CBS Interactive (GameSpot parent company) buys Giant Bomb

TIME TO DESTROY EVERYTHING AHHHHHH

http://www.giantbomb.com/lets-pull-these-walls-down/17-5794/

Knocking walls out? dadadaaamn

Fuck those cubicles!

I'm hoping they keep putting content up daily. I'm severely starved due to the lack of regular Tested/GB content. That being said there is this brilliant youtube channel which has compiled together several hours worth of the best moments from Giant Bomb Quick Looks and I've been watching them tonight: http://www.youtube.com/user/xpantherx/videos?query=best+quick

I really was on and off with GiantBomb for a while but I think after they realized new releases was boring as hell and they started to shake up their video content that I finally was hooked on to them, and then adding Patrick was enough to keep the podcast from going stale after having the exact same 4 people on every week for several years, and even more if you count the HotSpot years. So I haven't really watched too much of the early stuff.

Hey Gamespot/bomb i have an idea. They should make it so that premium members are able to view the damn site while at work, fucking websense. I would pay $200 a year for that feature.

Maybe you should be working instead of dicking around on the internet. Or look for work outside of a company that treats you like a child.

New office is old office, old office is new office!!!!

WHATS THE OLD OLD OFFICE?!?!

I wonder if they are going to start censoring Giant Bomb comments and all related stuff like the bombcast and videos.

Jeff already addressed this during On The Spot and said they were going to still be just as dirty as before. NOTHING about Giant Bomb is changing except for where they do their work and the fact they now have a lot more money to play with.

So wait. I watched the video on Giant bomb where they hear about being bought via the phonecall.

They seemed nun to pleased by this at ALL. Especially Vinny.

What exactly is happening. Did they even know? Do they even want to be back in the fold with this shit.

Wait...

Did you confuse this segment:
http://www.giantbomb.com/here-is-a-video-shot-in-an-office-on-a-cell-phone/17-5791/

With Vinny and the rest finding out giant bomb is being bought?

That voice mail was from 2008. It was about CNET being bought by CBS.
Giant bomb has known for quite a while now that CBS was going to be buying them...

I was a little worried about the changes to Tested at first, but after seeing all the posts by Will, Im ok with it. It makes sense to have two well known guys attached to the sites name. It will move a lot of new traffic to the site and then people can get to know Will and Norm as well.

I look forward to what the Mythbusters guys have to offer as well. I guess I see it as a similar move that they did with the show. At first no one knew the assistants(Tory, Scottie, Kari and Grant) or the "B" team on the show, but over time they grew into stars in their own right and have just as much time on the show as Jamie and Adam. As long as Will and Norm have as big of a role in the site as Jamie and Adam, I think the site will be fine.

You... are aware they're in their new office in that video, right? Why would they be surprised by a buyout... while they're standing around in the CBS Interactive offices?

Also the phonecall said "CNET". Good ear, man.

Honestly that's the saddest part of the move. That place was fantastic for what they were doing, a green screen is REALLY not going to cut it if they plan on keeping a similar atmosphere.
Yeah, that's basically how I feel.

There was a certain atmosphere to the GB guys being their own bosses in their own offices and this is something that came across in pretty much all of their live content. Even in the 8-12 months we still have left with the old-style GB before its eventual ruin (Nothing good ever ultimately comes of these acquisitions for the smaller party, they said it themselves on the Bombcast! :p), I think they'll have a hard time recapturing that atmosphere.

Will still follow them and cross my fingers that this works out for them, but you know, I'm a realist.

Well good thing are a personality driven site then, unlike a tech company lets say. You really think Jeff and the gang would of okay'd being bought out if in 12 months they would change their whole editorial style? And even Jeff said I think it may be in this thread - that they themselves want to grow, so that it is easier on the site in case of family, health, etc emergencies.

It's not cool to like Giant Bomb anymore, now they're pretty much the Wal-Mart of the internet. Fuck you, CBS!

This is why this whole thing just feel ridicolous. They keep making all the content as good as before, fine. They start changing, complain then. Now they have a solid base of munnay so the can do more shit.

Hey, I like the site, I'll be more than happy if Giantbomb will be the one to buck that by now well established trend. For the time being, we're all (hopefully) sticking to these guys, but it's not surprising if many of the fans' long-term predictions turn out rather negative. "It's all great until it's not" etc etc.

And, obviously this was from a consumer standpoint only. This should be a great deal for these guys personally, as I assume that at least the founding members all had stakes in the site and this represents a nice and well deserved payout for their hard work over the last years.

