Are you strong enough to stop supporting a company that acts AGAINST customers?

Rock Band iOS thread made me think about this.

Do you consider yourself to be capable of doing this even if said company continues to put out games that you love?

by acting against the customer i mean anything that could bother you: online pass, on-disc DLC, bad pricing, shoddy port, etc.

The whole Origin thing was kind of a turning point for me on this and ive been basically not supporting EA's efforts on PC beyond friends gifting me BF3.

This however changed with the release of Mass Effect 3, wich i got on the cheap but im still playing and (so far, yeahyeah) enjoying. I can say the same about cacpcom and their PC efforts (pricing, lack of deals, lack of support on my region, GFWL etc), but my stance is not as strong as to refuse to get any future Capcom product on PC in a given opportunity.

Do you think you're capable of doing something like this? have you? why?

I buy games that I want. I'll be honest, I'm not that hard to upset. I guess I'm 'understanding' because I've never enjoyed a dlc that I really bought, so I'm not bothered about it not being in the game or whatever. Always on DRM sucks, but I don't play multiplayer much. I'm sure Diablo 3 will test my patience on that.

I could if I felt jilted though. I don't buy Capcom games anymore, but I'm still buying Dragon's Dogma because the little dlc they've shown so far hasn't made me go WHAT THE FUCK unlike SFxT.

Instead, I'm just more trusting in companies who treat me well like Witcher 2. I bought a copy of the 360 version for a friend because of their efforts for GOG.

Gamefly has been great for me here. Rent what I want to play and buy what I want to play and support.

I've been doing it against Capcom now, because of...well, everything. I did buy the DMC HD collection, but that was going to be free of their grimy touch and I'd still like to show that I support DMC, not DmC. Nobody else by name specifically got me to to that point, but I've just rented a lot of games due to online passes, significant preorder DLC, stuff like that.

I normally don't buy poor ports, but if a game grabs my attention then I'll buy it. I don't care which company made it, besides, why should I punish DICE for whatever EA does? I like their games, I'll support them.

Yes, easily.

I still haven't played/purchased Arkham City because of the Catwoman DLC fiasco. To hold a portion of a single-player game hostage is ludicrous. Especially when it was touted as a key point of the game, then at the last minute they remove the content.

They have one chance to redeem themselves with the GOTY edition, but if the Arkham Asylum GOTY taught me anything, it is that not everything will actually be on the disc.

Also, I don't buy EA or Capcom games.

Usually a company I don't like implores practices or ideas into their games that I don't like, either.

I have not played a single game from EA or Activision since 2008. I think I'm doing good. The last EA game I really played was Dead Space, which bored me so much I never finished it.

I wonder if people dedicated as much time, or even 10% as much time, to real problems in the world as this stuff, where we'd be...

People complain 10,000 times as much against, their cell phone company or, DLC, as they do govt corruption or people starving in africa.

I usually just buy whatever interests me but if it is a piece of shit I will return it.

Amazon refunded me in full for Silent Hill HD.

Dead Space 2 was my last EA purchase and I have been able to hold out since without dying or feeling like I am missing something. Scratch that, I did buy the Wing Commanders on GOG. Other than that, or a new Wing Commander game, they are not going to seeing anymore of my multicoloured money.

I feel the exact same way about folks that complain about complaining.

I typically make decisions about games on an individual per-game basis rather than by entire companies. With each game I consider the DRM policies, DLC, price, amount of content etc. and make a decision to buy or not to buy. Sometimes wanting to support a particular developer will influence the decision to buy, but I can't remember ever being influenced in the opposite way (i.e. Activison published this game, so I want to buy it less.)

Or sometimes I'll buy a game because I want to support just the genre, or a decision by the developer. The best example is I tend to buy WRPGs at much higher price points than I will pay for any other games because I really want as many WRPGs to be made as possible. In reality I probably shouldn't let this influence my decisions though, the notion that me buying or not buying a game at $30 instead of $10 will effect whether future games gets made is nothing more than a self-empowerment fantasy. I tend to think people who say "EA did this so I'm not buying any more of their games even though I really want Mass Effect 3" are suffering from the same fantasy.

And to be honest, if I stopped buying games from companies who I thought acted in ways hostile to their consumers, I wouldn't be able to buy very many games. Not even paragons like Valve would make the cut.

Edit: If I played console games, and the Used and New versions were identically priced, I might buy the used version as a little tiny "fuck you" to a developer or publisher I dislike. Again, it's more making myself feel good than having any meaningful effect on the developer.

Game is better without the Catwoman DLC. It doesn't feel like it was intended to be part of the SP experience until very later on in development (wouldn't surprise me if they were forced to shoehorn it in so they could ship the game with a pass), so I wouldn't say they held back a portion of SP DLC, she adds nothing to the overall story and the game flows better without it.

Might be alone in thinking that, but having played with and without the DLC, the latter is infinitely better.

To answer OP, I haven't bought a Capcom game since Revelations and won't be buying any EA games after Dead Space 3. Fuck 'em.

If a multi-console game doesn't come out on PC I don't end up buying it.
But that's not really a stand against the companies, more the fact that I don't have a console hooked up anymore.

I did cancel my Arkham City pre-order on Steam when they kept delaying the game for months. Ended up waiting an extra month or two and got it half off.

Oh yeah I didn't buy Mortal Kombat because of online pass. Mortal Kombat is one of my 5 favorite franchises in gaming and I've been buying them since the SNES. But nope, I'm not supporting online passes.

I loved Arkham Asylum but yeah I haven't bought City because of that bullshit.

