I hope the sticks on the Upad are better than the 3DS. I thought Mario felt kinda sluggish to control in 3D land and that could be down the huge dead zone of the analogue stick.

Jeez I never-ever thought i would be complaining about the controls of a Mario games, they're usually spot-on.

If new Wii launches with Mario... it will be the first time since Nintendo 64, right? That would be killer.

I still wish they would not call it Wii. Why not just call it something Nintendo? Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64. Then, we got Gamecube, um wut? Wii? Where did this come from?

Game Boy to DS I have similar thoughts.

Last I checked the name was not final.

They would be crazy not to use Wii. A lot of people probably don't even know that the Wii was made by Nintendo, just that it is called the Wii.

I doubt the next 2D Mario would be released on Wii U and 3DS. Smash 4 is coming to both because there's opportunities for each system to offer its own spin on that game, what with the personalised experience Sakurai mentioned for 3DS, but Mario doesn't offer that opportunity, so it'll come to 3DS only.

Damn it now I don't know if I want this to be called Super Mario 4 or Super Mario Universe.

Wait, there's a 3DS 2D Mario game on the way for the fourth quarter, right? That means the Wii U one will (hopefully) be called Super Mario Universe. Just seems like an inevitable title.

So freaking excited to finally be hearing things.

It works for Smash Bros because it isn't a handheld franchise. It's basically a "take a console game with you" game, but Mario definitely has a heavy presence on handhelds, and I just can't see them going this route for a Mario title. There may be integration if you have both games, but they won't be the same thing.

I would like to see this:

Combined with this:

For a new Mario Bros graphic style. The colors of Mario World with the style of DKC Returns would probably look pretty amazing.

Count me among those who are praying for 3D.

Also, I hope it is not simply another Galaxy. I want them to reach even further.

Reach for the stars Miyamoto!

Spring 2006 - New Super Mario Bros.
Fall 2007 - Super Mario Galaxy
Fall 2009 - New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Spring 2010 - Super Mario Galaxy 2
Fall 2011 - Super Mario 3D Land
Fall 2012 - New Super Mario Bros. Mii
2013 / 2014 - Super Mario Galaxy HD

The math works. The big exception was 3D land which the Galaxy team squeezed in in 13 months. But an HD sequel would be quite the opposite.

Mario 64 isn't even "real" Mario to me. Mario 64 and Sunshine are like weird aberrations in my mind. Linear, left --> right Mario games are what I look for in Mario. The Galaxy games translate that to 3D beautifully.

But that's just me. I realize this is a subjective thing, hah.

Agree 100% I hope they don't go away from this anytime soon.

There's all kinds of styles to Mario. It usually changes constantly, which is why I'm hoping they don't make a third New Super Mario Bros game. They've done what they can do with it, and it isn't that great of a style of game to begin with.

Galaxy 2 wrapped around the same time as NSMBWii, Nintendo just held it back for strategic reasons.

I'm currently banking on it being a new 3D Mario w/ 2 player co-op utilizing the tablet screen. But I don't think it's being targeted for Wii U's launch this year. They'll sell Wii U on the promise of that title coming soon after. With the possibility of delays being accounted for, I'd say October 2013 isn't unreasonable.

Oh god I hope they call it New Super Mario Bros. Wii U. It'll only further Japan's weird tendency to stack unnecessary modifiers to their titles:

Metal Gear
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid Rising
Metal Gear Solid Rising Revengeance

Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.
New Super Mario Bros.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
New Super Mario Bros. Wii U

Have not forgot. But technically.

Satoru Iwata
"there will also be a new 2D Mario this year."
Could be Paper Mario. Could be Mario vs Donkey Kong. Could be something different.

Shigeru Miyamoto
"we will show a new super mario bros. for wii u showing the screen zap feature"
Is a Super Mario Bros. game.

I am entertaining the idea of a dual sku release New Super Mario Bros. game. It could happen. If Smash Bros. is doing it, why not New Super Mario Bros.

Agreed on all points. There's plenty room for different kinds of Mario games. And the "New" games feel very aesthetically stale compared to both Galaxy and the older sprite based 2D games.

Looking forward to a more focus on adventure/exploration. Galaxy 2 linear levels were such a disappointment...
I have a question for people who feel this way: when/how did you develop this preference? Was Super Mario 64 the first Mario game you played? Was it your favorite? Did it redefine Mario games for you? Cause none of the Mario games before 64 placed a big emphasis on non-linear exploration. There were branching paths and things like that, but it was pretty straight forward. I loved Mario 64 when I played it in middle school, but it never really felt like "Mario" to me. I'm not saying preferring Mario 64 style games is wrong, I'm just curious about how you all developed that preference.

Reading the interview about New Super Mario Bros. Mii, there doesn't seem to be any implications that it's not a real game.

It's a possibility, but I don't think that that is what this is about.

Nintendo already announced that NSMB Mii is in the making, so why be intentionally vague when saying there is going to be a new Super Mario game at E3 this year for the Wii U.

Also the new Smash game for the Wii U/3DS will complement eachother, but they won't be the same game.

Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year.

So, we know the 3DS is definitely getting a 2D Mario this fiscal year, probably around the holiday times.

The Mario shown at last E3 was a tech demo and not a game

So hopefully this Mario will be brand new that wr've never seen before

Releasing a 2d Mario for launch window for a next gen Nintendo console doesn't make sense

It was a game. The inteview between Iwata and Miyamoto confirmed that.

A new Mario game unveiled with a Nintendo console reveal? Well color me surprised ...

I wonder if this has anything to do with the recently purchased "Super Mario 4" domain.

Hoping for either a new Galaxy-esque game or some completely new take on 3D Mario.
