Bonus Round: E3 2012 Preview [Up: Part 5: Thrid Parties Again]

So THAT'S how IGN leaked Donkey Kong Country Returns!

Or do they still keep those games secrets? (The makers, I mean.)

Everyone there will sign like a million non-disclosure agreements so shit stays under wraps. Also, they only have like respected dudes on the judges panel (such as, er, Geoff and Jeff), guys who know the biz and aren't going to go renegade now.

And Nintendo don't do judges week. ...I think. Generally, I believe it's already announced games anyway.

Judges week. Publishers getting their games out early for press folk to try out to save them the hassle during E3, and so they can vote for Best of E3 stuff. Jeff Gerstmann is there too.

Damn lucky bastards.

Let the leaks begin!

Pretty sure some people get to play Nintendo stuff a few days before E3. DKCR was leaked, what, 2 days before the Nintendo Press Conference?

Call of Duty PSVita is the big one.
Can't remember the last time when one singular title has meant so much for a platform (in my minds eye).

Last of Us blowout will also be cool.

I really never knew a multiplayer game could be vastly, objectively better than another.

Of course they can. Problem is whether you are expert enough to know the difference. Take a game like Starcraft. There is a reason (probably reasons) that it is so popular and enduring. To the layman or even someone who gets into RTS' quite a bit it would be hard to clarify as to why Starcraft is better as an MP game than pretty much any other RTS but I'm sure if you were to ask an expert that is what they would say. Same goes for fighting games, racing games, etc.

@Arnie: Argue all you want but the quality of a mp component is extremely subjective. It's all about preferences as all these games are of high quality.

It's not all about preferences. Depth, balancing, etc all come in to play as well.

So it saves them SOME of the trouble, but not all.

The reality of E3 is that it is a trouble magnet, judging by what I've heard on podcasts and forums and all sorts, so yes, not all the trouble is saved, even for a judge :p

Pretty sure some people get to play Nintendo stuff a few days before E3. DKCR was leaked, what, 2 days before the Nintendo Press Conference?

I imagine it's crazy limited if so. Also, DKCR was developed in the US, so leak potential was like 500% higher for that one, haha

Thank you! Agreed 100%

And I'm sure PS All stars will join the list

@Arnie: Argue all you want but the quality of a mp component is extremely subjective especially if the gameplay is different between the titles. For example I enjoy UC3 MP than both Halo or Gears. But that doesn't mean I don't understand the fact that others may prefer those other games. It's all about preferences as all these games are of high quality.

I agree %100 with this. Sony needs All-Stars to further enforce their dynamic, varied mascots across the generations and help promote the Playstation brand. Despite some people even calling for Sony to abandon or kill off the PS brand due to the PS3's initial flop, I think it's a powerful brand that is world-renowned.

They've been playing their cards right in rebranding the PS3 with the classic font, the blue associated with the previous hardware and even that iconic PLAY-STA-TION tick at the end of their videos or commercials. They just need to keep delivering on awesome, awesome exclusives and free online, while also improving PSN, although I doubt they'll be able to do that without new hardware (like the VITA having cross game chat).

Does SS really seem like a game Pac would be 'smiling' about? 'gamers' would be smiling, but dudes in suits would be more 'errr... this ain't mass market appeal'.

This is what I was thinking. For Pachter to get that excited about a game and grin like a kid, it has to be something big. Soul Sacrifice looks awesome but it's definitely not for everyone and definitely not mass marketable. He said it's something big so I'd expect a big AAA exclusive to shock everyone. Every time Sony lets all these other big cats out of the bag, they have to have at least one big shocker to have everyone leave going "wow..." I won't get my hopes up but I really hope they bring it at E3.

I don't think this will be as big as people think it will. Not that many people have Vitas, and unless you're double dipping... consoles (specifically Xbox360) will be the platform of choice for the COD player.

This E3 seems like it will be really boring. Gen is starting to get stale ...

I'm excited to see Nintendo's conference most, as I love seeing new hardware coupled with it's new software. It sucks Sony and Microsoft won't be showing off new hardware, but probably next year. Also, I need a damn confirmation of Fire Emblem: Awakening coming to North America this year - and Paper Mario 3DS!

I'm interested too to see what Sony has in store for Vita. I'm really interested in the hardware, but the software is too lacking for my tastes. I need more than Persona 4 to get me to pick one up.

In terms of Microsoft ... I kind of don't care any more. I use my 360 whenever a third party game comes out here or there.

So SONY = Games and possibly a hint of what the PS4 will do without any specific details about PS4.

MS = Strategy to make it simpler for stupid xbox owner to waste money on over priced content and banking on Halo and Call of Duty.

Lets see how it turns out. I honestly can't see MS showing a console, they are selling higher end console for 449.99.

The two are intrinsically linked. I don't like where this is headed, I've got the horrible suspicion that you're about to argue that Sony have some unsung darling of an exclusive that's as well crafted as a Halo or a Gears in the online space.

Gears was well crafted? Did you play Gears 2 online? It was one of the worst multiplayer experiences of the generation.

I feel the same way. I'm not sure why people are convinced that CoD will be the savior for the system in the West.

The Sess is looking like an evil madman at this point, dem muttonchops!

