Hand in the air all day I agree with. Talking? Not so much. Millions of people have jobs that require talking the entire day. Maybe not jobs that require Photoshop though. I wouldn't want to be working in the art dept at a game studio with all the artists talking to their computers. At home though? Sure. I actually looked into doing this with PS years ago but it ended up being a pain to get the software working and I don't want to wear a headset. Kinect for PC with native support would be interesting though.

Well, as you said yourself, it could only possibly work for people who work at home.
But even then, sure..there are people who can talk 8 hours straight (just like there are people doing manual labor with hands ), but would you really want to? Having an option to do it much faster and with less effort with mouse and KB? As I wrote earlier - voice commands could ba great way to enchance the UI, but replacing it with voice only? Unless you're paralyzed from neck down I don't see why anyone would do that.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

No, not as a replacement, as an enhancement. I do look forward to a Kinect enabled desktop experience with finger tracking precision and voice control. I realize that you can do voice recognition now, but having to deal with a headset all the time isn't ideal in the least and standardization will help entice devs to include native support for voice and finger control.

I want to be working in Photoshop or Zbrush and be able to skip a song or play an album without taking my eyes from my work. Other times I want to be able to sit back in my chair and use finger or hand gestures to browse a web page or flip through pictures.

I don't expect gesture and voice to replace keyboard and mouse, just to enhance it. NUI is the future and by that I mean using the most comfortable method of controlling your computer for each specific task.

Well, then we are in full agreement :)

Apparently the Release Preview (Build 8400) is already out for OEMs and the people participating in the Technology Adoption Program (TAP) through Microsoft Connect.

Speculation says June 1 for release date for public although Microsoft only guaranteed the first week of June.

I still am expecting them to "release" it during their e3 press conference on june 4th....

Tried installing it again today.

I don't know why it keeps acting like I need more space, and doesn't just overwrite my current OS like a good little boy.

It's about time we got some hardware announcements.... gotta love how they kept the video all vague only to spoil it with the tags.

I grew up with Gateway 2000, so I check up on them from time to time. Their website hasn't changed since October, I'm hoping they (Acer) come out strong for W8.

I just bought a new OCZ Vertex 4 256gb but I'm holding off on using it until the RP is out. Gonna run it as my main OS (barring any serious problems) until RTM. Starting to get antsy. Hope it's out before the weekend.

June 1st, according to Wintk. I'm getting a new SSD as well, but I'm doing a whole new build tomorrow and don't have any other Windows license I can use until Friday, so I'm kind of stuck in an odd spot of needing a functioning OS but not wanting to set everything up in the CP and then a few days later again :(

I can't remember how it worked with W7.

Can you upgrade W7 to W8 RC? If you want to go back will you then have to re install W7 from scratch?

You can upgrade from W7, but if you have any doubt about staying with it and going back to W7, do not do an upgrade, just a dual boot or vm. You can't do a reverse upgrade install.

Anyone know if there will be an upgrade path from clean install of the Win 8 RP and Win 8 RTM? Not a big deal either way, but would be nice.

That wasn't supported either, iirc. You had to download the leaked RTM build and flash it yourself, with the risk to brick or "Walsh" your phone.

To install the beta yeah, but afterwards you could directly upgrade your beta to the release version and still have everything intact, which wasn't what anyone was expecting.

Something I've been expecting for a while, Microsoft blog talking about Windows 8 and Xbox, going to get some information at E3.

Whether on your PC, tablet, TV or phone, Xbox will be a gateway to the best in music and video, your favorite games and instant access to your friends. With the launch of Windows 8, we’ll bring Xbox entertainment to everyone. With Xbox on Windows 8 devices, we rapidly accelerate the reach of Xbox entertainment from more than 60 million people to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

We understand that entertainment has become a multi-screen experience where you and your friends are watching TV, listening to music, and playing games while interacting with your tablets and phones in new ways. We’ve got ideas for making all the entertainment you love more personal, interactive and social across the devices you love—and on the phenomenal Windows 8 devices that are to come.

You’ll see the first of that next week at E3 where we will showcase the very best of Xbox. We’ll unveil new games, show new ways to enjoy the entertainment you love and, as always, we’ll have a few surprises to share!

It's going to be an interesting e3 next week with the new music service and will be curious to see how it will integrate with w8..... I'm still hoping for the video subscription too but I'm not putting much faith in that.

What's this new music service? Whatever it is hopefully my current Zune subscription(paid out for a year) will transfer over.

Here's hoping we kinect won't rear its football shaped head.

No wonder Windows 8 tablets are going to be more expensive. Microsoft wants to nail the consumer experience.

