Diablo 3 Beta [Beta withdrawal underway!]

Is there going to be any kind of "Starter Edition" like WoW and SCII have now? Or at least buddy passes like SCII had at launch?

I'm interested in Diablo 3, but I'd really like to try before I buy and I missed the beta weekend. :(

Yea, sometime after release (or on release, not sure) they said there's going to be a starter edition to try out.

Still, when your typical forum-goers decide to venture into HC and lose their characters to lag, or even legitimately, the crying on the forums for a way to revive them will be legendary.

New 15$ Battle.net feature!!

Anyone know of any place selling collectors editions near retail price? eBay has them at ~175 now, so I doubt it :(

I got one on May 1st from Amazon because they go back on sale when people cancel their order. Your best bet is to stalk the Amazon page if you don't want to pay out the ass on Ebay.

I can't even post on the Diablo forum because I don't have a level 10 (or is it 20?) WoW character...

WASD isn't even more precise than clicking- if anything, it's the more accurate, superior, and advantageous control scheme. WASD is just helpful for those of us with shakier hands; I don't see why Blizzard would view it as unfair to the clicker playerbase. (who could use WASD were it implemented in the game anyways- does Blizzard ban keybinding in WoW because it's unfair to the clickers? No, we are free to bind as well) The decision strikes me as poor all around.

It can be advantageous because could more easily dodge attacks while attacking and it makes animation cancelling easier (not that it's that hard as it is).

It's not like there's even PVP in the game at release. What a joke. There's no ladder, and co-op isn't competitive. RMAH doesn't even factor into this; some nebulous advantage afforded by WASD functionality isn't going to affect droprates.

Screw that. If we are going to have fun watching people dump money into reviving characters, make them go deep into their wallets. $2 per level of the character you are reviving.

A funny thing is that click-to-move exists in WoW. Oh the horror of options!

I can quite imagine encounters like Garr(? I think he was called that, quitted before the first expansion/desert world event) and someone saying: Oh sorry I blew you up dude. I had to do a 180 with my mouse first.

So you wanna WASD, do it and be happy. Just don't come crying when/if Blizzard finds out.

I think the whole WASD thing probably should have ended there abouts. Its spawned into this huge thing with folks arguing back and forth lol.

Still, when your typical forum-goers decide to venture into HC and lose their characters to lag, or even legitimately, the crying on the forums for a way to revive them will be legendary.

I know for a fact this is going to happen. A whole lot of WoW players are going to flock to this game, and a LOT of them are going to go "I made it to max level on a PvP server, so Ill be fine in HC mode" and they are going to get destroyed.

The amount of crying about "lag" and "I died because your servers had the hiccups" will be a thing of legend. Its going to be a fantastic read.

A funny thing is that click-to-move exists in WoW.

So do UI mods, and yet none of those are going to make it to Diablo 3. They are drawing a lot of lines in the sand. Whether or not they should, I dunno, but it seems really clear that they have no intent on handling these two games the same at all.

Anyone have a suggestion for a screen capping program (that isn't fraps) for D3? I've tried fraps (1gb a minute? fffffuuuuu), and MSI Afterburner (it won't pick up my audio for some reason).

GO WATCH GAME OF THRONES!

I want to, but I can't remember my HBO Go log-in information, and I forgot to DVR it. I'm having withdrawals right now. I have to wait for the next showing =/

There is a program that renders on the fly but I can't remember the name. Maybe google for it.
Xsplit has local recording(to .flv), but don't know if it's in the free version.

Recording/encoding and so on takes alot of time and place if you want to have a decent quality.

If only Xsplit didn't need to be subscribed to. Thanks for the suggestion though.

(I'm sure their product is worth it and all that, but there are free alternatives out there. For straight capping anyway; I don't need the streaming functionality)

God I can't wait for this game so I can stop looking at the official forums... So starved for information I venture into that cesspool.

This is one of them landmark PC releases that makes you proud and happy to be a PC gamer. It sounds dumb to say but I am really happy about gaming on PC and how great it is.

you will probably hear of me in a matter of minutes.

I was a bit put-off at first playing the D3 beta and having to click-control my character. (I hadn't played D2 for a LONG while)

That being said, from a design standpoint, isometric view and WASD together are just awkward. So, what, does W make my character go North? A = West, D = East, etc.? With WASD sure, you have an additional control scheme, but it comes with a reduced freedom of movement. (8 directions)

The reason WASD works so well in 3rd and 1st-person is the ability to set the camera behind (or as "your" eyes). Also, your movement or direction in 1st and 3rd-person isn't controlled by keys, it's controlled by a stick (precise) or a mouse (even more precise).

Implementing WASD would compromise the player's control in an isometric game. This is incontrovertible. Blizzard may compromise with its player base on some issues, but certainly not on game design. So unless you expect them to turn Diablo into 3rd or 1st person (if you do, I don't want to know you) please, give it a rest.

Enjoy the game for what it is.

I don't think Blizzard will ban you for using a WASD script, but use it at your own risk.

They're not going to come out and say it's OK because really there's no way to "officially" draw the line, but people do use various scripts and tweaks in SC2 which are generally fine. Again though, at your own risk.

I wish they would open up Diablo 3 to UI mods like WoW has, though. They seem to be going for a more and more purely controlled experience, which sucks in some ways.

I think whatever Yoshi has is catching on; I completely forgot to watch Game of Thrones.

Bah. I took time off working on the OT to watch Mad Men!

Pretty much this.

And it's definitely not the entire reason, but at least one motive for disallowing mods would be to help prevent possible exploitation with the RMAH in the mix of things.

People complaining about not being able to use WASD or a controller would be like me complaining that I can't use rudder pedals in Counterstrike. Mouse is the optimal way to play Diablo, I can't see playing it comfortably any other way.

My hype for this game is so big, I've been playing Diablo 2 in preparation for it's release. Hopefully I'll be able to beat it by the time D3 releases. Can't wait <3

Is this ... is this a thing? Like, is there someone out there doing this?

It is one of the many terrible analogies people have given to help fuel their fear of teh WASD.

I watched the video of someone who had gotten his PS3 controller to work in the Diablo 3 beta, and it was just painful to watch, nobody would want to play it this way!

You should go check out the Torchlight thread when people started using 360 pads. Nearly universal praise.

True but that doesn't really apply to Diablo, it messes up the legacy feel of Diablo 2.

This reminds me of the thing with Resident Evil, not being able to walk while aiming making it more tense. While people that have been able to walk and aim in other games including dead space thought it was just limiting to control, or control options.

If WASD movement was in I'd map it to a controller, and try the controller + mouse thing. Oh well.

My screensaver is that one of Tyrael looking at you. Now I'm reminded every 10 idle minutes that I still can't play Diablo.

What the hell are you talking about? Direct control for movement in this type of game is awesome. Have you ever played Sacred 2, for example? Anyway, I don't really mind using just the mouse, but I'd really like to have the option for direct control, too. It's pretty much objectively superior for projectile based classes. Best way to kite stuff is using WASD to move while targeting your attacks with the mouse.

Also, pressing simultaneous W+A for example to move straight left would suck, I disliked WASD controls greatly in other isometric games, a stick might work though.

You would essentially be turning it into a twin stick shooter with awkward movement controls, lol.

I fear the nerd induced destruction that would follow that day more than that becoming a reality.

Thanks, looks like I'll be checking amazon for the next few days.

@injurai I say that in jest, but I remember how blizzard/activision went stupid for money, imo, with faction changes, race changes etc. in WoW. Although, this is a much bigger deal, so I'm not worried about it happening....yet

The starter edition will probably be the content from beta.
