Thanks, man. So the Mario/Flame Red bundle is a "fixed" model?

It should be semi-impossible to find a red 3DS with that problem, and I would expect that most of the early shipments of blue/black have been sold by now so no worry about those, either.

Will QA for food.
I think you get more automatically if you run out of slots

Yes. As you reach specific numbers of icons on the menu, the total number of spaces will increase. I don't know the limits, or specific numbers, but it happens.

You get more long before you run out, actually.
As long as you have room on your SD card, you'll get more slots.

Neat, I didn't know the SD card had an impact. If you have a larger card, does it give you more spaces?

Only total space.
It won't add more slots just for the heck of it.
You still have to have X number of icons to reach a new limit.

Ah, I see. I'm only at 6 vertical right now max. I need to get to at least 8, so that I can make some sprites with my icons.

That's Japan's implementation. We still need to see how it works in the US and European 3DS.

Yeah, in the Japanese context, it's the first sound of the word. Something like "Zelda" being shortened to "Zel." Hopefully, they'd let us choose an icon of one of the items in the folder to display on the front, though. Picture is worth 1000 words and all that. :)

Edit:
Going by the NoE video, it works the same way for the other regions as well.

Oh. Well, it shows you the full name in the top screen when you click on it, but allowing a picture from one of the apps in it would still be very useful, if they add it later.

Oh thank god, they actually are listening! This is no small feature, my home screen is so cluttered ):

I have to say, why get a guy who can barely speak English to do the NoE feed though?

Because it is nice that someone is charge takes the time to do this. Any old company can hire a bimbo with a mic.

I kind of hope the colour of the folder can be changed. They've only shown blue so far.

-14 DSiWare games (I would have more if I could copy & play them off the damn SD card)

THIS. This really is one of the biggest missing features on the firmware still. There's plenty of DSiWare I might consider if there were an SD menu that worked like the Wii where you choose a game from your SD card and it copies, then plays it. But as it is, I can't even fit all the DSiWare I already have on my 3DS's internal memory, so the only time I even consider a DSiWare purchase is if it's an absolute must-have, and on DSiWare those are few and far between.

Is it possible to run out of slots? I never felt like buying enough things to try.

Upon reaching 100 icons, the menu expands from 120 to 180. I don't remember what the lower milestones are, but I'm thinking it goes from 60 to 120 when you reach 50 or something.

There's not much Nintendo can do about this, I'm afraid. DSiWare games probably access the internal flash in a very low-level way and making them load from SD card would involve making all data-access calls go though a wrapper that does FAT access. Also, the 3DS shuts off several of it's features while running in DSi mode to prevent exploits and the CPU's decryption module, which does the real-time decryption of SD-card 3DS software, is probably among them.

Wouldn't it be possible for the system to reserve a portion of internal memory for a DSiWare app, then when you launch something from the SD menu, it copies the entire game from SD to that internal memory and runs it from there? Then next time you launch that or a different DSiWare app from the SD menu, it would first reencrypt and update the previous title back to the SD card from the temp internal memory slot (to update save data on the SD version) and then clear the temp memory and reload (or if you launched the same app again it would simply update the save back to SD and then launch from the temp store.)

Okay...so what I got from this is to never fully charge or let the charge die.
Fully charging it is okay, but it if you start using it, it would be best to do so for a longer while, so it discharges a bit more. Though, personally, I just put the 3DS on the cradle whenever I'm not using it, and so far I haven't really noticed any degradation of the battery (launch unit).

Maybe that would use up the internal flash's write cycles too quickly.

Finally! In every club nintendo survey I took, I asked for folders!

Was I reading that above correctly? DSi games aren't saved at all to the sd card? Only to the 3ds internal memory? How is that useful?

Wii Folder must be flipping out at this news.

Slowly but surely Nintendo is modernizing their online protocols. I am fairly optimistic about everything they've implemented in the eShop, and more, being available on Wii U within launch window. Patching games is a must for HD gaming.

They can be saved to the SD card for storage purposes and copied back and forth, but they can't be launched from the SD card, presumably for security and anti-piracy reasons. So if you have more DSiWare than can fit on your internal memory, you have to keep some on SD and when you want to use those you have to copy one from internal meory to SD, delete it from internal memory, then copy the one you want to play from SD to internal memory.

I always assumed it was because the DSi games only ran off of internal memory on the DSi and thus weren't optimized to run from an SD card.

Leave it there for hours? overnight? No problems?

Thanks for the previous info and answers.

Yep. It has probably sat there for a couple of days once or twice. I think it just stops charging when full and does its standby things (SpotPass etc.) with power from the power supply, so it doesn't wastefully discharge while it's on the cradle either.

How do you transfer them from internal to sd card?

That's basically how the Wii does it. It could be possible, with two drawbacks: you'd need to add the time it takes to copy the DSiWare from SD card to the boot process (I never did this since I have few DSiWare games, I don't know how long it takes) and it would reduce the lifetime of the internal flash memory (since it would need to be written everytime you play a DSiWare game from SD card).

Another option would be to allow DSiWare games to be moved to/from the SD card directly in the menu. Now that the system can support folders, a differently colored folder could be used to list "archived" DSiWare titles and management could be done by simply moving them from/to it.

Speaking of file management directly from the home screen, Nintendo needs to add a way to delete apps without digging into the settings menu.

In fact it would be stupidly simple to pull off if you think about it. Notice how the bottom task bar disappears when you've gripped an icon? Nintendo could just make a drop bin pop up there instead. As for the built in, non deletable apps, the bin could simply not appear at all when gripping them. There we go Nintendo, the perfect solution. Take it, it's yours.

There's a limit on 300 slots according to the 3DS manual.

300?

Not Bad.

Guess after the folder update it'll be 18,000 then.

Blue folder with one letter? I know it's a miracle that they are even addressing the home screen but, wtf! Let us change the icon to a console or picture of a character.

I hear you. At first i thought: WTF? Nintendo..again? Going the right way and halfass it then?
but i guess it makes more sense in japanese.

let's just pray they add icons later on.

A friend of mine pointed out how silly it will be to have separate folders for GB, GBA, GBC and GG games. That's a lot of "G" folders.
