I rememberd Homer punching Lenny in the back of the head while he's drinking coffee.

That's the dental plan episode right?

Watching Homer the Heretic I can't believe how bible bashing that episode was. Strange because there really wasn't another episode like that, then later they even had the episode were Homer races to save his kids from being baptized.

I watched Kamp Krusty last night. It was one of those episodes where I didn't just laugh, I was constantly smiling for the entire episode.

Somehow I misplaced my season 4 DVD (maybe I lent it to someone) so I hadn't seen the Last Exit to Springfield in forever. I rarely check to see what syndicated episode is playing on the local stations because it's usually one of the more recent episodes but I randomly checked what episode it was going to be a couple of weeks ago and it turned out to be Last Exit to Springfield. I had forgotten how good it was, definitely one of the best.

Dental plan.

Last Exit to Springfield is definitely one of the best, if not THE best. Even though I didn't know who she was at the time, Dr. Joyce Brothers' "I brought my own mic!" always has me pissing myself. Mr. Burns' toilet convo with Homer was also genius.

(just trying to pick out the less-remembered moments from the episode)

(edit: I'm aware of the DP, but the Crying Game quote needs to have it's own post)

Man, I wish VLC or something had a right click gif maker option. So many gifs I want to make.

Also, do you think it's possible to create an episode as personal as the ones in the 2nd seasons today? With the animation and look today, I don't think it's possible even if the script was solid. The last one I remember them doing was that episode with Lisa and the whale, which was a bad episode.

They should just do a stealth remake of an old episode. New animation, same script, don't announce it or anything, just let it air. Would be an interesting experiment.

Eh, they could easily overcome the new drawing style, if they had the writing talent.

Sure, the old visuals of the Simpsons seem more intimate, while the present visuals are rather sterile. But if they had an amazing script, and (lest we forget!!!) the voice acting isn't phoned in, modern day Simpsons could still be really touching and classy.

They just lack decent talent 1) to make a good story, 2) to make a good mix of heart and jokes, and 3) to make the two former work with the characters as we know them.

They did.

As soon as your cartoon characters get kids that look exactly like said character, you kind of jumped the shark.

edit: lol, noticed that Grampa didn't age one bit.

Welp, you clearly didn't watch the episode. Good to see that didn't stop you from criticizing it.

That episode was ok, but kind of threw the other future episodes/references out the window when Brooks stated that was the "last episode."

That reminds me of the 500th episode where Homer says something like "remember when we moved in and I "talked like this?" in his old season one voice.

Homer: [receives a sweepstakes junk mail with a `You may have already won'
check] One million dollars! I'm rich! [rushes to the bank]
Teller: Mr. Simpson, I can assure you, this check of yours is non-negotiable.
Homer: Oh yeah? Well, what makes you so damn sure?
Teller: See where it says, ``VOID VOID VOID'' and ``This is not a check'',
``Cash value one twentieth of a cent'', ``Mr. Banker, do not
honor''...
Homer: Shut up.

I love that void void void line

Announcer: We now return to Troy McClure and Dolores Montenegro
in ``Preacher with a Shovel''.
Man's voice: But irrigation can <save> your people, Chief Smiling Bear!

The most established Simpsons fan forum on the 'Net (NoHomers.net) recently polled its members for their favorite episodes of all-time.

Last Exit to Springfield was voted the best.
Followed by Cape Feare, Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part 1), Homer Badman and Marge vs. the Monorail.

Do you have a link to the poll? I'm surprised that Krusty Gets Kancelled wasn't in the top 5. For celebrity appearances, those ones actually worked quite well. Homer at the Bat was another great celebrity-loaded episode... coincidentally, both by Schwartzwelder.

And You Only Move Twice not rated either. Ohhh maannnn /mikescioscia

Lemon of Troy, The Twisted World of Marge Simpson, Deep Space Homer and Marge vs. the Monorail are my favourites.

