Predefined roles are good when the game has evolved so much. It gives players a good starting point to look at and play around with. It's OK to do builds that are outside of the box, but it's on you to make them work. Take Swift's semicarry Lina for instance. You have a lot of people who go lolwtf armlet on Lina r u coolhwipped? But I'm thoroughly convinced now that Lina is most effectively played as a semicarry instead of a support.

If you can make it work, go for it. And realize that some items will simply never belong on certain heroes. If I see a desolator on Zeus, I might just kill myself.

On a side note, Lone Druid sounds like a less pissed and much older version of Lirlond.

When does this play? Sounds great! One thing Dota is missing is some good music. The gameplay is fun and the character audio is amazing but the game doesn't feel exciting without music. I can see how it could be distracting during play but I'd like some music options.

It was playing for me when I was Radiant, jungling on my side. Maybe it's the Jungle Theme, maybe it's specific Radiant-theme Jungle, who knows.

That team matchmaking stuff has been known about for weeks, they're adding an MM queue for people who want to just team vs team. You'll still be able to queue as 5 for normal MM I'd imagine.

Wonder how many players will be allowed in a team, hopefully they add it soon.

Is it ok if I go MKB, Helm of Dominator, Heart of Tarasque Crystal Maiden from now on?

I heard it while Milk was at mid as Lone Druid.

But Dazzle is a carry.

Jokes aside*, I once had someone rip into my throat when I went phase boots on Tiny, because it didn't subscribe to his notion of the perfect (and, in fact, the only viable) build for Tiny. It's not even like phase is bad on Tiny, either. Just, this guy had his mind set on one very specific cookie-cutter Tiny build and refused to accept any other. And a lot of heroes are more versatile than people give them credit for being. So I can totally empathize with the idea that people need to shut the fuck up and open their minds a little bit.

*I'm not joking.

If two people on your team get arcane phase are pretty fucking good on Tiny, especially because it's pretty much an early-mid game build after which it's usefulness (on Tiny) completely fades.

Also if you go for agha treads aren't that bad either.

Yeah, those are just new strings related to it.

That is exactly what I'm talking about in my previous post. I can agree with this.
If you have the skill, the game knowledge, and the experience you should be able to pull off something like that Lina thing you mentioned. I'm obviously not talking about new pubbers just starting out. If you're just starting out, sticking to a common build is the best way to learn, but people should learn that the common builds are not set in stone and be encouraged to look for better, undiscovered builds once they reach a certain point. To clarify, this is not about me. I'm not saying I've reached that point.

I just prefer phase on Tiny 'cause it makes it easier to catch up with people running away (esp. before I get my blink). I have no issue with people who prefer arcane, as I definitely have mana problems from time to time. But this guy I'm talking about was so pissed he went and AFK'd in the fountain once he saw I had them. U:

Agha Tiny is most funnest. X:

You have obviously never used smoke. The music while smoked is great.

Turns out my best hero so far is Invoker. I feel kinda bad though, I mostly spam Tornado+EMP, though occasionally throw in a Cold Snap. Tried an Exort build, but I felt so weak.

90% of the players don't have this. Don't inspire braveness into people, comfort zones are there for a reason.

Was just playing a game against a son of a bitch Ursa. One thing I can't figure out.. on more than one occasion it appeared as though we took out all his health and killed him, only for him to reappear in place a few seconds later fully healed. I haven't had the game that long but I don't think that's one of his stock abilities. What gives?

He had an item called Aegis of the Immortal, which revives him once after he dies and then disappears. It is obtained from killing a super creep called Roshan.

Ursa can kill Roshan by himself while most teams need 4-5 people.

A monster called Roshan spawns at the beginning of the game, and 10 minutes after he dies.

When he dies he drops an item that takes up an inventory slot, if you kill a person holding that item they will resurrect with full mana/health after 3 seconds.

He gets tougher each time he dies, the third time he dies he also drops cheese, which is another item. It heals for 2,500 health/mana I believe, when used.

Roshan stuns, has a linken's sphere type effect, and is immune to some spells. Illusions are dispelled when used to attack him.

