Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

axisofweevils

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
We have the Wii all over again.

And Analysts will be saying "Well, Nintendo got lucky with the DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U, but the Wii U 2 is definitely going to fail. The Microsony PX will definitely beat them this time. Microsony even has a revolutionary new tablet controller and 3D without glasses!"

I hope not.

I hope we see at least some classics and a variety of genres in ports, even older games.

I'm sure I can come up with a laundry list of games that would be great candidates.

I'd actually like to see Ubisoft give Prince of Persia 2008 another shot on Wii U, this is Ubisoft after all, the port madhouse in launch periods. Rayman 3 HD even would be nice (better than Rayman 2 AGAIN).

A lot of PC games could make neat choices, another Ubisoft game; Might & Magic Heroes VI could be a nice choice, wouldn't this possibly be a great choice for tablet use?

Shame that Ubisoft usually ports old-ass games, and poorly at that (how hard would've it been to do a perfect port of Rayman 2 on DC to 3DS? WAY more powerful and yet it runs inferior, could've at least been the PS2 version...).

I'd say Ghost Recon Future Soldier would be a lock, if only Online wasn't on the way, might cannibalize sales (unless they don't see that with Online being an "eShop" game, versus Future Soldier being a retail game).

I wish they ported the original Ghost Recon to Wii rather than have Next Level Games make a poor light-gun shooter. They even called it simply "Ghost Recon", wtf?

It's silly if Nintendo is holding back 3rd parties from discussing cross platform Wii U projects. Who's gonna care about something like RE6 Wii U when it's old news in June.

A different question, but given how quite a few developers/publishers seem to not give a shit about Wii U, I think it's legitimate to tackle the elephant in the room: What if Wii U succeeds ?
It depends a lot if the other consoles succeed as well. If the other consoles are very succesful, it could be enough to substain a good profit. I would compare it to iOS and Android. Both things are very successful, but one doesnt have to be on both platforms to be succesful. It could however be an advantage to be on both platform of course.

It also depends on what makes a system succeed. The Wii succeeded a lot because of those minigame collections, and that is why we saw so many games like this.

That was a joke.
Ok :) I thought you ment that since it was a yearly version of a game, that this could be decribed as shovelware.

I don't think so, because even IF developers are gun shy about the Wii U now, the Wii U should be easier to port to than the Wii was. If the Wii U takes off without the help of third parties, they'll still be eagerly crowding in a year or so later, not staying away forever because it's too expensive to downport.

That IdeaMan guy basically "confirmed" (I use that term lightly, especially since I'm a bit suspicious of him) 512MB for OS, and Arkham said 1GB for games.

Speaking of which, you guys really shouldn't have scared him away like that. >_>;

"That IdeaMan guy" is here, you should be more polite :p

Well the PS2 port was announced shortly before release of the GCN version. And was then released roughly year after that announcement. Which is a pretty good indication that they actually changed their mind. Capcom even said that there was no exclusivity deal for RE4, so there was no reason to be secretive about the PS2 version. Games are usually designed from the beginning to be multi platform so that the code is relatively platform agnostic. Porting the code over to the PS2 was a lot of effort going from the interviews.

I conceded the point long ago because I had the facts wrong.

Still, RE6 will be there. Capcom and Nintendo are the industry's new "be sties". And judging from the 3DS and the heavy Capcom support it has, it would seem that the "Capcom Curse" has lifted.

Imagine a Drawsomething version on the WiiU. Instant classic. (might have been discussed before)

I remain convinced that if Nintendo wants a killer app on part with Wii Sports, they'll create a Mario Paint spiritual successor (U Paint?) with all the production potential + more modern ways to manipulate sound and images.

Seriously, what the fuck is going on with Nintendo right now.

No Tomb Raider. Kojima not making anything Wii U related. RE6 not announced for Wii U. Suda 51 has no Wii U dev kits. Epic Mickey not on Wii U.

I'll buy Wii U regardless but Nintendo sure isn't making any effort with third parties.

I would not totally exclude the possibility that a version of Epic Mickey will launch on Wii U, it's just that the current project is apparently Wii-Lead, declare right now "oh, we have a Wii U iteration for the line-up", and you would push a lot of Nintendofans to wait & see rather than buy the Wii version.

For Resident Evil, clearly, i wouldn't been afraid.

