While I'm not necessarily keen on the rampant DLC nickel-and-diming that comes with an inclusive DLC strategy, I will say that, at the very least, NFC-based add-ons will leave the customer with something a lot more tangible than just invisible data.

Also, considering the Rayman demo showed using both a Rabbid AND an Assassin's Creed Character, do you maybe think that this could be a universal thing? Like all future UBISoft games will have some reaction to an NFC figure? And similarly to other publishers? Like say... scanning a Mario Figure makes all the NPCs in the next Zelda game sport a Mario Mask?

Beat me to the punch. If the Wii Remote + Nunchuck had a couple extra buttons or something it would've been awesome. Split controllers >>>> non-split controllers. WM and Move are so much more comfortable to play with, and pointers >>>> sticks.

I agree with the above, particularly the bit about the split controllers. It's better to have the option of your hands playing in their natural resting positions instead of being locked into one position the whole time. They don't even need to have fewer buttons or sticks or whatnot. Nintendo missed the boat, then Sony really missed the boat by not simply making devices that were essentially conventional controllers (each hand having access to one analog directional, four face buttons which also serve as a digital directional, and two finger buttons), and then they could add features on top of that. Prior to the current one, each generation introduced new controllers which essentially have backwards compatibility to make it easier for existing players to get used to the additions (SNES/Genesis controllers had enough inputs for NES/SMS, Saturn/N64 had enough inputs for SNES/Genesis, GCN had enough inputs for N64 if you use the C-stick in place of C buttons) yet still added something on top.

It's interesting that even though I'd like my hands resting on each arm of my lazychair while I play, I recognize that the DRC is a step in the direction of continuing that habit -- it is capable, with minor caveats, of the inputs of the Gamecube controller, but it adds something in top.

Still, I really wanted that "split-apart" equivalent to the sixth-gen controllers with the IR pointing and speaker and such added in. The past half decade would have been much more fun like that.

This is clearly a possibility, and it would be easily backward compatible.
Let's say a figurine of Robert, the hero of AC 4, is available for the launch of the game, in 2015.

It doesn't exclude the possibility that Ubi will be working on a small additional content linked to this figurine for Rayman Legends launched 3 years before. They just have to create the content, patch the game, and then, when you'll approach Robert to the DRC, tadam, here's your special 10 minutes long level for Rayman, set on AC4 background. A cool incentive to buy the statue, follow the good games of the studio who would be "tied" by these NFC tagged things, etc.

You can even imagine a flood of figurines... with secret combinations of titles + those NFC products.

"Here's Mister Geek, he is single since his wife leave him because he refused to put away from their living room the 1545 collectible figurines that he possess for the Wii U. This is a great opportunity & time added for him to test all of them on the 154 retail & digital softwares he own on the system...

what, what did you found after 156 hours of permutations attempts ? You can unlock a Peach pink dress with yellow ribbons for Michael MacDarts, the bad boy protagonist of a 2016 hyper violent BTA, while putting down its statuette on the padlet !!?? It was totally unexpected !"

This is of course, making me think of Rogue Squadron and their insane ability to hide a Naboo starfighter from the prequels for almost a year and a half, and how they could pull this off now if LucasArts could pull their heads out from their asses.

This also makes me wonder if this isn't a fanboy-generation strategy because this "DLC" requires gamers to go out, buy, and geek out over figurines like they're still in the 80's.

What's that black area on the back of the Wii U controller in the trailer? IR sensor? Camera? It appears off-center...

Edit: Seems I'm late to the party today. Quite the megaton, indeed...

I bought Origins on PS3 & then traded it in, bought it on Vita since it felt like a better portable type of game. I'll be buying Legends on WiiU since it gives me both options -- kind of. I can play it on my TV or lay on the couch, watch some baseball, & still enjoy Rayman goodness.

NFC stuff is a cool idea to see here. I'm not one for figurines, but I'm sure you'll be able to access the content in other ways.

