Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

Ah to be 25...

No thanks. Life started getting good at 30, and it gets better every year. My only regret is that one day, I will find that I have finally reached the peak from which I look down at all other ages.

Are the 720 and PS4 going to have a similar price ceiling or will they be 'allowed' to charge more because they can get away with it?

My ceiling for the Wii U is $250 (or, under somewhat unlikely circumstances $300 and under almost impossible circumstances $350). My ceiling is the same for competing systems, including the ones from this generation. They were too expensive when they seemed new and fun, and they took so long to drop in price that I just lost interest eventually. I do still have lingering interest in getting a PS3, but while it's finally at the edge of my price range, I was really bummed when they cut backwards compatibility. There's a chance that I might get one, though, if the Wii U is outside my price range. I'm interested in a few titles, including the Smach clone.

I'll be 27 in less than a month. First console was a 2600 but my first Nintendo console was a GameCube.
Personally, I love the idea of the Sony Smash game but the roster is horrible. Needs more Legend of Dragoon, Captain Blasto and Tombs. Less shooting dude and fat princess.

Kinda "late to the party here", but how does that NFC stuff works? Do you need special items for it, like Skylanders? Is there some barcode that is being scanned or so on the item? And what is doing the scanning, a camera?

Only 6 characters have been shown. I'm guessing it will be at least 30 in total :)

I kinda wish they would release a wired controller for Wii U. It would probably help with the streaming/reducing input lag.

The 360 controller can be wired. The PS3 Dualshock controller can be wired. Every iOS device can be wired. And I'm pretty sure that you will get a wire for the uPad.

I'm 40.

Started out with Pong, the Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, Vectrex, Odyssey2...man those were the days....

I'll always be a Nintendo fanboy though. :)

You can scan trading cards, action figures, credit cards, etc.

Not sure if it uses bar codes though.

Hey look 2K Sports is working on Wii U software

Yep, we got that at #13030. ;)

I think it's like those magical EZ-passes you need when you pay tolls on roads nowadays. A little transponder is in the object, and the reader picks up its unique ID.

edit: for fairness, Ace actually beat me to this, but I was too lazy to click the reply button and edited inline instead. :D

It's a micro chip that they place in an item. Can be anything. The controller can communicate with the chip and read info off it. No scanning or camera. All wireless.

You know what could be awesome? NFC keys for user accounts. To log into your account on any Wii U, simply pull out your key and put it on the pad for a second. Could also be used for in store digital purchases: Buy a DD game at Walmart or Gamestop, and instead of getting a 16 digit number, you log into a terminal with your key and the title will be directly added to your account and already downloads on your machine at home while you're still shopping.

Sounds like an evolution of the key passes they use for MMOs. I'd be down for that.

This is a really interesting analysis. I hadn't really thought about using labeling theory to approach this issue but it makes sense. One aspect that really makes the labeling theory stuff work is that Nintendo tends to go along with these labels to some degree once they become secondary deviance. Their attempt at dealing with the "kiddie" claims was to say they were fit for all ages (I know that is actually true, but I'm talking in terms of public perception) which wasn't a strong denial of that original idea. This was especially true during the GCN era.

Then when they were called casual they took it and ran with the touch generations line. They never really took ownership of their label all the way, but they also didn't really fight that hard to get rid of them. They used the labels when it was a benefit.

Interestingly Nintendo made a profit in each of these scenarios, yet they were were not considered "cool" in the zeitgeist of gamer culture.

By the way, to answer your question without another dissertation. I'm 28, a man, and I need to shave, because my beard itches like crazy.

If you want something interesting, go look on the Nintendo Channel on the Wii, and go find some game listing that includes the Recommendation feedback. You can change the male/female filters on it, and one thing you'll notice is female gamers tend to think any game they like is more casual than male gamers. Regardless of the game, Metroid, Zelda, Castlevania NES, Kirby, Call of Duty (!!), female gamers will find it more casual than male gamers. Why is this? Perhaps because the "casual" label was definitely linked with female gamers and marketing strategies aimed at them and as such, they will think any game they like is casual. Even a game like Monster Hunter.

Exactly. I haven't used my wireless 360 controller in YEARS. Much prefer wired.