And for Suda, he is more excited by other perspectives...that could lead to the Wii U Nintendo Network :)

Although he's excited about crossmedia products, Suda, who says he regularly craves new challenges and the chance to explore unfamiliar arenas, is most curious right now about opportunities to develop for mobile and social platforms. "I would like to come up with games that are my style, with a smaller team... just like the games that were Nintendo-style, 8-bit kind of games," he reflects. "That would be a challenge, too."

Really, people should wait until E3 before panicking, the bigger picture will be much clearer.

Exactly. I don't understand Nintendo's strategy here. Media blackout for a full fucking year is a little much.

Until PS4/720 are released next year.

If the rumours are true and PS4 is actually on par with current gen... then the discussion gets really interesting.

They're not holding anything back, there's no 3rd party support coming that's all. Well, that's my "pissed off fan" thoughts anyway.

Yeah, I agree. If I honestly thought they were going to unleash a series of megatons then I could understand it but I just don't. We know the hardware is going to be modest. We know about most of the controller's features. They're unlikely to get something massive like a GTAV exclusive (It'd have to be that level to make my head explode). I expect something like Steam and Origin to be on the system in some way. There will be social networking apps and useful things like that. They will have a decent online. They may do some cool 3DS integration, and who knows, we might even get multiple colours.

Basically I see it like this.

For years fans have been clamouring for many features in a Nintendo system that Nintendo have dragged their heels on. This time around we may actually get some/lots of those things. So none of it is really a surprise, just a welcome advance in Nintendo's offerings.

Hype <----------------------------------------------------------------->me.

True. I don't even give two shits about the third party titles announced right now.

It would make sense for Nintendo to force these publishers to keep quiet about their Wii U versions of games if there's a feature in the games that Nintendo hasn't announced yet and wants to keep as a surprise for E3... Hmmm.

I don't expect the PS4 to be on par with this gen, and neither should anyone else

It should be a fair bump up.

Then again, I also believe people should not expect the Wii U to be "on par" on a technical level either

What one should expect is that on screen may not be a huge difference from what we see right now on the PS3, simply because a certain "standard" is set by high definition and modern day shaders

I expect both the Wii U and PS4 to be more powerful than the current gen, but the difference will not be noticeable at first glance. It won't be like previous generations' differences

Wii U may very well be "on par" from a what you see on screen perspective...which follows what IdeaMan and others have been saying

PS4 I expect to be beefier, but I would wait until its shown before any conclusions are drawn. Even if we take the current rumours for what they're worth, that hardware is a lot stronger than current gen.

I also would not mind if we got some "best of generation" ports brought over. Darksiders and Assassin's Creed titles are pretty good candidates, along with Dark Souls. It would certainly not be the worst thing in the world to see these titles on the U.

And how about an idea from waaaay left field: there's a thread on here about classic role-playing dungeon crawling games here. I'd love to see Nintendo partner with GOG and get some older RPGs onto the system. I'm talking classics from the 1990s and early 00s. It'd definitely be an oddball moment for Nintendo, but it would also bring-in a different crowd to the Nintendo console, especially if they don't have to worry about fighting hardware in order to make those types of older games work.

Meanwhile, while I'm fantasizing, I'd like a pony and a billion dollars and a huge estate with Nintendo statues and Gossip Stones all over the grounds. And a Cuccoo ranch. And please let it be along the parade route Uptown. Amen.

...

Also.. if Nintendo's goal is to get expectations dampened-down in time for E3, I'd say that their ruse is working. E3's gonna be fuuuun! :)

Nintendo was lying, you can play the wii u anywhere in your house within 100 ft of the wii u, including the shitter. Killer console.

Yeah, but I'm already expecting the majority of developers not to put much more effort into the Wii U ports. I mean even if they did add new features, what's the harm in announcing PS360 games for the Wii U. It's not like they're going to give us details until E3 anyways.

The media black out makes perfect sense for two reasons.

1. The hardware was obviously not finalized. All the games would still be very early WIP.

2. They don't know what Sony and MS's cards are yet.

In other news, Miyamoto has visited the Louvre

Yeah, and they are using 3DS as "tour/visit/multimedia guide". It's pretty cool actually, with even 3D models of some masterpieces.