Ubisoft has said that what is shown in this trailer doesn't reflect the final form of the Wii U or its controller. Thus, that black area could be just for development purposes, though it wouldn't worsen the visual appeal of the Wii U Remote should it be there on the retail unit. As for what it is, perhaps an additional scanner for the NFC toys for people that are afraid of scratching the screen of the controller?

Or, it can be for the TV remote like capabilities of the Wii U, which a recent patent spoke of.

Btw, were the Skylanders trophies hacked and can you use the information they hold thus without buying them?

Not sure if they were actually "hacked", but I do know that you could use the figurines in-game without ever removing them from their packaging. Just put them boxed on the scanner, and it worked just fine.

You could finish the entire game with one of the characters, and afterwards simply return the figurine to the store to get a refund.

Geek don't eat macarons, they prefer bacon tasting chips & coca !

And seriously, i would love to find a very secret permutation of a rare NFC product (limited in time Nintendo branded cereals package) + an obscure game not well-known, and it would unlock a super cool Evolved-Mii costume, a feat of strength awarding you coins to purchase things in the Club Nintendo, etc.

At last, some news :)

Just saw the Rayman Legends trailers. Looks great, might buy it!

Lots of NFC talk and I can see why. NFC thing will be bigger than I thought, when Nintendo revealed it in January.
Pokemon is obvious and will happen. BIG miss by Nintendo if it doesn´t happen.
DLC stuff, like new charachters in Super smash brothers will most likely happen.

Also, just read this:
"For the Wii U, we will start the digital download sales of packaged software that I just discussed, so our consumers can choose either the packaged version or the digital download version of the same software from day one of the Wii U’s launch"

So the likelihood of a large harddrive included in Wii U package is pretty big?
Sure it supports usb harddrive, but offering digital versions from launch sounds like we will have a harddrive included... I could be wrong, but that´s how I see it.

Finally this info:
"Please also be advised that, as we did for previous platforms that were launched in the year-end sales season, we will announce the launch date and price in each market sometime after E3."

Does this mean Wii U will be released in Q4? Sure he doesn´t specifically say that, but that´s what I am reading.
Isn´t that a bit late considering the launch line-up we know of so far? Unless it´s beginning of October, than it might work, but November seems late for all those titles to have a chance to do well.

EDIT:
Any other info that I might have missed?

Holy Shit! Someone at Ubisoft's going to die for our sins.

If this is really a first draft or concept video for internal use, i have to wonder about how many people could have gotten their hands on it, and if it wouldn't be rather easy to find the source of the leak...

Ya know what? It'd be awesome...awesome if publishers put out limited edition figurines that automatically come with the DD NFC code for a game. Pretty cool stuff. I know publishers already do stuff like that with collectors tins and whatnot, but somehow the idea seems cooler with the inclusion of NFC. I dunno, maybe I'm just retarded or something and can't see that it's the exact same thing only without a disc.

There's crazy possibilities for merchandise that also includes NFC DD codes for a wide range of different software. Again, all shallow money making ploys, but NFC just makes it all so much more...neat.

I'm guessing the leak originated from the facility they used to edit the video. I used to work at a video post-production house in Hollywood and you wouldn't believe the amount of TV shows and movies that the tape operators copied for their own use. I was given copies of movies like Titanic and Starship Troopers months before they were even in theaters.

A two parts Miyamoto interview from the Guardian

Part 1 Part 2

There's some relevant tidbits here and there, like the confirmation of upcoming new characters:

With this in mind I wonder if Miyamoto has a yearning to create any particular game that he hasn't yet been able to? "I don't have a big list of ideas I want to realise," he replies. "I usually come up with new ideas while I am working on other games. That said, there's a strong possibility we will introduce some new characters to the scene soon."

I'm starting to think this NFC figurine stuff is how the gaming industry will appease retailers as we move away from physical media. They can still sell something tangible even without software, but still be in the gaming business. It's not really something I'm excited about (I'm too old and too busy to care about collectibles), but it's undoubtedly a smart fiscal move for everyone involved.

