Well I'm in.

And does anyone else find "The Last of Us" to be a pretty mediocre name for what could be a future franchise?
It actually reminds me a bit of Final Fantasy hehe. I mean, "Final/Last", as making it sound like it will the be only game in the serie.

Why?

Nobody reads post on GAF during the conferences, everybody is too busy watching and making post.

That's kinda why I offered people to come into the gaf tinychat room. I mean sure you cant record the reactions (Not sure why your doing that) but it's still good for voice chatting reactions.

True. I'll be on the sofa, iPad on the coffee table, during the conference. No time for posting - I want to pay full attention to the event we've waited for for so long. I mean, these come along but once or twice per decade.. this may very well end-up being something we remember for a very long time!

Stop making me doubt my ideas! :(

Looks good, but using this as an example makes it seem like you are referring to the art style and not the technical capability. Don't get me wrong as I want the Mario franchise to keep this art style, but from a technical perspective the Wii U version will make huge improvements on the art or the game.

I can already imagine the "Wii vs Wii U graphics comparison" threads :p

Man, E3 needs to get here sooner. Does anyone here think there could be a showing of the PS4 and Nextbox? I think a PS4 is a possibility. It'd be interesting to see how people would compare and contrast the two systems together.

We'll possibly see or hear something. I don't see why they wouldn't try and steal some of Nintendo's thunder this E3.

PS4, no. I genuinely don't believe Sony is ready and I think showcasing more new hardware at a time when they really need to convince people the Vita isn't a complete failure would send the wrong message. The only way I can see Sony announcing the PS4 this year is if they effectively cut their losses on the Vita, and I don't seriously expect that to happen.

Microsoft I can totally see unveiling the NextBox, sure. I think a sighting of the next Xbox coupled with the UE4 reveal would work really well for both Epic and Microsoft and give Microsoft a real mental and perceptive edge and upper hand in terms of "Next Gen" mindshare. I don't buy their insistance that they won't be showing new hardware and I never have done. I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if Microsoft reveal their next system - or at least, the core visual and service ideas behind the new system if not the hardware itself - as well as price cutting and bundling the hell out of the 360 for the Christmas holiday period to counteract the Wii U and place more pressure on Sony.

Skype (or Mumble) Post-Conferences Reaction:

Here how it's going to work. (FOR REAL THIS TIME!)
First, we need a host, that will stay for the whole hour, recording the session to later edit it and put it up on GAF so other people can listen to the reactions and discussions.
The host will need to put have all the participants Skype IDs, as he will invite them to the conference call OR set up the mumble server.

EVERYBODY WHO WANTS TO PARTICIPATE CAN. There is no limit! We'll then divide everyone into groups of 4. Each group will have 15 minutes of discussion, after that the host will demand the current group leave the call and invite the next group.

The groups won't be made today. I will only list who will participate and we'll divide later.

Host:
1. BY2K
2. AceBandage

I'm in.

but facial hair isn't always the same color as hair.

That's true, but I've never seen anyone with that light blond hair and dark brown eyebrows, without being the result of dyeing it.

Usually it's brown hair with black facial hair, or dark blond hair with brown facial hair. Not that drastic of a change.

Wait, why are we discussing this? They aren't going to reuse those assets... lol

I hope all those games with high production values don't increase the number of droughts by absorbing many human resources. Those games are nice, but I want a constant stream of games and I fear those two objectives collide.

Nintendo has been expanding aggressively, lots of new blood. Hopefully that mitigates the droughts, well that and the work that nintendo's studios have been working on for ages, which is the only explanation that I have for the Wii drought. If they stagger the projects that they've been working on they should be able to release a quality game every little bit to keep the momentum if 3rd parties don't cut it.

Lot's of fun in that there IRC. Although we got some shit-disturbers.

If you're reading this Gametrailers, you're all poop.

This is definitely one thing that Nintendo needs to work on.. staggering games releases.

But I suspect there's a profit motive that keeps them following this pattern. Since their games tend to have longer legs than most other games, the earlier they can get a game out on the shelves, the longer they get to collect revenue from its sales.