He is located between middle lane and bottom lane, on the north side, above the rune.

Ursa is the best rosh soloer in the game, he's able to do it easily once he has vladmir or a lifesteal aura from someone else. Its a common pub strat to do rosh on him, usually by smoking into it.

Lycan is another rosh soloer, he's also able to do it once he has vlads and medallion.

Ah okay, thanks guys that certainly explains it. I knew who Roshan was and that he dropped something but I didn't know what it was. Guess that is a critical piece of information!

Providence. I was just looking through Steam and noticed I have this... Crazy! Not sure when it showed up.

Can anyone direct me to an intro/newbie guide of WTF I should do? I never played DOTA in WC3 or anything in this genre before.

How can you guys think valve should be adding more than 1 hero per week?

League of Legends is usually adding one new hero every 2-3 weeks on average, Valve is already pushing them out 2-3 times faster. Granted the heros are already created from the original DotA, but they still need to be modelled, and have the appropriate mechanics for their abilities.

Then, there is balance testing, DotA 2 is not exactly the same as DotA 1 due to a different engine, they need to make sure that the hero's balance didn't get messed up from the switch, and testing 1 new hero at a time is much less confusing than balancing five of them at the same time.

How can anyone expect Valve to pump out heros 4-6 times faster than an equivalent game? One hero per week is already an amazing pace I think.

Even though I don't necessarily believe Valve should pump out multiple heroes a week, this argument is flawed. First off like you stated the amount of work needed to port a hero from 1 to 2 is waaaay less than League creating a new hero. In addition Valve has way more manpower and funding than Riot so the two aren't comparable. Finally, and this is the biggest one that people tend to forget, THIS IS A BETA and betas are for testing so worrying about balance or incompatibilities is silly, especially when tournaments can still use the most stable version and CM won't have said heroes in it before Valve is comfortable with them.

I am the opposite. Tornado/EMP build is so lame and easy to do. Exort buffs your attack damage and makes last hitting a lot easier. The meteor and sunstrike are both amazing skills, add in the Forge Spirit to take down buildings (and last hitting also goes great with that) and you have a great build that is way more powerful. Then later in the game when you have some points spread out, between Quas and Exort you can do Cold Snaps/Ice walls and deafening blasts (if you put at least 1 in Wex). Great aoe + slow/stuns and can even hit people from all over the map.

I've won plenty of games without using a single tornado/emp. Feels a lot better to me personally.

Read the OP, watch some streams or VODs.

The first things you want to learn are:

Map awareness - If you don't know where you are, or whats going on, you will probably never win. Learn the map!

Last hits/Denies - Don't do what every bad new player does: Autoattack creeps for no reason. Unless you are trying to push the lane out to take a tower, -only- strike a creep to get the last hit on it. Which will give you gold, which you need. You can do this with your own ally creeps by pressing A, and clicking on them.

Learn the items! - Purge has a lot of videos on youtube to help new players, including a rather long detailing of items in the game. He also plays heroes and explains the purpose and role they have in a match. Many people suggest starting as a support, and I would say that is the safest route, but it doesn't really matter what you pick. Find one that looks cool, and watch some videos or google some guides.

Edit: Oh, duh. You also need to understand roles. If you play a support character, support your allies. If you are carrying, focus on farming as best you can. Every role has a priority in a game. Also, wards wards wards wards. They give you vision of the map. Look up some guides on where to ward if you are going to support. This is so insanely important, yet half the people who try to play support never do it. Wards win games. Please ward :D

How do you pause?

For specific heroes, look up guides on playdota and then watch the corresponding Purge plays with ..... to get a basic understanding of how the hero plays..

Thanks guys, I'll check all this info out! TBH, I don't know what a jungling is or what pushing the lane entails. Excited to learn. If I can play Paradox grand strategy reliably, I think I have the capacity to eventually figure this out.

The basics are not that hard to understand. In many ways it's like understanding how any sport works. The problem is playing it, which involves a lot of teamwork, fine skills, multitasking, memorization, etc.
