Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

And yet, similar posts about Nintendo are just fine. :/

I think that the point was that there was already a separate "bitch about the new 'Sony Smach 2' here" thread that the mods made so that the regular thread would be free of hate. If there were a "Miyamoto Love Doll" thread and a separate "I HATE Miyamoto lovin'!" thread, it would be understandable to see bannings of people who hate on simulated Miyamoto sex* in the former thread (but not the latter thread).

* Why would you hate such a wonderful thing!!?!

Is this old? Article posted today. I'll post it anyways for anyone who missed it.

Miyamoto interview:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2012/apr/26/shigeru-miyamotos-game-over-nintendo

Miyamoto on not playing games if he didn't make them...

"It could be that … I might not be playing games."

Miyamoto on a typical day...

"My days all follow much the same pattern. They are structured and typical. Roughly half of my time I spend checking new games that Nintendo's directors are working on. I sit at my desk, play their games and create checklists of comments and amends that I then send out to the directors. Then, the rest of my time is spent attending various meetings, talking about management decisions for the general business direction of Nintendo."

Miyamoto on having more free time...

"...the decreased workload allows me to do new projects like the audio guide. But I am still very close to the game development. Although I am not a director myself I do check all of our games and discuss them over email. I visit Nintendo's Tokyo EAD team every few weeks too, so I don't really feel detached from the game side of the business."

Miyamoto on not retiring, but giving new people chances to create...

"There have been numerous media reports that I am about to retire and I very much want to emphasise that this is not the case. I believe that if I remain in the same position as a leader of the development teams within Nintendo, then the entire structure will grow or revolve around me,. I've certainly seen there are other people within EAD that have the potential to be leaders. I wanted to give these people a chance to lead their respective teams. When I said in the press that I would step back a little I was just saying I want to support the company from the side, rather than being front and centre all of the time."

Miyamoto on Nintendo hiring artists and programmers, not designers...

"We don't usually hire game designers. We almost exclusively hire artists or programmers; people who have learnt a technique and have a basis that we start with. Recently we have hired a few game designers, but generally they have already had careers in other companies and then joined us. But we hire a lot of people out of university. They bring basic knowledge and we start from there. Obviously people from artist or programmer backgrounds have to work together soon enough. So I think there are two key characteristics: a positive attitude towards new things, and someone who doesn't easily give up in the face of problems or criticism. That's what I look for in a new hire."

Miyamoto on the 3DS launch, what he would change and 3D tech in general...

"Especially for the first six months following the system's release, sales were weaker than the DS. This was mainly due to the fact we didn't have any big first party titles, I believe. Also the price point was too high.

In fairness to us, we realised that, reduced the price and worked very hard to have a strong lineup for the Christmas season, which we offered with Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 and Kid Icarus.

Looking at the situation in Japan today, the console is selling very well. We have now sold 5m consoles there, which is respectable for a console in its first year. The challenge now is to continue to put effort into making the 3DS more widely known. The Louvre guide is another way of doing that.

If I could rewind the clock I would change the lineup for the 3DS launch so it had more Mario titles. Not only that, but we also have some excellent features that appeal to non-gamers: 3D photography, the augmented reality features and other preinstalled apps. We tried hard to communicate these, but we failed. If I could go back I would have communicated these things differently, and spent more time working out that message.

3D is really the most normal thing because it's how those of us with two eyes usually see the world. TVs are the unusual things in 2D! We don't look at stereoscopic as a gimmick. It's rather the most normal way to display things."

Miyamoto on reaching out to new gamers and opening development tools for more to use...

"There are big lines between those who play video games and those who do not. For those who don't, video games are irrelevant. They think all video games must be too difficult. We want to remove that barrier.

Obviously that would mean making development tools more easily available. Maybe we should look into it but any tools we offer would need to be supported. From my perspective, we want to reach out to smaller studios and work on smaller projects while supporting them as an easier and faster way to get smaller studios involved. That would be the best way to go.

Obviously a lot of the potential of handheld game systems can now be covered by smartphones. When we think about new hardware we need to think about what things we can add that you can't currently do with a smartphone. For us, we would need to have a good reason to launch a new hardware – something necessary."

Miyamoto on keeping franchises alive, teases new characters, and surprising people...

"We need to continue releasing new games in existing franchises otherwise those franchises might die. That's not to say that we aren't interested in new games. It's just a case of picking a new game idea. When we have the opportunity we want to create new things in the future, certainly.

