Sven comments on Monster Hunter Tri G (again)

Tri G and Fire Emblem are basically the only two 3DS games I give a shit about, so I'm pretty well set up for disappointment, I guess!

In this case, it's Fire Emblem for me :l Been playing Sacred Stones for some time now. Even considering Shadow Dragon just so I can beat it (because its aspects sound more awesome now that I think about it).

I heard they were literally just about to publish it in the States but then Capcom decided to spend the budget on sourcing Mega Man to one of the Wrestlemania dev's.

I think he worded that post poorly. I don't think he's saying, "Don't hold your breathe for MH3G at E3." He's saying, "I wish I could tell you that we're announcing something at E3, but I can't. All I can say is to wait a bit longer."

Correct me, if I'm wrong.

Please don't get people's hopes up. If we're down like hell right now, we can spring up if it really is announced ._.

I don't get that impression at all, but I would love to be proved wrong.

Re-reading his post, I'm fairly certain I'm right.

That's not to say they're announcing it at E3, mind you. But, what he's definitely saying, in short, is that he has nothing to announce right now -- not even a timeline for the announcement.

I can't say I agree, that particular part of the statement is somewhat ambiguous, but everything after pretty much says "sorry, we've got nothing for you any time soon".

I hate to say it but I have a feeling we won't see MH unless they are built with online from the ground up. MH3G is, more likely than not, a bust. Not even thinking about MH4 right now, because any chance for a localization of that is probably a good two years away at least.

It's a shame too because MH3G just looks so good. It could really turn some heads here.

Yeah, sorry. That's how I read it as well.

Which fucking sucks, but whatever. I'm not expecting much from Capcom these days.

I think I could learn Japanese faster than it will take for these games to make it here...

I would be willing to stumble through Tri G without knowing a lick of Japanese but I'm not hardcore enough to buy a JPN 3DS just for that game. Nintendo's stupid region locking policy is at fault just as much as Capcom's reluctance to localize the game.

Plus it does so well on portables that Capcom's probably not terribly eager to make a bigger, more expensive version that would almost certainly sell fewer copies.
So what happened to the whole releasing the portable games as "HD" version, even though it's mostly just an up res?

Sony doesn't allow PSP remasters to be sold on their own outside of Japan. MHP3 is the only remaster they've done in the series.

SCEA didn't like certain things about MHP3rd HD (non-bundled PSP port, needs Ad-Hoc Party to play online) and pretty much blocked Capcom from releasing it in North America.

Nintendo paid for exclusivity. There's nothing more to it than that.

Or maybe it's just they could just get away developing Tri with a lower budget than the one needed for a HD version, as I gather it runs basically on the same engine as Resident evil 4 for Gamecube.

It has to be put also into due account that PS3 at that early stage had not a very positive outlook in Japan, whilst XBox360 has been irrelevant all along(Japan-wise of course), so the choicce of releasing Tri on Wii made pretty much sense business-wise from that standpoint.

Actually, I think Tri is just running an improved version of the other Monster Hunter engines, which are descended from Onimusha.

I think that's the case, as well. Despite the improvements in animation and modeling, it certainly looks a lot like it did on the PS2. Tri G was the first time they actually switched engines, but with the amount of asset reuse, you'd never know.

Either way, Tri was so much cheaper than what it would have costed them to develop something as Dragon's dogma on HD twins, that's possibly Capcom's biggest effort on Xbox/PS3/PC this gen, and it's not going to pay off that much according to their own expectations.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Im pretty sure that ir runs on MT Framework Mobile and wasnt developed inhouse.

Thats what i meant or at least was implying. Its the first MH to run on MT Framework.

Do you mean besides Tri, or that the two games run effectively on different engines, MT Framework and MT Framework mobile?

I thought TriG's engine is essentially just Tri's with less poligons and more advanced shaders, indeed for all I know it didn't take much work to import one's models/assets to the other one.

No, Capcom have said that Tri G is running on MT Framework mobile. It uses most of the same assets as Tri, but it also has some new visual effects like dynamic shadows.

Not just the 3DS in my opinion, why MHTri didn't come to 360 or PS3 is beyond me.

Monster Hunter on PS360 wouldn't have made much sense, honestly. The console releases sell decently, but they are ultimately rather meaningless compared to the handheld entries. Developing a console entry that Capcom can't easily port to a handheld would be a waste of ressources -- Nintendo might have a deal regarding Tri, but that's only part of the story why the game isn't on PS3 and 360.

Of course, it would have benefitted the US/European markets, but I don't think that Capcom Japan really cares all that much. Why make experiments if you have the series is selling multiple millions regardless?

The 'H' stands for hentai.
Because it would be much more expensive and wouldn't sell more.

Yup

The portable console iterations easily outsell the home console versions by a huge margin and the development costs are a fraction of the HD Consoles.

Capcom is sure stupid to emphasize the portable versions [/sarcasm]

The main entries you mean. 360 has like three Frontier games and PS3 has has Portable 3rd HD.

There's only 1 frontier. It just keeps getting updated and for some reason they decided to name updates like you would brand new games.