Good question. I tried to boycott Sony BMG for their sinister root kit maneuver, but it lasted maybe just a year or so. Today if I'm in doubt of purchasing a CD and it has the label 'Sony Music', there is still a big fat chance that I don't buy it just because of their past. But it is not a dogma for me.

I can't say what a corporation must do to arouse my anger to the max, but there is definitely a limit for assholish shenanigans.

Capcom can release whatever it wants that I probably won't buy it. It helps that even if it's something I find interesting they find a way to fuck it up thus ruining any interest I had in the game.

Specific games more than the publisher/developer as a whole.

Activision may suck for some, but Treyarch, Vicarious Visions and most recently Toys for Bob are great developers that go the extra mile (especially when it comes to Nintendo hardware). Beenox did an amazing Shattered Dimensions (which I supported) and a crappy Edge of Time (which I didn't supported); so depending on this year's SM game I'll see.

So, things like that. The way I see it is that if I decided to go against all this "big companies", I might as well stop playing videogames all together, even on PC. Even an awesome company like Valve and their Steam service wouldn't mean much to me by not having a computer either Microsoft-related or Apple related; tried Ubuntu once and Steam to work still needed an emulator of Windows..and still was slow. I'll also stop watching movies, using internet, etc. So I rather go on a case by case basis, rather than a whole.

EA may suck for that, but Visceral is a great developer, Bioware is too..and heck, Bioware is one of the few developers that puts some kind of LGBT content (as lame as it sometimes is) which EA allows too..so, case by case. :p

The Online Pass was removed from the Komplete Edition and the Vita game doesn't have one; so is no longer there..need to confirm on "vanilla copies" though.

For me it's very simple; if my providers does not live up to my expectations, then I stop using them - it might be issues with price, quality, service level etc. Same goes for game companies, most notably since they aspire for my limited "disposable" income.

EA is pretty much destroying the Bioware name tho..

they really go the extra mile for people who have issues with these kinds of stuff, lol

The catwoman stages were short and extremely forgettable. You guys shouldn't skip this amazing game over it.

No, but mostly because I don't care. I play video games to have fun and relax. I do lots of other things for other reasons and I just simply spend money on things I want. I don't go out of my way to boycott companies .. I've got other things to worry about. I buy games I want from the cheapest outlet available. I don't care who the publisher or who the retailer is.

Fun, relaxing and cheap, thats what a hobby is to me.

That too, which is why Dragon Age 2 was a no-no to me, but Mass Effect 3 was..ending-stuff aside. :p

So I'm keeping an eye on DA3 to see how things pan out.

My trouble is, I'd like to boycott Capcom for not localizing their games I want to buy, but since they don't localize the games from them that I want to buy, I can't really boycott them.

Ah, that's great to know! It's a good thing they came to their senses.

It's the principle of the matter. I'd throw in a Dark Knight quote but I'm too sleepy to remember one.

This is what makes it hard for some people to boycott certain publishers. Because in the end we hurt the folks we have the most love for and that's the developers.

More often than not if I hate EA and refuse to buy a game like Syndicate published by them on day one it's folks like Starbreeze that actually feel the consequences.

That's the truly shitty side of this biz.

Activision is terrible to their devs it seems.

This sounds bad, but they've never done anything bad to me as a consumer though.

Yeah, sure, why not? There's too much entertainment bullshit out there to begin with. If I had to cut out certain games then I'd have more time to read books, listen to music, and watch films.

hmm, other than shit ports I can't say a lot of those issues have affected me, so I usually don't care, I could see why it would for other people, I don't really see it as supporting or boycotting but buying what I would like to play.

I think DLC is more of a conveniency issue than anything, I have a set amount of money I would spend on a single video game, so it depends how much contents they're trying to sell me for $60, it becomes a bit inconvenient to have to worry about what extras to buy to "enhance" my experience of the game, what are the things I don't get, and how long the game is, so I usually just don't bother with them, if I really absolute need all those stuff then I guess I would just wait for some kind of "goty" edition or price drop since I don't find the base game worth my money.

I'm not sure what online passes are, it's just serial number in uncharted 3 right? That didn't bother me much, I've bought games that uses GFWL and that didn't bother me other than the client is kind of poop.

I haven't bought an EA game in some time and those that I have played were from friends lending them to me. I'm not really a fan of their online pass. The last game I bought was Mass Effect 2. I don't have a problem with stuff like Batman AC though.

I also haven't bought a Capcom game in some time, thought I don't know if it's cause of their on disc DLC or just don't like their games. The last Caocom game I bought was TvsC

I don't care as long as I get the games I want.

And honestly, it's seems like a bit of an entitlement issue if you think a lack of price drops is anti-consumer.

in that case i just havent bought the games because my interest wasnt enough to get said game at said price, nothing against the company

I know it amounts to nothing really.

1. I rented NG3 because it had an online pass. I probably would have actually bought it maybe at 30 or 40 bucks to check it out otherwise.

2. I didn't/won't buy SFxT because it's Capcom. I probably would have bought it day 1 otherwise.

This reminds me of a good example: I ussually despise Ubi on PC, but i got Rayman Origins since they surprisingly got rid of the launcher, the intrusive DRM, and priced it at $30.

Im surprised and i'll be paying attention to the next release. Time to make amends Ubi!

You're in luck good sir... Mirror's Edge is out on Steam, have fun!

As for the topic at hand, sure i am, if the games are sucky enough lol

I don't think I ever bought DLC before Theatrhythm so it never really bothered me in the past. I guess I'm still going to buy the games I'm interested no matter what the company does in the end. But I often buy games used lately so...:X