I don't have a big list of ideas I want to realise. I usually come up with new ideas while I am working on other games. That said, there's a strong possibility we will introduce some new characters to the scene soon.

The key thing is surprising people. Video game development is actually a very easy tool to use to surprise people and to offer new, unexpected things to players. It can actually be done quite easily. It doesn't take a lot to do this. There are exceptions but games can be created quite easily. I love that.

In the past it was just, you touch a button and something happens on screen and this was surprising enough to people! Like magic. Nowadays we have experienced players and players with no experience and we must accommodate the needs of both groups. It's becoming increasingly difficult. "

Miyamoto on his favorite creation, perfecting franchises, and having less input on the Zelda series...

"Looking back, Donkey Kong is close to me because it was the first game I made where I realised I could actually make a living from this. Then the title that made games known worldwide was Super Mario Bros. so that's incredibly important to me. But this is a very generic answer and maybe doesn't help you too much. Actually, a big innovation was Wii Sports. With this game we kicked off an adventure into something new. I want to be able to do this bold step many times in my life.

It's an excellent point because my desire is always to attempt to perfect my games. I think the Zelda series… I am not so deeply involved any more compared to the past, but Skyward Sword is a very complete and exceptionally well-polished title."

On not having time to play games...

"I think it's the lack of time in general. And maybe I don't see so many titles that I find fascinating enough that I want to spend time playing. Time is precious and a game has to be worthwhile, right? Another problem is that there are so many games on the market today that it's difficult to find the right one. In many ways I think I am in a similar place to the average game player. This is one of the greatest challenges for the industry right now."

Miyamoto on the future of the game industry...

"I am not that concerned, actually. Nintendo and I have always hoped that games would someday become a more accepted part of our daily life. Every month this becomes closer to the reality we live in. Games have grown and developed from this limited in-the-box experience to something that's everywhere now. Interactive content is all around us, networked, ready. This is something I've been hoping for throughout my career. With this success comes a new challenge of course: how do we make our titles relevant in this world of games. How do we keep going when everything has changed? It's a huge challenge. But it's a good one. It's what we always wanted."

I understand, but it's just that, in my mind, the constant hit and runs in this thread fall into a similar category.

But don't mind me. I've always been critical of moderation policies. Sorry if you took any offense to my comment. Thinking about it, it actually was very wrong and just me being pissed about hit and runs. :/

Oh and uh I'm 20.

Turned 41 2 days ago. Been gaming since late 70's. Nintendo consoles are generally my first console of a generation due to Zelda and later Metroid. With any luck I will be a ninte do only gamer next gen if they get good third party support. I can't afford a second console and stopped PC gaming years ago apart from the odd 5 minute blast on a Steam sale game.

29. I grew up with Nintendo consoles and then slowly moved over to PS systems since that's where all the third party devs went. But I still bought Nintendo consoles due wanting to keep up with the series that I grew up playing. I'm starting to drift back toward Nintendo (i've largely only played my 3DS and Wii this year) due to becoming more and more annoyed with Sony's disinterest in making/securing Japanese titles. While Nintendo really seems to be making a push to gain a lot of backing from Japanese studios. I continue to get the feeling that the Wii U is going to be a lot like the 3DS when it comes to really solid Japanese dev support. Which would mean that it'll be my main system next gen.

Posts are always missed. And everybody always notes those ones, not the ones that were caught. No offence was taken, but given that I know who gets banned and why, I can assure you that field is level. A smart poster, regardless of criticism to moderation policy, will still post within established rules and not post dumb shit because "such and such got away with it". Which, I feel, is what happens all too often.

In the case of radioheadrule83, he was banned for the obvious reasons: he entered a Sony specific thread about a Sony specific game, where Sony fans were posting, and replied with a post with a majority composition of "I hate Sony and I hope they keep failing PS lots of shit Sony fans that post on NeoGAF are the reason I hate Sony. Oh, but this game will be good for Sony fans".

It contributes nothing to discussion, has little to do with the topic at hand, and is definitively console warring nonsense dribble. EatChildren's thumb rule for posting: if the primary agenda and bulk of your post is to reiterate how much you hate a company and/or their fanbase, in a topic that in no way way evokes such discussion, then don't post.

Regardless, radioheadrule83 will be back soon.

