The Wii U Speculation Thread V: The Final Frontier

I was thinking that it's an Android/iOS app, too. This means that Panasonic should be able to scale it down to even their cheap television sets, which could be an eventual danger to Nintendo's touting of the feature.

The way the Wii U does it, if my guessing is correct, is that swiping to the TV might use the IR transmitter to change the TV to its Wii U input while simultaneously having the console display the image. I mean, there has to be a reason why the DRC has a TV remote thingy embedded at the top.

I've always figured they put the IR transmitter on there for the same reason they put it on the 3DS: It's cheap, allows Wii U and 3DS to exchange data easily, and can even be used to add peripherals (like the Circle Pad Pro) to cover their bases if they screw something up. But obviously Universal Remote functionality is possible as well. It doesn't mean they're locked into one way of doing things, though.

It could end up being something like the Verizon Fios app for the 360 (which kinda sucks, btw, but it's a start). For the DRC to display information about the program, it would have to interact with the cable provider somehow, I would imagine. It seems Nintendo want to go beyond merely switching channels/inputs with the controller. Wasn't there a patent concerning this type of thing?

BTW, there isn't a single good EVA game out there. I want a good EVA game.
You should checkout EVA 64 and the ps2 games.

That isn't an EVA game lol

Who ever made that gif of EC avatar with reggie I cannot help but stare at his avatar now expecting it to change.

No problem ;)

I had to use special filters in Photoshop to unravel his real face - and as you can see from his recent posts, we can assume the content of the .gif is the truth

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
It's been a slow news week so far. Calm before the storm?

I would think so, but the CoD not being announced for Wii U when we all know it is coming makes me think absolutely nothing official will come out before E3.

I didn't actually know that 3DS had an IR transmitter. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Not a problem! Looking quickly at the Smart Viera website, it doesn't actually speak of displaying channel guides or program info on smart phones/tablets. If Nintendo can work it out w/ the cable providers, those features would be something extra in addition to the things which Wii U and this Smart Viera tech seemingly have in common.

Are you talking about screen performance in direct sunlight?

No, I'm talking about systems that are "sort of" considered portables by some but that you'd have to strap onto your head somehow if you wanted to use it in an actual portable manner. Not talking about anything contemporary. :)

How long has that been on the market?

Virtual Boy

Oh, okay. I'm not sure who'd consider it a portable--it was certainly never marketed as such, unless you're counting the awkward use of "Boy" in the name. It's like a portable in that it uses an integrated display rather than an external one, but the fact that the controller is separate from the main unit completely disqualifies it from that category.

I once saw someone create a headband in order to render his VirtualBoy "portable." His headband idea semi-worked.. until he walked into the wall with it. I still tease him about it to this day..

This generation has and is going on as long as it is only due to the fact that 2/3 of the console makers priced themselves out of the market for the majority of the generation. Its an artifical lengthening by the fact people who want to jump in are finally seeing reasonable pricing.

VERY good point. The adoption of motion controls by Sony and Microsoft has also been an important factor though.

The PS3 in particular was having major problems until they dropped the price to 400 dollars. There were even several months when the GBA outsold the PS3 which was just plain ridiculous :Oo

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
I wouldn't get too caught up on what was released at that time. To semi-translate what he's saying, it would be akin to switching your graphics card from a 5770 to a 6790. Paper spec-wise they are virtually the same, but because the 6790 is more modern there are things it can do better which in turn gives it an extra (small) boost when it comes to current games that can utilize those things. An example of what could be said is that an even more modern tessellator, like what may be used in the GCN GPUs, was added during the tweaking process.

Gamecube's Flipper has a tessellator?

Hey i just saw that on tv, in france Smart Viera ad ...

Problem or not ??

Could be, but actually I think Microsoft should be more worried with their Kinect.

Samsung's CES 2012 press conference is going on right now, and it's unveiling new products including the top of the line ES8000 LED model that packs a dual core CPU to run its apps, and an integrated camera and microphone for "Smart Interaction"....

Beyond that, the "Smart Evolution" feature will let users swap out that dual core processor for something heftier later on if they want to upgrade. Finally "Smart Content" is the umbrella term for a wave content and apps including, of course, Angry Birds...

Smart Interaction cameras and mics for videoconferencing as well as voice and gesture control.

WiiU's controller is much more gam-centric than kinect will ever be.
WiiU will also be out earlier. WiiU with a TV that has kinect like attributes can be seen as complimentary to each other.