Here's the official site: http://www.louvre.fr/l-audioguide-du-musee/audioguide-louvre-nintendo-3ds

http://www.francesoir.fr/loisirs/no...es-nintendo-3ds-comme-audioguides-208585.html

As it's a 5 years contract between Nintendo and Le Louvre, maybe one day, we'll see some Wii U stations in the museum :p

You mean Wii U is pulling a Vita ?
Yeah, oh and "lol, it's Nintendo"

It really doesn't make sense, unless the new Wii U is nothing like it was at last E3.
Exactly. It's not hard to think that they're hiding something really, really massive and cool, but in the past when I've been hyped as all fuck for Nintendo, they give us something like Wii Music. I've always seen Nintendo as a bunch of dudes so far up their own arses they're almost inside out. Thing is, sometimes they find something up there that just blows us away and that we'd never have thought of.

Essentially, my puny human mind is no match for the House of Mario.

Yes, but I would imagine in the last, say 3 months things have been coming together well both in hardware and software so to still have everything tied down just seems stupid.

Even if they do know what their cards are, they can't change their software or hardware. I'm sure the hardware must be about to go into production if they're looking at a November release. If it's earlier, and they're aiming for worldwide, they probably have already started right?

I was thinking the same thing when the $180 material costs rumor came out. If the WiiU is coming out worldwide this November, production stage might have started now.

But then we'll wait for the console to release.
This is my first time waiting for a console while following any kind of slight news on internet.
It was so much better when I didn't care.

Why believe IdeaMan and not him, especially since Lherre (or whatever) agrees with him? (Or Arkham says he agrees at least.).

Old debate, actually, lherre agree with both of us, because the elements that we've given concerning the Wii U (and other posters as well) aren't conflicting at all, you just have to consider all the parameters/context, etc. It has already been explained in Thread 2.

Really, there isn't an arkam "underpowered Wii U" camp, and another one expecting a super beast.

Oh absolutely. Life is lovely when you don't care. Coming to NeoGAF has been the death of my soul.

With Wii I was reasonably hyped and I'd look on gaming websites from time to time leading up to it's release. Now I have NeoGAF with 50,000 threads per second being updated, some by people who actually know shit, it's like a damned drug.

I'm still kinda holding-out hope that one OH FUCK moment where Miyamoto or Iwata brings something out onto stage that has everyone in here freaked-out and thinking that they're not really seeing what they're seeing. Those kinds of "I-remember-where-I-was-when-I-saw-that-for-the-first-time" moments are worth their weight in gold.

That's the best we can hope for. The second best is a stellar lineup of first and third-party games.

The least we can hope for is a stellar line-up of first-party games and one or two non-port third-party goodies.

You aren't kidding. I have three Nintendo tabs permanently opened on my iPad, and this thread is one of them. I wake-up, check the thread, get to work, check the thread, climb into bed, check the thread. "Like a drug" is a damn good description.

2. Why would they care?

Because the cat was already out of the bag that they were going to be first to market. It was about control of information, more than anything else. To walk into E3 2012 and have nothing to surprise people with would have been a disaster.

so, it happened - i had a dream that i was at a small store that broke the WU's street date. it was weird cause i was conscious of the fact that E3 hadn't happened yet, but somehow, this had to be legit.
it came out to like $320 something with taxes, and the dude only had 5 so of course i was the last one and a friend let me skip (she was buying something else there anyway i guess). looking back, it looked like a super famicom with a cable box or something, i have no idea.

i was only salty cause the guy said he had no games for it, but i figured id load my purchases from virtual console or something - then i saw at the register (after i was done buying it) an Ys 7 bundle! i'm not even that huge an Ys fan, but i wouldve played that shit.
also, thinking about it in post-dream logic, it was even weirder because there was no pad/tablet controller, but there was somehow a racing wheel and like a flight stick? i think half of this was gravijah's fault, he talks about these dumb things and plants seeds in my brain....but at least he was still wrong about the $350 price tag.

gonna be a long few months here.

Right, now this news definitely hasn't been posted.

Definitely.

Spanish retailer lists Wii U for 399.99 Euros.

(That's $522 US for those across the pond.)

http://translate.google.es/translat...thevault.es/posible-precio-para-wii-u&act=url

Sorry for the Google Translate Spanglish....

So basically $399 USD or less, if the Wii launch price difference holds up.

(Wii launched at 249 Euros in Spain when it was $249 USD here, so.... keep that in consideration folks)

EDIT: (Also, Spanish pricing includes sales tax... so there's that, too)

Reggie said it would be for those who have lots of disposable income, but for Nintendo to have their own type of $599 moment? Eeeesh..

That would translate to a US$399.99 MSRP, due to the way these fucking companies work.

Also, I want to be shown as crashing into the hype train.