Sad to see radioheadrule get banned like that. He's one of my favorite posters too. :(

I'm 22 turning 23 this year. I own all Nintendo home consoles and have been a huge fan forever. I hate the Wii though.

So do you think Smash Bros is going to incorporate some of the NFC stuff? Items? Extra characters?

I'm 36 by the way. Strangely for this thread though - my first Nintendo product was a Game Boy Advance.

I'm 36, and I've been banned once or twice (and tagged) for hating on Sony.

I still don't like them. I think they and Microsoft epitomize the evil corporation. Gates himself isn't so bad now that he isn't running the business anymore though.

I'm going to stop now

why would anyone go and post in Sony's Smash Bros thread knowing your own bias? SMH
we should know this is the natural time that crazy fans get all heated up over stupid shit.

I feel spoiled today I need another good leak next week :)

Are you kidding? After all those on-screen tropies of characters that are the mainstay of the series? It'll be a huge part of the game in some way.

I am appreciating EatChildren's transparency.

Same here. It's one of the things that I liked about the SA forums. When people were banned or put on probation (can't post), an entry was made into a public list as to why they were banned as well as a link to the post that was part of that. Too bad I don't really like that forum itself.

If you've never played a Smash Bros. game, the big thing behind the series is basically action figures coming to life and fighting it out. You aren't controlling Mario, you're controlling a Mario action figure. It's like the game was designed specifically with NFC in mind.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Glad to see so many young people in this thread.

I've never played one before (not really a fighting game fan), but I guessed this was the case and it would be a good fit for NFC.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
I see Nintendo using cards again like Kid Icarus is they decide to go that route with Smash Bros. Historically it would make sense for a Nintendo Brawler to make reference to cards even if pre-gaming Nintendo is more Wario Ware's domain.

And since ages are being shared; 24.

Working on an age demographic chart yet, Gameplay? :p

Okay, fine, but you're not gonna like it…

(accurate as of post#14377)

As you can see, this age breakdown proves
NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! THERE IS NO SPECIFIC AGE GROUP THAT NINTENDO CATERS TOWARDS. THEY WANT TO SELL PRODUCT TO EVERYBODY WITH A HEARTBEAT
.

Truly, we are now all the wiser.

Oh, and to contribute to discussion outside of BanZ(tm), I'm 24 (I think?) turning 25 in June. Some of my first gaming was on a NES, though my first personally owned system was an Atari, followed by a SNES. One of the first games I ever played was Punch-Out!!.

Since then, I've owned every Nintendo console, and all Nintendo handhelds sans the GameBoy Colour, and hardware iterations.

As I've stated in this thread and others, I'm attracted to Nintendo's platforms as, at their best, I consider Nintendo one of the most creative and exceptionally talented production houses in the industry. I do 'most' of my gaming on PC, thus platforms like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are less attractive, given the bulk of their best titles are also on PC, which always takes first priority. Nintendo however, with their library of exclusive IPs I'm hugely attracted to (Metroid, Mario, and F-Zero specifically), means I'm always guaranteed a platform with a solid library of enjoyable titles. Nintendo console + PC is and probably always will be, pending Nintendo insanity (the bad kind), my gaming platform duo of choice. I do also own a PS3 though, to fill the void of titles I cannot get on either, and the three together is more than satisfying.

In terms of library rank, the SNES is certainly a stand out, though that was a different era. My memories of the N64 are exceptionally good, both because of childish nostalgia, and also because I feel that generation represented an important era of game design, where designers were heavily experimenting with 3D environments. We ended up with lots of unoptimised clumsy shit, but a lot of that shit was very creative, and I gravitate towards those kinds of games over 'safe' titles. The GCN has some of the biggest highs I've seen from a Nintendo platform, but also some of the worst lows. I think, at it's best, the GCN is the best, as it's hard to go past the likes of Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4. But I also feel that the GCN's library, as a whole, was seriously lacking. It felt very empty, with most really cool experimental stuff gravitating towards the PlayStation 2, which was the better platform for 'more' niche games. The Wii, on the other hand, is a system I utterly adore. It reminds me a little of the N64, in that it has tons of games that are unpolished, unoptimised, clumsy, and in some cases downright horrible at times, but many of these games are unique, creative and interesting enough for me to play through. I'm a pro-motion control and very pro-IR kinda guy, and I think the split controller design of the Wii Remote (with IR) + Nunchuck is the best thing to come out of game controllers since the analogue stick. Nintendo's offerings on the Wii have been tremendous, and this generation they've delivered some of their best work of all time. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the best 3D platformer ever made.