But buying Kinect2 when a Kinect like TV seems superfluous.

Exactly.

They clearly see Kinect as an integral piece of their ownership of the living room, but there is going to be HUGE pressure from competitors when it comes to that sort of tech. If TV's are coming built in with voice recognition and camera control, its like you said, what's the appeal of Kinect2? Just games? How long can Kinect stay relevant before the next big thing in gaming is released?

Kinect's popularity continues to baffle me. It's like the Wii in the sense that it has tons of widespread appeal and that a majority of the people who have it use it less than 10 times, but at least the Wii had good games coming out for it on a regular basis. The Kinect hasn't had one BIG game for it since it launched with Dance Central.

That's the only reason people bought it. I bet people felt pretty lousy once they realized they spent $150 to play one game.

I know of precisely one person who owns a Kinect and, judging by his Gamertag, used it three times to play games and that was within the first two weeks he owned it. Nothing since. He claims he uses the voice commands to control Netflix for his kid while he makes dinner but that can't have been an issue more than a dozen times.

what is going to happen to the TV? I think there are people in here who know more about this topic than I, but when you look at things like electronics magazines, they basically state that "TVs will have multiple screens," or "TVs will work with smartphones." One of the Wii U's proposals is, "Even if you don't buy the latest TV, the existing TV in your house will become multi-screen." In households in Japan, I believe many families have recently replaced their TVs to watch terrestrial digital media broadcasting as the transitional period to which ended just the other day, and I do not imagine that mass amounts of those new TVs will be replaced in the near future. One of Wii U's proposals is that the TV will turn into a multi-screen TV that works very closely with the Internet, without replacing the TV

We need the EatChildren-avatar-merged-with-Reggie image in the "what's wrong with you?" gif. I can see many uses for such a gem.

You created a bad dream for me if it is indeed true Ill be scarred for life. Guess we'll find out at E3 :p

Yeah, most people I know useed it the same amount. GI editor Andrew Reiner did a good blog post called something like "why I regret buying Kinect" it kind of sums up the issues with it, if your using it for video games.

I've grown to like subscreen very much. Better than uPad, which is what I was calling it.
But subscreen refers to the screen and not necessarily the whole controller. How would you talk about just the screen with that term? For example, people would say things like... "I think the touchscreen on my subscreen has some dead pixels, Is this under warranty?" Confusing.

I still like w.u.c., pronounced "wuck". If we do get support for two controllers we can refer to the set as the wuc-wucs.

Speaking about commercial moves Nintendo should do for Wii U:
from today's Media-Create thread:

17./29. [WII] Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo - 4/10/2008) - 6,783 / 3,561,199 (+93%)

Instead of a 2d Mario platformer, that will be out for 3DS in August, I think that they should plan a brand new Mario Kart for Wii U (targeting a wide range of demographic with online, upad gyroscope and so on) at launch.

Cooter

Lacks the power of instantaneous movement
Well.....I now have June 5th off. Married with 3 kids and taking a day off for E3. What a nerd I am. Lol

Reading that Iwata quote makes me think about cloud gaming and watching TV shows through the Upad. Competes with 3DS as many have pointed out before but Nintendo could do more here than streaming games and such to the pad at home. They are in a pretty good position here honestly.

Don't bring out the big guns all at once. You'll need some aces up your sleeve in a console battle.

One of us one of us one of us

In this case, GCN = Graphic Core Next = the architecture used in the AMD Radeon HD 7000 series GPUs
I still have no idea why "GCN" became the abbreviation for "Nintendo GameCube". It's almost as if it was supposed to be called "GameCube Nintendo" or something dumb.

Worse, last time I asked this question aloud, somebody claimed it was Nintendo who coined the abbreviation in the first place. I don't know what to say to that...

Isn't that what Loki used to bring that big army to Earth? Damn. Now we know where the Pikmin hide.
No, that's a tesseract, not a tessellator.

Brawl: March 9, 2008
Mario Kart Wii: April 27, 2008

WHAT WERE THEY SMOKING

I actually never ended up buying Mario Kart Wii (I must be the only person on Earth) because I was playing Brawl non stop for 2 years straight.

Nothing wrong with having a hobby buddy.

E3 week is my favourite week of the year, my live in girlfriend of 4 years understands when I am awake on the wee hours (uk resident) watching conferences about videogames.

Can't fookin wait!
