Awkward Scenes in Videogames That Made You Cringe

Ar tonelico 3

I was streaming when I got to this part and my friend over skype couldn't believe what he was seeing/hearing. I highlighted the part, titling it "This game should never have been made"

lol what a series evolution.

I can't remember why I stuck through Ar Tonelico. There's no looking past the awkward fanservice.

He probably did have the best VA out of all of them.
Tibarn was just awful, not a fit for him at all. Zelgius was pretty bad, too.
Skrimir and Ranulf were... passable.

It wasn't very good yeah. I think the one that actually made me cringe was near the end where the kid in the flashback had the same voice as when he was a full-grown adult.

Haha, wow. Was it Ike? I don't remember what he even sounded like in that scene, but that's pretty bad. I guess Ike is so badass that he hit puberty at 6.

1. Haruka/Saejima - Yakuza 4
Haruka (age 12 in Yakuza 4) is going to tell Kiryu that Saejima is awake after washing ashore, he grabs her to stop her as Kiryu was going to ask the police for help. He lands ontop of her with his leg between her legs just looking down at her with the clear look of wanting to rape the girl. The scene just stays on FAAAAAAR too long and becomes awkward for both her and you the player. When the scene is over you might be sitting there thinking....did that just happen?!

This one is very different to the rest of what has been posted in this thread, the intent of this scene is to make you uncomfortable, it fits with the story of the game. I don't think that really fits along side final fantasy XIII "Mom's are tough". Or some shower scene from Mass Effect.

The God of War sex scenes, and a good deal of the gratuitous violence, and Kratos as a character in general(and his incredible/terrible VA) makes me embarrassed for the industry. The fact that the games are generally so good otherwise is the worst part, because it suggests that our biggest talents have the mindsets of 14-year-olds. Which, hell, might be true. Similarly, the way that games like The Witcher and The Witcher 2 treat sex and their female characters is so embarrassing specifically because those are supposed to be the good ones. This is seriously the best we can do?

Bayonetta is something to be proud of, it's one of the world's best examples of flamboyant Japanese surrealism, gaming or otherwise.

Agreed, it was intentionally staged that way, whereas the rest of this thread seems geared towards examples of bad execution.

It was a slightly unnerving scene though.

This thread! I now want to play SO4, even as a morbid curiosity, I hate myself for even entertaining the idea.

sharla's bouncing tits are pretty OTT in Xenoblade, but Vanea's bounced enough for my girlfriend to take the piss out of me every time I played it since she first noticed

goddamnit

Exploitation can be fun too, ya puritian! So many of my female friends LOVE Mortal Kombat 9 including its wildly-sexualized female characters (including my uber-feminist friend; she thinks it's fucking hilarious). You can be a mature adult and enjoy blood soaked titties and Kung Lao rippin up coozes with his hat, it's okay.

but yes yes videogames are serious business

The one in GOW3 where you first meet the goddess of love or something.

What I liked about the older GOW games, was that the sex mini games were completely optional. In this installment however, it was not.

Ar Tornelico games, Other M, and GoW post-1. Point yourself in different bad directions, hit the lever, and break off the handle.

Most recently, any scene in Tales of Graces F involving the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP (so 2/3 of all scenes)

sub-Barney and Friends grade morality without exaggeration

Less awkward, more frustrating.

"WTF WHY THE FUCK AINT YOU TALKING ABOUT
RICHARD TURNING INTO SOME KIND OF DARK GOD OR WHY SOPHIE RESURRECTED OR ANYTHING ELSE A NORMAL PERSON WOULD SAY HERE JESUS H. CHRIST
.

Heh I noticed something like this while going through RE4 again. Ashley grunts and groans like some japanese girl doing porn and it's incredibly awkward to listen to. I have to constantly mute the TV so no one gets the wrong idea.

Also staying on RE4 here. There's a few times in the game when someone dies and Leon does the super cliche scream the person's name really loud and dramatic thing.

Actually pretty much all of the dialogue in that game is terribly done. "Writhe in my cage of torment my friend"....*cringe*

But don't you see, that's what makes the game so damn wonderful. It's hilariously campy! (as long as you find campiness funny, I guess.)

Bayonetta was awkward to play, especially with my fiancee (and she plays 'hardcore' games as much, if not more than I do), but I've learned to accept its absurdity as (mostly) self-aware theatricality.

Any cut-scenes from Xenoblade running on my HDTV. Not because they're badly made, but because it looks like a Dreamcast game.

Just going to say half the scenes in this thread aren't that cringe worthy, what really is cringe worthy though? How about almost every scene in a movie/television show about video games. Some of that stuff has made me feel ashamed to game.

Really? They're rendered in real-time, so they look just like the rest of the game.

They look unbelievable in 1080p emulated through Dolphin.

snow: WE'RE GONNA SAVE WHATEVER WE GOTTA SAVE RIGHT GUYS?? SSSAAAAAVE

hope: oh god i can't do this OH GOD... yet somehow i'm like the most powerful character.

vanille: lalalalalalaalaaa hey look a ten-foot bloodthirsty monster oh that's nice lalalaaa

fang: i'm a respectable character, but i'll take a back seat because honestly i'm just trying to score with vanille

black dude whose name i forget: yeah i'm pretty cool but i'm a joke character. welp, maybe next token

lightning: i hate everything. i hate life. i hate the game i'm in. irritated one-liner. *lightning walks away, which is how 50% of the cutscenes end*

that was awful... ugh.

Bayonetta dance scene that felt like it went on for an hour. I was praying nobody would walk into my room.

Where you see awkwardness, I just see a whole heap of awesome! It was completely in line with the rest of the game, and especially when you consider the finale, that dance sequence looks downright pedestrian in comparison.

Maybe this has been mentioned, but playing through Peace Walker again has reminded me of this scene:

Kojima is God

It's just so indulgent, and it highlights the character of Cecil who is equally as superfluous. Her inclusion essentially boils down to a reference to a real life acquaintance of Kojima, and its one of the rare occasions when I can't fully get on board with Kojima's self-referential nature.

Currently configuring the emulator so that it works as well as possible. I can't deal with Xenoblade on my HDTV. But that's for another thread. Dolphin is amazing.

The romance scene in FFX, about halfway through that scene I left to make a sandwich as an excuse to escape. Awkward faces and the music did me in. Also anything involving Team Nora in FFXIII makes me cringe so bad.
