Ridge Racer Unbounded Review Thread [More Reviews]

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
it appears that, for whatever odd reason, they've made the track editor be unlockable by progress. The unlocked and advanced editor looks very detailed.

really? where did you hear that? genuinely curious.

Still not getting the game. The lack of 60fps, the choice of music, speed and the lack of vivid and vibrant colors, is a no-no. RR always had that "pop" of colors in their games that is easily accompany by an amazing soundtrack. If this is the direction NAMCO wants to take the RR brand to, I'm out. Is like SEGA making VF with super-meters and air combos.

Maybe it's just a bad translation. But I took the minus bit to mean the advanced mode only got unlocked if you beat the entire game.

Less cool thing is that this mode is really fun and useful as the game plays out, because then you have access to the maximum number of blocks, city elements and attributes (obstacles and such).

Minuses: City Creator is extended only if you beat the whole game.

This continued to be the most idiotic statement I head this month, and get stupider every time it is brought up. I hear the same thing for Metal Gear Solid Rising.

...both games seem to be better than their main series counterparts.

At least the Resident Evil guys seem happy to accept their franchise is dead regardless of what it is called.

PS: That FIFA Street game brings shame on Europe

? I said that doesn't mean that the main series is better, I was saying that it doesn't deserve the RR name because it's a totally different game. What's so idiotic about that?

How can both Unbounded and MG:R be better than their main series counterparts when it's a totally different kind of game?

Some people were saying it does not "deserve" the RR name - which is what I thought you were saying. Sorry if I came across as crass with the previous comment

However, EA did it with Need for Speed to launch the Shift brand (which was a sim game, much different from normal arcade NFS stuff)- and then dropped it for the second release.

It is fine for Namco to attach the the RR name if it helps them launch a new offshoot of the series..

...although if they could launch it with causing complete confusion to US customers that would also be helpful

I don't get why people don't think this is worthy of the Ridge Racer name. The last two games were utter, utter shit and totally half-assed cash-ins. The Ridge Racer name has been worthless for years.

Off topic but why do reviews from the UK say 'then' all the time in the middle of sentences? I notice this all the time from Eurogamer and Edge.

This came up in today's AC3 preview. Here's a quote from the comments.

Stop writing 'then' as a sentence modifier, then. It's sloppy and unattractive writing, apparently an unconvincing reach at a casual, conversational tone. It's fucking ubiquitous on Eurogamer, and increasingly common amongst young British cultural journalists on non-gaming websites and magazines as well. Stop it, it's just horrible.

Regardless of your feelings towards RR, calling this game RR is a disservice because it seems, overall, people have a negative view of the franchise. I certainly don't feel that way. RR7 is one of my favorite racing games.

So on one hand, everyone may know RR, but that also means people may just see a new RR game and dismiss it because of the name alone, which isn't fair to Bugbear.

yeah man, when something is shitty the only logical course of action is to make it shittier.

So far it feels like a cross between NFS Underground and Burnout. The handling is really heavy the cars feel like tanks. I am a Ridge Racer vet so I was expecting at least a good drift mechanic, the drifting is very hard to pull off. On a positive note though the graphics are nice, it does seem to take place at night 99% of the time though.

Sold. So, so sold. Heavy cars in a street environment? Kinda have to have it, you know?

There are several parts of the city to unlock I am at the third one at the moment. They do differ slightly visually the third part of the city is the affluent area with high end buildings to smash through.

How are you unlocking parts of the city? Have you played with the track editor yet?

maybe he means 'progressing further' into the options.
Maybe you have to make your way through 2 or 3 option screens, something not all reviewers are able to do.
i read another review claiming the editor was pretty basic...advanced editor is not a pc exclusive, right ?

Answered it here.

Maybe I'm just reading things into the translation. My interpretation is things are unlocked, but maybe I'm just assuming incorrectly.

I wouldn't be that harsh about it, but the spirit is right: RR hasn't had prestige in a long time, so with Namco it's diversify or die. Oh and look, it seemed to pay off! But no, some people still want to play the same game over and over again because they can't bear to admit that video games aren't exactly the same as they were in their childhood.

Please tell me you've put some hours into this before posting such impressions. I trust some reviewers partially so a forum users brief impressions never sway me in any direction.

I'm always up for a great arcade racer, but I'm still as skeptical as hell about this game.

I really don't care about one high review score.

While Unbounded is no doubt a step in the right direction for the franchise, perhaps it was a little early to leave the safety of Ridge City behind.
