Cyberpunk appreciation thread of neon lights and computer chatter

I love cyberpunk. I love neon lights against the backdrop of clinical environment designs. I love entering rooms full of computer chatter and blinking lights. I love the alien technology. I love everything about it. This thread is about our favorite environments from cyberpunk video games.

Blade Runner (1997)

Ray McCoy's dingy apartment.

On the balcony with a remixed "Blade Runner Blues": epitome of cyberpunk?

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011)

Similar scene from Deus Ex: Jensen's apartment.

I adore this game's use of blues and purples. I think it has some of the best art direction of all time. It's pure cyberpunk. Love all the computer terminals littered throughout the ship, bleeping on and on, drowning out the cries of monsters. The entire game reminds me of a laser tag arena with its dark hues and sterile environments. Just perfect.

Cyberpunk is pretty awesome! One of my favorite experiences was discovering the SNES version of Shadowrun at Blockbuster back in 93 or 94 and renting that for like two weeks. I was so blown away by the world and its content. Been a fan of the genre ever since.

This thread just reminds me of how badly I want a Ghost in the Shell game to happen that's a cross between Rainbow Six and Mirror's Edge.

YES! I'm playing through Deus Ex: HR right now, and I need more cyberpunk in my life. I already have Blade Runner on the PC and both 16 bit Shadowruns, but I need more. This is a genre that is ready for a comeback!

I absolutely LOVE Jensen's apartment in HR. It really touched me in that special place and made me lust for more cyberpunk in games.

I wasn't a big fan of HR overall, but the apartment is a fond memory.

Entering Jensen's apartment in Deus Ex HR, as the music kicks in and the blinds open, that's one of my favorite scenes in a game.

For some reason, that first picture doesn't make me think cyberpunk, just futurustic/sci-fi. I guess it's because of the lack of the normal yellow/golden filter style.

I suppose that cyberpunk is a nebulous term to define, anyway. Speaking of which, I don't know if Diamond Age qualifies as cyberpunk, but it's probably next on my reading list.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Blade Runner by Westwood is a brilliant game. Anyone who plays PC games should check it out at some point.

It's seen a pretty good revitalization of sorts lately: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Syndicate, Hard Reset, E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy, Gemini Rue...

Now I really want to play Snatcher and Deus Ex. I may have to plug in my Japanese Saturn and play Snatcher sometime this week.

By the way, The Missing Link is absolutely fantastic. I thought the environments in it were more "cyberpunk" than most of Human Revolution. Loved the computer terminals everywhere, loved the blues and purples and somber lighting, loved the body scanners relaying your skeletal image... looked so, so good.

Anyone have any screens they'd like to share from The Missing Link?

I'm most of the way through HR now (I think). Is the missing link a wholey separate adventure, or a side mission in the main story?

Side mission in the main story, but it's a good 4-6 hours of gameplay. The problem I had with Human Revolution is that it overstayed its welcome. The gameplay is top-notch, but only for so long due to the game's repetitive nature. The Missing Link is the perfect length for keeping the experience fresh throughout.

The Longest Journey

Newport in Stark is very inspired by Blade Runners LA, but it got a very particular charm.

The first two Metal Gear Solid games both rock the anime/cyberpunk aesthetic. As they both encompass one singular location I'll have to cheat and say "the whole game". But really, in the first one it was less about the location (a fairly utilitarian military base) and more about the surrounding visual shiny - the UI, the radar, the score, the ninja etc.

I guess I should rephrase my question. What I meant to say is, do you access the DLC from within the main quest line, or is it a separate entity, accessed through the main menu?

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Forgetting Neuromancer, the granddaddy to the genre in both books and video games? For shame!

One thing I liked about ME when you go to places like the Citadel with all the neon lights.

Completely agree. Now let's see some of these cyberpunk-heavy Mass Effect environments! Dennis, get on it.

Uplink (by Introversion) is pretty bad ass. It's a hacking game set entirely in a fake GUI. You accept contracts via email, connect to servers by bouncing your signal all around the world, use password crackers to break in, steal data and/or money, and delete logs as you go. Great music too.

Man, this thread makes me want to try Gemini Rue and Beneath a Steal Sky. I think I picked them up from GoG somewhere along the way but haven't started them yet. And the Longest Journey/Dreamfall games are on my list too...

Oh, how could I forget the original System Shock (1994)?

Another game with FANTASTIC art direction. I love the colors! Like its sequel, the environments really remind me of laser tag arenas, which I love. Bleeps and bloops abound!

I'll probably never play Deus Ex HR until the new nvidia cards come out. It runs like total fucking garbage on my 5850. Walk into a tiny bathroom get frame dips into the 30's.