If they can't stagger more effectively, I'd love to see them partner-up with outside developers so that more titles are attracted to the platform. That'd be another decent remedy, I think.

He just doesn't look right being so tan with bleach blond hair. Come on, his eyebrows are brown! At least make them match.

I never noticed it, but I suppose the secret behind the added graphics/lighting features of the Wii U GPU bg hinted at, must be a mini-Sun of sorts that Nintendo has managed to manufacture (through a complicated Hydrogen fusion method) and handed to AMD

this accomplishes the lighting wizardry, the secrecy, the reason why the uPad is not carrying a 1080p multi-touch touchscreen (to save costs; stars are not cheap after all), and explains Link's bleached hair and tanned skin, all at once

I had a hunch.

Anyway, that comparison is completely night and day. It's really hard to believe that's the kind of jump we're getting.

Dude, it's Ganguro Link stylin' it up in Hyrulejuku Chapel, don't tell me he's too hip for you and your spunky scarf! :D

In terms of stylistic similarity, I believe SEGA provides a valid reference for the sort of leap Nintendo could make between this generation and the next.

This does give a really good look at what we could expect in going from SMG to Mario HD (whatever it may be called).

I can't wait to see what Retro does with more horsepower. The attention to detail in their environments has always been amazing.

One thing that doesn't impress me about this is the grass. I think it actually looked much better in Colors. That's more of a design choice than anything, just thought I'd point it out.

Everything else is amazing. The lighting, the geometry. Can't wait to see the difference from Nintendo.

Oh, no, I agree. In fact, I think it suggests that artistic choices are more important than horsepower...though having the extra power permits a greater degree of stylistic control.

I think some people are overlooking how much of a graphical showcase Pikmen could be too. Pikmen 2 was one of the most beautiful games of the GCN generation, and had a silky smooth framerate and a ton happening on the screen at once as well. The game could do alot to validate both the graphics, processing and the touchscreen. I think it will lo. ok stunning, and also displays a combination of cartoony characters, but also a realistic environment. If it looks anything close to the Bird demo it will already be on par with the best of this gen and surpass it in some ways, the conference demo doesn't do the on-screen demo justice, not sure why they showed the one on stage that they did. Retro's game should be everyones hope though if they are looking for something that looks a solid bit better than most of the prettiest games from this gen. They are maybe the most talented dev out there when it comes down to marrying technical wizardry with an amazing artistic vision. Give them a system, like Wii-U that for at least a year is going to be reasonably more powerful than the competition and I have no doubt that it will look better than games such as Last of Us, GOW Ascension or any other PS360 game, which is to be expected of any studio as technically and artistically talented as Retro working on the best Hardware.

I actually think it is important that Retro's game be shown well before PS4/720 really get rolled out, as it is the one thing (provided it is a more realistic/large scale game) that could really beat Wii-U's advantages on the hardware side into consumers heads before it gets overshadowed technically by the other console competition.

Yeah, the grass is really washed out in the Generations pic. Maybe it's the choice in colors of the grass or something like that.

EDIT: And as far as Pikmin 3 is concerned I think the biggest advantage of better hardware is better textures for the ground. Since you're so zoomed in on it being able to use higher resolution textures for the ground will do wonders for how the game looks graphically.

Most definitely. For some developers I think the extra power makes them feel as though they don't have to work so hard on the art itself because it's already backed up with nicer lighting, and higher resolution textures, but I don't think this will be the case for Nintendo.

Ugh the Naughty Dog talk is so silly as is people who think the Wii U couldnt do what Naughty Dog does.

Will the Wii U ever get pushed that hard? Thats upto developers and Nintendo. That said the machine can do everything Naughty Dog does on the PS3 and much more.

I can already imagine the "Wii vs Wii U graphics comparison" threads :p

Yeah I think I made that same comparison in the first thread. It's a good example (and abasm's post as well) of what I'm talking about in using the same art style, but the tech improving on what can be done with it.

I never noticed before, but I guess Link is officially right-handed now.

A travesty.

Haha. I don't think he's tan, just the lighting affects making him look darker (which is a good thing). Also OoT Link seems to have darker eyebrows.