Google my brother! Hehe, not all too sure myself, but it's a radio technology so it's a chip and not the camera (the other device, like the figurines, will of course also need an NFC chip).
In Europe NFC should be implemented into paycards and cell phones (German government even wants it in IDs) so it should also be possible to pay easily on Wii U.

Also the stuff that got mentioned like buying game-cards at stores and just scanning them or just touching game cases to register games, but we're slowly approaching fantasy land there, no info on that yet.

TL:DR Get Hype!

Nintendo should hire NeoGAF to design the console features, dammit want.

tbh I can see wires as a solution to multi Wii U controllers on the same system tho

After the Rayman news, is it safe to say that Ideaman should not be doubted anymore?

I hate to be that guy, but come on now. Legends was leaked with pics that same day. It doesn't take insider knowledge to figure out it is coming to Wii U considering the first is for every single gaming platform available and it is Ubisoft.

That's like me saying "hey guys I heard Madden is coming to Wii-U". Now if he predicted an exclusive or even said "hey GTA 5/Sleeping Dog/Crysis 3/etc. is coming to Wii-U!" and it actually did, then we could say he mostly likely knows what he is talking about.

Hell even if he predicted a feature like movable platforms through touch-screen or NFC support I would most likely buy in.

They're already on it... Seems they're going to use mobile phones (at least) for login/payment.

I mentioned the NFC (Near Field Communication) function for the Wii U (in my presentation today). In Japan FeliCa-based e-money is used the most, but the NFC standard compatible with FeliCa has been very popular. If we can provide a system in which consumers can use such e-money, they will far more easily be able to make payments than by entering credit card numbers or purchasing the Nintendo Prepaid Cards at stores.

...

build a solid system in which consumers will make payments at their will and with a minimal amount of effort.

You can even implant a nfc chip into your body (tattoo parlors do that) and program it, apparently there are some places like bars (in the netherlands or smth?) where you can identify yourself and pay through that. It's the new bluetooth.

Just out of curiosity, how old is everyone in here. I'm 29 and a big Nintendo Fan (Nintendo + PC for the future, though I have owned all brands of console) and I'm just curious about what the breakdown is in here. I think it's funny that the stereotype is that people who like Nintendo are young but I suspect this thread skews older. I know it's likely a selection effect of the higher level tech talk and the board itself, but age demographics are always interesting.

In the UK, banks are giving out stickers with your NFC chip on them for payments up to £20 with no authentication required (so, would cover all digital download games, but not 'package software' at retail price).

I'm sticking mine on a ring, and fist-bumping all my payments :D

^ Haha that's awesome. NFC is really a nice technology, if only I fear it makes buying stuff too easy so you end up buying a bunch of useless shit. *looks at steam game list* Damn you Gaben.

Mark of the beast...

Wii U will come with a voucher to get an implant of your choice, an army of Triforced people will roam the streets and bring upon us the rapture, opening the door to the golden land.

The 360 launched in the U.S. at $299 and $399. The extra $100 was for a 20 GB hard drive, a wireless controller, a remote controller, and component/ethernet cables. Neither package had Wi-Fi.

Admittedly, I guessed on the price of the 360 so I was off by $50 on each model but the $100 for Wi-Fi was referring to the adapter you could buy for it, which was the only way to play wirelessly until they launched the new model in 2010.

I'm 28 and my first console was a Spectrum when I was 6 then a NES a year later. Fucking snowballed after that, I've had every console/handheld worth owning since.

Next on the list is Wii U baby.

So good to actually see a game on Wii U atlast, Rayman is looking tasty. Pretty funny really because I came home with a copy of Origins to see the new leaked trailer for the next game.

Yeah, i've heard of this, RFID chips. Saw it in the news (i think?) a while ago about the usage in some bars for VIP customers :) It is often used on animals i think for easy and quick recognition.

Guessing from the trailer, maybe if you preorder ACIII you'll get a figurine that unlocks content via NFC in Rayman Legends?

Completely OT : Seeing this pic...What a memorable game, this was.

R.I.P CiNG

Adventure games (and RTS, even though they weren't gone so hard) need to make a huge comeback. Touch devices were made for them.
Another Code is glaring at me right now, yes I'll play you sorry sorry.

Working on an age demographic chart yet, Gameplay? :p

We're getting secretly target demographied people, quick everybody state your favorite games! I want a Monster Hunter game where you hunt Pokemon Nintendo!