Not to single you out, but I think it does Jeff and co a HUGE disservice to assume that they're somehow not being honest about this.

I don't think they are being dishonest. They just aren't quite telling the whole story and I don't really understand why. Some people equate holding info back to lying, but I don't.

At the end of the day, it is their business. They are free to share whatever info they want. So, if they feel like an explanation is just too much to ask - well, fine. I personally don't see a problem with:

"hey guys, we have been really busy because our investor decided to cash in their chips. We couldn't buy them out. So, we have been shopping around for a new buyer. That new buyer is CBS Interactive. It was close, for a while, we weren't sure we could get a buyer that we would like. Phew! Now they do own Gamespot, but let us tell you why that is not a problem..."

At the end of the day, it is their business. I can understand if they feel like they would rather just move on than dwell on it.

When was the last time they actually did a taste test for energy drinks or food? Feels like it's been years.

that's the last time I listened to them consistently, though I enjoyed every episode. The taste test was always kind of funny. reminded me of metal gear solid 3, where you have to listen to him eat and swallow, then react.

There was actually a developer on On the Spot which congratulated GameSpot for acquiring Giant Bomb and mentioned energy drinks, and that was a dead giveaway that he probably hasn't listened to them in the last 3 years.

they where doing mailbags for weird foreign energy drinks up to recently so they haven't stopped all energy drink coverage.

I think they just ran out of drinks that didn't just taste like every other energy drink ever.

You can only taste test for so long.

On a recent episode, either Drew or Dave (I think Dave?) asked where the energy drinks were and Ryan said, "That's so 2008."

I've been in the process of listening to all the bombcasts since the beginning, and about halfway through 2009 they kind of agree that they all either taste bad, or like citrus. So they probably did run out of the funnier ones.

true. chemically cream soda and/or chemically citrus soda with lots of extra sugar and a slight burn in your throat from the sour aftertaste. I love energy drinks but they feel so bad for you. I'd rather just drink more coffee.

Man I like Jeff, he's pretty frickin smart (when it comes to the industry at least), and he's not afraid to say what he's thinking.

Steve Peterson said:
It's just more evidence of the turmoil in game journalism.

Jeff Gerstmann said:
The turmoil is larger than just journalism, it's the Internet. We're at a time of great change, what advertising means on the Internet is changing in a very big way, sort of like you're seeing on television with DVRs making standard ads obsolete. Business is going to have to change, and we're all going to have to adapt to move forward and keep going for the years to come. People that stand by as existing ad formats get less and less useful are going to feel the brunt of stuff like this.

I was shocked to hear the news about the buy out. But I am not worried. This man will save us from the internet.

For about 6 months.

'Hell we're in the same building anyway so it made sense to just fold GB into GS etc etc.

I think you have to think about this a little bit more

- Jeff isn't dumb and he isn't going to walk into a situation where hes going to get burned again. He said during the announcement live steam that this wasn't the best financial offer, but this was the one that made sense to help them grow GB.
- John Davison is also not dumb. He pushed personalities at 1up and that's what he wants to do here. He's not going to roll GB into GameSpot. However, Davison will likely push GB content on GS because GS simply has a bigger reach than GB right now, so this just helps GB grow.
- Jeff & the rest of GB are the stars of this deal. It doesn't make any sense for GS to try to fold GB in because these guys will just leave and make their own website again. They've done it before in a period of about 4 or 5 months, so they could probably do it again even quicker. And without these guys, GB would be a worthless brand.

What will probably happen is that we're going to see GB travel more. They might end up in Germany or Japan this year. And we're probably going to see some GS personalities occasionally cross over to do some Quick Looks or TNT content to make those guys less of this unified voice that GS has been and flesh out their personalities more to their audience. Now maybe you might say "fuck that, I don't want GS people in my Giant Bomb", but I don't think its going to be a negative-- sometimes its nice to have new people to freshen up the lineup. I think Giant Bomb got a massive shot in the arm when the Tested guys and obviously Patrick started appearing in their content as they started to get stale after the first couple of years.

Why is it that they cleared out their offices a week before the sale? Had Whiskey already decided that they were closing up shop and selling off all of the properties, and so it was just a matter of choosing between various offers?

Maybe it takes a week to clear out an entire office full of production stuff? Plus transitioning along with preparing the announcement could be stressful. It would be best to make it as hassle-free as possible and not worry about rushing the equipment out.

They probably agreed to the sale earlier, but it was made official only recently.
