CBS Interactive (GameSpot parent company) buys Giant Bomb

Licorice-flavoured booze?
Still not feeling this sadly, It doesn't matter how much better their content gets they just don't feel like that rouge underdog any more with CBS behind them, I find it hard to believe that they couldn't sustain their site from subscription and advertisement revenue.

Also will they still be offering premium memberships because what would be the incentive to sub now that they are backed financially?

Yes. Their premium content is behind a paywall. If you want to see the good stuff you have to pay. That's the incentive: you get to see more things.

They may be keeping premium memberships around just so the people who have bought year-long subscriptions don't feel shafted. That's understandable, and I think it's good of them; I wouldn't be surprised if that stuff has gone away by the end of 2012.

Who gives a shit?

If the content remains the same and the guys are still themselves, then why does them being financially backed or not matter?

mattiewheels

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I could understand them keeping memberships around to stave off having bad movie ads flashing on the sides of the screen, but not sure what will happen there.

Overall, I don't like this move. I really liked being able to switch between CV, GB, Tested, and Screened and knowing I viewing one central family of sites. I think the interaction amongst all the sites made Whiskey-Media one of my favorite internet companies.

It's sort of like Mom and Dad are splitting up :( Guess I'm going to stick next to Pappa Gerstmann.

I can't help it it's just the way I feel, I'm just a sucker for underdogs, it's my problem not theirs, I'm probably going to be accused of being a little crazy but I will notice a big change in their behaviour due to this move, I'm very susceptible to changes in human behaviour, even the smallest of things, before it was about survival, 'winging it', being creative on a low budget, being backed by CBS will cause the atmosphere to change, they may be able to give us more of the same, and maybe even better content, but for me I will be seeing them through a different lens whether I like it or not.

Ok this is legit.

I hope they can still provide that feel for you.

I understand you position more now.

Except I don't know that it was really like this. You may be imagining it; I certainly didn't get the sense that they were just making it, just keeping their heads above water. The only time this stuff really reared its head was when they threatened to segment the Bombcast in two, and I can't imagine you really enjoyed them being "underdogs" then.

Giant bomb probably could have survived on subscriptions alone, for a few years at least. The problem is that all the other WM sites were holding them down, screened, tested, and anime vice were not holding there own, plus the engineering team that needs to be payed.

Could have survived, but would have had to cut down on the travel and other stuff.

Only thing I'm annoyed at for now is knowing its going to take at least 1 month of limited content about actual video games, maybe longer depending on what needs to be done for transition.

I have my worries about things like random pc game with vinnie and dave or load your last save with vinnie and drew and endurance run dieing, or the bombcast being limited to 1 hour 30 minutes, quicklooks being limited to 20 minutes, quicklooks being more focused different types of games, overall less content thanks to time devoted to meetings with 20 different levels of management about nothing. Any of that would be a tragidy, but none of that is certain to happen so I'm not too upset about it yet. I really doubt that they would intentionally move to a more structured professional style to video coverage so I'm not worried about that.

But overall this is nothing like the shift of many of the old 1UP/egm guys to game design and marketing that we had a while back. Now that is an example of an outright destruction of a great gaming media company. All of the great personalities from that situation either no longer can talk candidly publicly on a regular basis, or belong to sites surrounded by other people that make following them unbearable. Memories of that situation really lets you appreciate this situation as being not as bad as it could be. For now this is more of a shift than a destruction. Now if the main staff started to jump ship then maybe its time to get worried.

What were the changes from when they moved from basement to whiskey basement? Was it negative and did you perceive other people felt the same?

So wait. I watched the video on Giant bomb where they hear about being bought via the phonecall.

They seemed nun to pleased by this at ALL. Especially Vinny.

What exactly is happening. Did they even know? Do they even want to be back in the fold with this shit.