Marge: I have a responsibility to raise these children right and, unless you change, I'll have to tell them their father is... well, wicked.
Homer: [to Lisa and Bart] Kids, let me tell you about another so-called wicked guy. He had long hair, and some wild ideas, and he didn't always do what other people thought was right. And that man's name was...
[thinks]
Homer: I forget. But the point is...
[thinks]
Homer: I forget that, too.
[to Marge]
Homer: Marge, you know who I'm talking about! He used to drive that blue car.

Homer: I'm sorry. I can't come in today. Religious holiday. The feast of... Maximum Occupancy.

Anyone figure out why Flanders didn't go to church that day? Was it because he was meant to save Homer from the fire?

I'll post the direct link to the poll results so people don't have to dig for it.
You Only Move Twice finished 12th. Homer at the Bat 14th. Krusty Gets Kancelled 112th.

Repairman: You know the problem here is water leakage, if you just buy a 50 cent washer...

Homer: I have a better idea, GET THE HELL OUT!

Repairman: Look, I've got some washers in my truck, I'll give you one.

Homer: Marge, get my gun.

Abe: "That's my son up there!"
Jasper: "What, the balding fatass?"

Abe: "Uh, no, the Hindu guy."

Bart: Take him away, boys.
Chief Wiggum: Hey, I'm the chief here! Bake him away, toys.
Lou: What'd you say, Chief?
Chief Wiggum: Do what the kid said.

Homer: I can have a great time all by myself.
Lisa: Hey Dad, I think state and federal laws require us to have a babysitter.
Homer: Oh, Lisa. Haven't you seen "Home Alone"? If some burglars come, it'll be a very humorous and entertaining situation.
Bart: You're absolutely right, Dad. We don't need a baby-sitter.
Homer: Wait a minute [takes out card reading: "Always do opposite of what Bart Says."] You kids do need a baby-sitter!
Bart: [to himself] Blast that infernal card! (to Homer) Hey, Dad. Don't give me that card.
Homer: Here ya go--[pulls card away]--No!

An episode from season 19 is on that list. Smh.
To be precise, in the Top 100 there's exactly one Mike Scully episode (Season 12's Trilogy of Error), one Al Jean episode (Season 19's Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind) and one Season 1 episode (Moaning Lisa).

Everything else on the list aired from Seasons 2-9... and only the holdovers from the Season 7 & 8 classic era production runs (pre-Scully) made the cut from Season 9.

I just watched one of my favourite episodes: Lisa's First Word. Funny, clever, poignant, and full of so much charm and personality. It's a testament to the show that it doesn't even feel like a stand-out AAA episode. It just kind of fits into that era of the show because The Simpsons was so damn consistent for almost 10 years straight!

I'm pretty certain that series 4 is the best overall series

Mr. Plow, Marge vs. the Monorail, and Last Exit to Springfield all in the same season? Outrageous.

It's a pornography store! I was buying pornography!

And Whacking Day, and Lisa's First Word, and Homer's Triple Bypass, Streetcar named Marge, and Kamp Krusty!! To be able to show such consistency for so long is just incomprehensible. Modern TV is shit in comparison. A few have come close but there are always going to be classic episodes then a few episodes of filler. There wasn't a single "filler" episode of The Simpsons in that time frame

I watched The Simpsons every Sunday on Sky One from series three onwards. For over 15 years that was my Sunday night and I would look forward to a new episode every Sunday. There will never be another show with that kind of impact

Yeah, all through high school I watched all THREE syndicated episodes every day. Does any other have that heavy a circation? It's crazy when you think about it.

And I bet you never got bored of watching the same episodes so many times? I certainly didn't.

nope, after a long day of school and sports practice I'd grab hummus and chips (or whatever snack was around) and watch my hour of simpsons and seinfeld. Then before bed I'd watch the 10pm simpsons and go to bed. That was the life...

In the UK our Sunday night on Sky One was

5pm - old Futurama
5.30pm - new Futurama
6pm - old Simpsons
6.30pm - new Simpsons
7pm - new Malcolm In The Middle

2 and a half hours of pure comedy gold
