The 'charms' take an age to appear.
  • Settings often feel completely hidden, in random places or just 'wrong'
  • Performance in metro apps is horrible
  • The start screen is just devoid of personality

I love Metro, when done well. I think Windows Phone 7 and Zune look fantastic. But god damn Microsoft, as a desktop operating system Windows 8 is a shit storm.

Unless you make some real changes I'm out until windows 9.

Starting to click more with it now.

I love right-clicking in IE to move between tabs, the screen just feels so much bigger.

Managed to fix FIFA, although I had to completely download it again instead of pointing Origin to my games folder. Game played great as well.

Tried installing the audio drivers in Win 7 compatibility mode but still can't access the Xonar control panel, fairly big problem.

Being able to close tabs by moving to the corner of the screen is pretty nice, I'd miss that if I go back to W7. Task manager is better too.

Having mail integrated is great, saves me keeping a Gmail tab open in my browser.

Photos are a nice touch, just not sure when I'd really use the feature but it's nice when it's used.

Being able to pause file copying is well overdue, a nice feature.

This would suit a tablet MUCH more. In fact I picked up my iPad earlier and it felt so basic and clunky compared to W8.

to close an app all you do is drag down from the top.... not the hardest thing in the world to do.
the left bar is there only to allow for a quick way to see what's open... it does the same thing wp7 does in showing you a picture of the last state of the app.... it would be benificial for them to add some text though since some of the pictures are hard to tell what they are. Also you can click the top right corner to swap between apps as well which will show their "live" view.
I am not seeing any performance issues.... even through the vm.
I agree with you about the personality aspect but I think this is because most apps do not utilize the live tile yet... I bet in the final version it will seem much more alive.

Yes, but I'm on a desktop. It's far easier to move to one side of the screen and click than grab and drag it down to the centre.

I agree, some text would help. But the upside of hovering over the taskbar on Windows 7 is that the applications are 'active' down there. On Windows 8, they're completely static icons... Fine, on a tablet or a phone where resources are a problem. But on a desktop?

I am not seeing any performance issues.... even through the vm.

Pulling data into libraries took seconds through explorer and 20-30 seconds within the metro applications. Which didn't even seem to cache. I know, app preview, but still. Very, very slow.

I agree with you about the personality aspect but I think this is because most apps do not utilize the live tile yet... I bet in the final version it will seem much more alive.

Let's hope so. Even with the live tiles... It still felt completely bland.

you don't need to close metro applications, they go into a suspended state after not being used. But if you do want to close them, you can either drag down from the top while in an app or slide your mouse to the top left and then down to access that menu and right click the app to close. And yeah they are not live because they are not doing anything even though they are still open. I have had no confusion over what is a metro app or desktop in the app selection screen /shrug. If you don't want to wait for the charms bar use win + c. The bar does have problems with multi monitors though, but they are aware of the issue. And yeah the apps are buggy, thats why its a beta.
Why is it that in some apps (USA Today, LA Times etc..) that I cant scroll left and right with my mouse?
beta, shit aint finished

Running for a few hours on my Vaio F12 laptop (i7, Nvidia gt 330m, 6 gb ram, 1080p screen).

I love some of the new features, I really do, but there are some things that completely ruin the experience. Hot corners suck for dual screens, but I do love the hot swap feature for dual screens. Everything seems to be running faster than before, and I'm also loving the Google integration OOB.

How's gaming on this? Could I play some Steam games and be fine, or is this a completely impossible idea until they start making games with Windows 8 in mind?

Installed it on VMWare Fusion without a problem. My mouse back/left buttons are not working, likely a driver issue. So I feel like I'm missing out on some of the more zippier navigation aspects of Windows 8. But still, pretty nice.

Why do I have to use the start screen to pin/unpin applications to my taskbar? It doesn't make any sense to remove this option.

Don't tie app language settings to my account language! The live account I'm using for the beta isn't an US account and even though I downloaded the US beta, it shows the live apps in a different language. Stop doing that, ffs.

Why do I have to use a Microsoft account to sync my settings? Why not just link my local account with the Microsoft account of my choice? Now I can't sync settings and the Live apps like Music, Video and Xbox are gimped, they tell me I have to switch back to a Microsoft account. No way I'm using the same password for my local pc and Microsoft account.

Why is there no way to change the library settings in metro? I have to use the explorer to add the music that is stored on my WHS.

Music app is nice and all, but they really need to work on navigation. I can't, for example, filtr by artists and then choose a single album - the app only shows me ten recently played songs and gives me options to either play it all, shuffle it or add to playing list. There's also no way to remove a single song from the playlist.

You don't have to. You can still just click on the icon on taskbar and pin it there or just RMB on application and select "pin to taskbar".

At least you're lucky enough so it ties it to your account language. My copy just randomly selects German language; I know that German is right besides Poland but that doesn't make the language any more familiar :/.

Thanks! Certainly not what I had in mind. I had hoped it would look more like the list view from the Zune player. Hm..

I really need to get my hands on this, but it'll have to wait. Exam tomorrow!

EDIT: Thanks t-ramp as well!

We're both right. You can do that on the taskbar on your main screen, but not on the taskbar on the other screens.

Which brings me back to the point that my main screen is not my metro screen.