Am I the only one that thinks that making giantbomb travel is usually a waste of time? I always went to giantbomb for editorial not interviews. There's other sites that do some great interviews with developers. A live in person bombcast might be a fun thing, but that can only really satisfy a comparatively limited number of people compared to spending time and money on content for the entire internet to enjoy. E3 is really the only placed I'd personally want them to go.

Wait, what video?

From what I've seen in the Aftermath video and what Jeff has said, they've been discussing this for months, so nobody was surprised.

Gerstmann and Davison have been talking since last year. There's no conspiracy.

I think he's talking about the new office video with Vinny on the phone checking old voice mails. If it's that, he needs to work on his comprehension.

I want the guys playing video games, eating bad food, being wacky, drinking and playing video games while eating bad food, being wacky, and drinking. I don't care about an interview with the assistant community manager for Violence Squad 3: Redemption.

I'm just going to really miss the whiskey media interplay. I loved hearing Ryan talk on the Screened podcast because you get to see a side you normally dont.

I just feel so slimy just looking at the new Tested.

Honestly the tested thing bothers me more.

ADAM AND JAIMES TESTED!! right in the fucking logo.

Look I really really like mythbusters, but their name on the logo? Fuck off they weren't there the last two years.

Gross.

This oh god this. There is a reason why I skip basically any quick look EX that isn't Johnny V or Doublefine, the rest have all been awful.

Also skip all the interviews they put in E3 videos. Seriously don't care about whatever bullshit answer they will give to the crew's questions.

Would you rather the site died?

Because I have little doubt based on all this that it wouldn't have lasted through 2012 without something like that happening.

It was the second lowest trafficked Whiskey site.

Both Comic Vine and Anime Vice were beating it.

Yeah, Jeff said in that video with Davison that they were - at the time - trying to figure out where exactly they're going to have to go [in their new building] to record their three-hour podcasts. Plus Jeff reiterated numerous times that everything, from the Bombcast, to the video content, all of that would stay the same. So basically until I see any noticeable changes to Giant Bomb's content, I trust Jeff to be his usual self and not bullshit the fans.

It was funny to watch John get a little taken aback when he realized Jeff was honestly telling him that they'd need somewhere to record 5 hour podcasts for E3.

So what happened to all the equipment? Because if the Giant Bomb guys kept all the audio equipment from Whiskey Media they should be able to find a closet somewhere, right? Or a stall in one of the bathrooms at least.

I loved when Jeff dropped the "We're going to need a bar" and John laughed a bit and then realized he's serious and his face went stiff. Pure gold

I think the part where Jeff said they'd need a bar or something was the 'argh christ' part for John. I guess the Bombhaus is no longer available :(

Honestly that's the saddest part of the move. That place was fantastic for what they were doing, a green screen is REALLY not going to cut it if they plan on keeping a similar atmosphere.

Oh, I was referring to the student house they used during E3. I agree though, their old office was as slick as possible whilst still being GB's sorta style. It shall be missed, but I'm excited to see what the CBS building extension looks like.

I wonder, just out of curiousity, how all the logisitcs behind the scenes will work out. It sounds like they will be sharing a lot of Gamespot's equipment. I wonder if stuff will be more time structured like we only had enough time to schedule 45 minutes to record this quick look or we could only schedule 120 minutes for the podcast this week. I'm probably worrying too much, but Tuesday is awlays great when the Bombcast updates and you see it's like 3 hours long.

No of course not.

If it's a good move for norm/Will I'm happy for them.

that doesn't mean that I can't find the logo/header gross

jesus christ. is this serious? I feel like this has to be a troll post.

you can go to giant bomb and read what they have written and watch the videos if you give half a shit.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Are you talking about when Vinny was listening to his voicemail messages from after he left Gamespot? That CBS call was from when they purchased Gamespot originally, not Giantbomb.

New office looks pretty nice actually.

New office is old office, old office is new office!!!!

Hey Gamespot/bomb i have an idea. They should make it so that premium members are able to view the damn site while at work, fucking websense. I would pay $200 a year for that feature.