I was just curious, but what is Pachters view on Blizzard? Has he ever commented on what he thinks of their titles at any point? It's far fetched of course but I think it would be a pretty big deal if Sony were somehow able to get Diablo 3 onto the Vita. I want to play it, but I don't have alot of interest in playing it on PC for a variety of reasons, so if that were even possible it would atleast be big for me...

The way that he said it though, it looked it was something that "he" personally would enjoy playing and the two franchises that I know he's personally a fan of are GTA, and Fallout/Bethesda RPGs. All I know is that if Sony wants to hit their goal of Vitas sold, then they are going to have to push it at E3, game announcements, serivce announcements, pushing out content on a more regualar basis, getting PSuite out the door, and probably a price drop would all do well for it. I still think one of Sony's biggest issues with the Vita though is that right now it's the same price as their home console which will make it much more difficult for the average consumer to pick the Vita when they can get the PS3 for the same price.

I also think that they should have shut down PSP development before the Vita launch, and try to convince japanese developers to push their titles onto the Vita instead, because whatever the PSP is selling, is a sale that "could" have gone to the Vita.

Actually no, as Japanese devs that used to program on PSP can easily move to 3DS without extra effort when it comes to art assets and quality of graphics.

Pretty much. And vita is getting pretty close to the scary HD gaming, which a lot of japan game devs are still a bit iffy about.

Maybe not a savior like monhun in jp with it's crazy long legs, but it'll definotely move some hardware, although I have to see if it's a port or original new game. If it's a new game adding into the story of console blops2, I can see it be quite big.

Yup, not to derail this thread further but that's why I'm actually really curious about Nintendo's internal Japanese studios doing HD. We'll see how they handle it.

An unannounced Vita game sounds interesting. Assuming it isn't Call of Duty, GTA would probably be the safe bet. Other wild ideas would probably be Skyrim, Battlefield, or some Resident Evil game.

I don't think it can be a first party game though. They need to show that third parties are backing them up with exclusive games the way they give the 3DS exclusives.

Games.

Sssshh, the rabid fanboys will wack you for bad mouthing the company and it's games :p

It's going to be interesting on what Patcher and the other guys are going to say about Nintendo. Probably a lot of "Oh Nintendo is too late with worse hardware than the PS360, ah hyuck ah hyuck " kind of thing :/

How funny when in the beginning of this gen everyone was crying that the consoles today should be Multimedia boxes and now they should play games only lol :p

You're talking to a guy who thinks the Neo Geo was the greatest home console ever. All it did was play games. All it needed to. And it did it wonderfully. =)

Killzone 2's multiplayer is fantastic. Its on Gears 1 level in terms of fun.

KZ2 was Sony's system seller but they were to stupid and incompetent to bring it to peoples attention.
You cant expect something to be as successful as another competitors multiplayer game when you cant even give the customer a headset to communicate with and a decent commercial.

KZ2 multiplayer is the hands down the best multiplayer experience I have had with my ps3.
KZ3 is as bad as Haze

I agree completely. It could have been their battlefield like franchise after 2 came out, instead the CoD'ified the sucker and and now... well....

Didn't Sony show a Diablo clone for Vita at last year's E3? We haven't heard much about that game recently, and the last update sounded a little grim. Maybe I got the wrong idea from the initial media, but it looked pretty similar to Diablo 3. Obviously, getting the real thing would still be a big deal.

An Iconic multiplayer game is what sony is lacking.

Starhawk is a good game but still its still not enough.

Loosely, they do have one in the works. Perhaps they get it running cross platform? I'm talking about Planetside 2 of course.

Yeah, Warriors Lair (used to be Ruin), but I'm not sure whats going on with that one since it's changed developers at this point so anything is possible, it might not be anything like what we saw originally.

I just think it would be a big deal on Diablo 3 for two reasons, One is that it's Diablo 3, and two is that Blizzard does not usually do consoles, let alone handhelds, So Sony getting their next big release on the Vita would be huge imo....I doubt it's going to happen, but pacther seemed almost too happy about whatever the Vita game he say was. The wait for E3 feels like it's getting longer :(

Same time last year, Pachter was also very excited about a game Microsoft showed him a couple of weeks before E3. The game was Kinect Disneyland Adventures...

Found it funny how they kept saying how Sony should go on about how it's all about the games. This was Nintendo's policy with the GCN and we all know how well that went.

They do but all these games have those pretty well established. I personally absolutely love the UC3 MP. There really isn't anything quite like it. I'm sure there will be people who feel the same way about Gears or COD etc etc.

Not for me if Nintendo nails it.

Yup, Sony and MS are getting stale. Nintendo has my full attention this year, the only company that cares that I need a new system.

I could definitely get behind Sony becoming a "Games First" console. Fuck all that multimedia shit. We want your games. Games. Games! GAMES!

They are still making exclusive deals with content providers though. First MLB then the NFL, now Amazon for video. Sony very much cares about the PS3 being more than a games machine.

Pretty sure Nintendo is still all about the games today...

Weather and News Channels say otherwise and I'll eat my hat if they don't return on the WiiU in some shape.

During the GCN times Nintendo really hammered that they were only about the games. It was the Nintendo Difference™!