But, my relationship with Nintendo is, as I've also put before, akin to an abusive ex girlfriend where the sex is fantastic. Nintendo often treats me like shit, has dumb fucking ideas, and we butt head frequently. But goddamn is the gaming too good to pass off. Nintendo's (seemingly) reluctance to online has always been, in my eyes, a massive mistake. They always seem to take one step back for every step forward. Their over controlling, babying of their audience is detrimental to both the market and the industry. I wish Nintendo were more open, more experimental, and more accepting of outside influence in the realm of digital networks and online. The Wii U has much to prove in this realm regardless of how good Nintendo's promises sound on paper, because they still screw up with the 3DS. EG: Mario Kart 7 community channel feature? Fantastic. eShop? Still a fucking disaster of design. Overpriced and bad regional management. Their treatment of indy devs on their e-services is disgusting and I cannot blame any developer who doesn't want to work with them.

So, as you can see, for every one thing I love about Nintendo and their games, there's another thing I hate. They're not in the realm of someone like, say, Valve, where for everything I don't like there's a hundred things I love, and even what I don't like is rarely a big deal. Nintendo has problems. Lots of them. And that saddens me.

But, and for the third time "like I've said before", I will buy the Wii U. Probably at launch. And I will enjoy it. Because the sex with Nintendo is too good.

I've been playing only on Nintendo consoles since the age of 5. I will be turning 27 years old in July. My cousin gave my brother and I a NES with Super Mario Brothers + Duck Hunt for our birthday. For our 9th birthday, our parents bought us a SNES with Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

27, started with a Commodore 64 (God i loved that thing), got a gameboy at the age of 7 i belive. Got a N64 as my first home console after annoying my parents for month in 98.

On the topic with Sony and Microsoft.

I am a BIG Nintendo fan, but i can appreciate and accept the other two on the market. But i really do hate blatand copy of things. So i get a little annoyed with stuff like the all star game. It seriusly looks like they copied the whole game.

On the other hand, i think its kind of very annoying that people come im here randomly, shit on everything and leave. Hit and run with no consequence.

I don´t even know when the newest Nickname for us, Nintendo fans, came to live. I talk about the "Ninthings" name.

I always name the fans of the other manufacturer "fans" and don´t feel the need to give them a stupid and insulting name.

You know what could be awesome? NFC keys for user accounts. To log into your account on any Wii U, simply pull out your key and put it on the pad for a second. Could also be used for in store digital purchases: Buy a DD game at Walmart or Gamestop, and instead of getting a 16 digit number, you log into a terminal with your key and the title will be directly added to your account and already downloads on your machine at home while you're still shopping.

You, I think, are fishing for "I wonder how I can disguise for what I already know".
As somone who's company works with NFC tags and readers regularly, this would make extreme levels of sense. So would registering the games you bought to your console so that you can no longer resell them, like on the other 2 consoles releasing in 2013.

The more I read posts like these, the more I'm convinced: You *are* another me. This statement is what makes the defaut Wii U dual-analog tablet so... infuriating for me. In so many ways.

So. Experts, enthusiasts and specialguy:

What are the chances that the Ubisoft video is indeed a internal/old one?

100%

Oh, and I'm 103 years old.

This would be great, especially if my key could be a little Samus figure.

I'm 24, I own every major Nintendo console/portable including the Virtual Boy. I don't have as much time to game as I use to so I stick with older consoles and anything Nintendo.

I have a tendency to lurk a lot, especially in threads like these. It's been a helluva ride and E3 can't come sooner. I have that time period completely off so it should be amazing!

EDIT: Big question, has anyone started to save up to buy the Wii U at launch? I'm putting away about $50 a month up until launch. That's going to give me a solid $350 at the start of November. And I figure there may be some extra money I might throw in here and there to "pad" some expenses of launch.

Haven't seen this posted in this thread, but there is a topic about Crytek claiming TS4 isn't in development. And on www.go********.com (hehehe) there is a topic about CARS. Seems switching from TV to uPad is indeed up to developers as thought. Edit: "primary input method, drive by tilting the controller, onscreen buttons replicate the buttons/switches on a real wheel"
