Yeah, I got desynched at that point, taking their separation as a new obstacle to overcome, rather than as the end of the story of that summer.
That would have avoided my mixed reaction, since it would have just been straightforwardly bittersweet, without feeling like the show suddenly told me I should turn off the sad now.
But...hmm.
Then I probably would have been wishing she'd come back somehow.
The more I mull this over, the more I think my reaction was just a case of some arbitrary expectations on my part.

Seriously. When I say this is a show that actually feels planned as a complete text and not a bunch of people mashing random crap together into a single TV series, I mean it! They knew how to write a good "mono"-romcom-"aware" (someone will find a new portmanteau, I'm sure
), and they should be applauded for it!It's really the whole mono no aware/:firehawk thing though. And your reaction at the end is exactly what they were trying to satisfy as well, which is why they tacked on that ending. They produced the conditions where you wanted to see that happen and when it did, you were probably happy that it did end that way, I'm sure.

These early episodes sure like to introduce annoying characters: first Luffy, now Usopp. Hopefully they become more tolerable down the line.

Honestly, nobody changes much for a very long while. As prominent as the theme of 'NAKAMA' is, One Piece is hardly character-driven. With that said, and the flip-side, it's world-building is first-class.
You guys have some kind of fixation with Secret Base.

Ano Hana's OP is better than its ED.
Welp, now I have Puzzle on loop and there's no signs of stopping anytime within the next 8 hours.
Usopp has the worst intro arc of any character, but he becomes more tolerable with time and eventually has the most character development of any of the Strawhat crew.

Does the Buggy arc count as the Zoro intro arc? Because I would say that's worse. Kuro is at least a cooler antagonist. He was what made it a "just one more episode" show for me.

This show could have ended at 10 and I'd probably think more highly of it. till the end the whole alien business just seemed completely detached from the rest of the show and just feels unnecessary. Then again, my latent immunty to :firehawk might apply too. Still, my biggest beef is still that I never gave a crap about Ichika at all, which would actually be a huge problem if the rest of the show weren't so well done. As it is, I really did like it. Solid enough.
Remon is and will forever be the best character.

The simple plot actually SHOULD HAVE worked well with the 11 episode format. But instead they decided to go on totally retarded tangents that they never bothered following up on and instead felt half baked. I'm really bitter about how it all went down.

Its not really child death. Its more nostalgia (or forced nostalgia in this case). Its why Square Enix has been able to keep afloat all these years.

Wow Shiro went off, those cosmic powers sure can work wonders. Appropriately, Akio Sugino was the animation director for this episode which ended up being the most visually impressive of the show. Definitely added to what was a key episode in the show leading into the final 2 episodes, particularly considering the events that took place. Without going into to much detail, the Federation Army has brought its full force down on the Moad population and things start looking pretty grim for everyone. Full scale war has broken out.
As I mentioned in my previous post there has been a noticeable visual improvement during the second half in the show. After looking more into it, apparently the show went off air for about a year at one point, so perhaps there were some staff changes or budget increases during that time. Looking at the episode list, its a pretty fucked up spot to go on hiatus for such a long time. I wonder what caused that to happen?