36, started with Spectravideo SVI328, then C64, Amiga 500, a tiny bit of PC, and finally SNES in the early 90's. I actually got the NES much later, a few years after the launch of PS1, mainly because I hated that everything dropped down to 30fps (or rather 25 in europe) and finally got to play 8-bit Zelda and Mario games for the first time.

Can NFC be used with multiple items at the same time or in rapid-fire succession (i.e. 10 per second)? If so, there's no doubt that the line of Lego games could massively benefit from this. Just think: when you buy a Lego game, you also get a set of Legos with each Lego piece using a specific NFC code. That way, if you're playing the game and need to climb into a second story window, you won't have to "find" a ladder. You can just build one out of your Legos and then scan it in! This could apply for any number of in-game puzzles. What do you need? A bridge? A weapon? A vehicle!

I can imagine it being somewhat like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts except that, instead of creating the vehicle in the video game, you make it out of Legos and then scan it in. Obviously, the Wii U knowing the orientation and position of each piece would be difficult (if not impossible), but maybe???! Nintendo appears to be involved somewhat on Lego City Stories. If anyone can dream up and then execute this, it would be them.

Ninthings? Really?

Isn't that the current denigratory term for us? I thought I heard it mentioned several times in this thread and elsewhere on GAF.

Also it's funny that UbiSoft's Wii reveal was full of imagery not possible on the Wii, whereas now they leak footage that is very conservative.

It still looks pretty great, though. I like that part where there's a zillion weird ball-ish enemies on screen that you have to deal with using fireworks (right after the "Epic Rendering Engine" text). That looked really fun.

----

Okay, another entry for the IdeaMan Challenge. The previous list is here.

Spy Assassin: A stealth/action game not entirely unlikely like MGS (let's face it, Koji's not gonna bring it to the platform anyway). One of your primary tools is a mobile, hovering spycam. It works not unlike the one in (I think it was) Perfect Dark, except that the camera view is on the DRC while your normal player view is retained on the TV screen (eliminating a pretty major problem with that type of item). If the accelerometers are involved, then you could even continue to use the normal controls for your character on the TV (thus being able to continue evading enemies) while simple tilting can control the forward/backward and left/right rotation of the spycam). That sort of control pretty much defines "hardcore" in the classic sense, so it will have slightly limited audience potential, but I think it could be a fun enough addition for many gamers.

Working on an age demographic chart yet, Gameplay? :p

Hah, that sounds like work. Most of my charts involve my little Pikmin doing all the grunty stuff for me.

When you're a kid, things that make you feel like an adult give you pleasure (M-rated titles, etc). When you're an adult, things that make you feel like a kid give you pleasure (Mario, Zelda, etc).

Nintendo's not really "kiddy" in my mind. Gratuitous violence is a novelty that has its place for me (I love horror movies), but it's more impressive to the early-teenagers who feel like they're getting away with something by seeing it (like sneaking into an R-rated movie).

I'm 32 by the way. And I think Nintendo does have an older fan base than others would expect, due to the nostalgia of their key franchises.

Guessing from the trailer, maybe if you preorder ACIII you'll get a figurine that unlocks content via NFC in Rayman Legends?

It's interesting -- I've sort of been a strong proponent of the idea of making it so that accomplishments in game X will unlock features in game Y (instead of contributing to a "gamer score", which has some negative aspects to it and isn't, imho, quite as cool as being rewarded by actual unlockables). This is kind of similar in that it involves ownership of multiple games affecting your play in one or the other.

I'm 18. I think I'm the youngest...

I think there's a 14 year old among N-GAF.

I'm 32 and started with an NES back in 1986. The only non-Nintendo console (including handhelds) I've ever owned is an Xbox 360, and on that I've only played Braid. I also play games on the PC.

I dropped out of gaming at the end of the N64 era and rejoined with the Wii.

I consider myself a dedicated gamer (i.e., not "casual") because I enjoy a pretty wide variety of game types and (obviously, being a NeoGAF member) enjoy keeping up to date on gaming news for all consoles (not just Nintendo), even though I have no personal interest in playing what's available on 360/PS3.

E3 is going to really be make it or break it, so I'm excited to see how all this shapes up. Nintendo really needs to have a solid conference.