Edit: It'll also help publishers remain relevant, because developers will need business partners with the money and distribution relationships to produce and ship said figurines.

Am I the only one here who thinks despite all the dismissive Wiimote-style ragging on the Utablet after NextBox and PS4 are out for a few years they'll both pull another Kinect/Move and release their own tablet style peripherals?

You need to edit the free space to read:

"Free Space (BurntPork banned)"

Hehe.

I think they'll both have them for launch, unless Sony can come up with a USP of their own.

Miyamoto said in an interview in 2010 that he's working on an IP that will introduce new characters. He hoped to release it in 2011 because it would've been the 10th anniversary of Pikmin. The game obviously got delayed so maybe we're about to see it soon?

Watch the NA Club Nintendo Platinum Reward figurine from 2010 be one.

Yup. I think that Nintendo, by showing the system's controller early and giving enough heads-up time on this feature, tried to bait MS and Sony into following suit with tablet-style controllers of their own. And I'm curious to see if they took the bait.

Even if they were to copy the uPad idea, Nintendo would still retain the advantage, since they've been thinking of gameplay ideas and uses for the controller for quite a bit longer than the other two.

As a 20 year old male, I can say I'm delighted to hear about figurines.
At 33, I'm mildly pleased. It ain't a world-ender, but it's nice?

Hmm.. that might be a bit cheaper, too. I like.

So I've been gone for the last 24 hours.

What'd I miss? :D

the controller has an ugly mandatory wire now all the time AND it needs batteries to function and also a useless touchscreen has been added to the controller along with nfc functions (think skylanders)

nsmb2 will be available for digital download

sony is ripping off super smash bros. and they're the worst company ever for doing it

game of the year, rayman legends, was shown off in a leaked trailer.

Just out of curiosity, how old is everyone in here. I'm 29 and a big Nintendo Fan (Nintendo + PC for the future, though I have owned all brands of console) and I'm just curious about what the breakdown is in here. I think it's funny that the stereotype is that people who like Nintendo are young but I suspect this thread skews older. I know it's likely a selection effect of the higher level tech talk and the board itself, but age demographics are always interesting.

Saw the Rayman Legends footage. Looks neat. On a different note, I have to ask: is spewing the term "gimmick" some kind of compulsive disorder among gamers?

Anything that doesn't involve standard controller input is a gimmick... especially if it's done by Nintendo. Emphasis on Nintendo.

I'm an old fogey, 38 years here. And I love all game systems including Nintendo systems.

Ubisoft apparently already in trouble with Universal over the trailer music, Nintendo Ninjas aren't their only worries, per Cheesemeister's Twitter feed:

Cheesemeister: @VOOK64 NBC Universal lawyers are gearing up to serve Ubisoft offices as we speak

Cheesemeister: @VOOK64 It's no joke, sadly.

I think it's gonna be a big win for Nintendo. People were lapping up silly stuff like the Mario Kart Wheel and Wii Zapper and those were just bits of plastic. The addition of figurines puts them most likely in a strong position in every toy aisle around America.

If it's done sort of like the new DLC, I'll be very pleased. I picture a $10 figurine of Mario being able unlock new levels, instead of a $10 download. Or if the figurines are priced higher, perhaps some games will recognize existing ones (a 1-up mushroom works across several titles, etc).

A bit gimmicky and makes the system look more like a toy, but probably a huge money winner from a business perspective.

Also I've been gaming since the very tail end of the SNES, but really since the N64.

29, been a nintendo fan since NES, and though I just finished my first self-built PC, been PC gaming pretty much since I learned to read (think marble madness and secret of monkey island in glorious tri-color CGA, and shitty shitty King's Quest 3).

EDIT: Just like steam sales, the prospect of the NFC stuff for Nintendo games does nothing but make my heart skip as my wallet shrinks in fear.