Windows 8 Secrets: PC and Device Requirements Revisited

Back in January, I picked out some interesting hardware requirements buried in the Microsoft Windows Hardware Certification Requirements documentation. A few weeks ago, the documentation was refreshed and here are some of the interesting additions:

Backlight power optimization

Laptops and devices must now support the adjustment of backlight power consumption based on new cues from Windows 8. These cues will offer your PC more insight as to what you’re doing at the time, allowing hardware manufacturers to optimize the backlight for that specific scenario.

For example, if you’re viewing photos or typing up that 102-page report, the backlight will remain bright and optimize for readability. But when watching a movie or playing video game, tasks with lots of motion, the backlight should dim a bit and instead opt for enhancing pixel colors as a smart power saving alternative. Your PC will literally anticipate what you’ll do next and adapt.

Windows RT devices must not melt your skin

Regardless of system load, Windows RT devices must not exceed a surface temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius). And that requirement doesn’t just cover the little air vents either. It really means anywhere on the device, including its screen.

File this under Interesting Real World Problems: Microsoft’s is still working on how they will test for and enforce this requirement. A likely result is that OEMs will be required to submit some sort of proof — like a photo of a laser thermometer in action. But then there’s the question: “How do we ensure the system was under the appropriate amount of load?”

A proper headphone jack is required

It sounds like a no-brainier, but don’t underestimate the financial gains of omitting a headphone jack. Not only is Microsoft requiring that all Windows 8 systems have a headphone jack, they’re requiring a standard-issue 3.5mm jack. This is important because if there’s anything worse than not having a jack, it’s having a non-standard sized jack.

This requirement also layers on top of previous requirements that dictate all audio outputs not making popping sounds when you turn on/off your PC. It’s small but your ears and speakers will thank you.

Why go HighSpeed when you can go SuperSpeed?

Although no ARM-based system-on-a-chips (SOCs) support xHCI SuperSpeed USB 3 today, they could tomorrow. And if that happens, Microsoft will require that Windows RT device makers implement at least one USB 3 port before shipping.

They can't be too expensive though. No one is going to buy a Windows RT tablet that costs the same as a iPad. Android already learned that lesson.

Metro!

METRO EVERYWHERE!

From the screenshot above you can see that the new Windows Live Profile page now features the minimalistic header, which will be consistent across all Windows Live services (such as SkyDrive, Hotmail…etc.) in the near future. By clicking on your name on the top-right corner, it will bring down a menu showing all your linked accounts, as well as shortcuts to your profile and Microsoft account settings. The Settings button will bring up the link for options (if applicable to the service), as well as help and feedback. Whilst not seen in the screenshot above, there will also be a Messaging button, as shown below, which will bring up web messenger (more on that in a later post):

The actual Windows Live Profile homepage has also been radically simplified. As we’ve mentioned previously, Microsoft is refocussing its Messenger Social and Profile services, as such the page no longer shows your Messenger Social updates across Windows Live and other social networks, nor does it show things like your “favorite things”. The only thing it shows is your profile details, and this too has been dramatically simplified, with only your Contact and Work info available (General profile info, Education info, and Social info are now gone). This simplification also means a much simpler privacy model, as shown below:

As we’ve reported earlier, whilst all the “web activities” (those services that simply shared your own updates to other Messenger friends) are gone, all the “connected services” (such as Facebook and LinkedIn) are here to stay, and we will also see a few new ones too, as shown below:

Yes, after a long wait, Twitter is finally back. We also finally see Google showing up on that list (even though we know it’s already there). Also, as we’ve reported before, the Chinese micro-blogging service Sina Weibo will also make an appearance, which means that for the first time Chinese Windows Phone users will have built-in Sina Weibo experience in their People hub. The contacts from all these services will also flow into your contact list (on Windows 8 and Windows Phone), and automatically de-duplicated where possible (or you can manually link them).

I just wish they'd stop with having blank white everywhere. I get style scripts for youtube and gaf and such to make them mid grey or black, but it's kind of hard to do that with OS colors. Damn blinding and wasteful, considering the rising prevalence of oled.

I think winRT could be priced in line with ipad pricing.... the reason android did not fare well against the ipad was it offered nothing the ipad didn't already do better for the same money.... winRT does a number of things better than ios.

the metro makeover of the ms account looks like it went live recently (account.microsoft.com).... had been offline quite a bit the past week so I would bet the live account happens soon too.

That's typical of MS. They have something great on their hands and not idea what to do with it or how to use it.

Except for apps. But who needs those, right?

Honestly? Very few people do. Aside from few most popular ones, which will be ported...who needs them. THe only area where it could be a problem is gaming, but...gaming on tablet is a bit lol anyway.

I'm telling that my people in the Windows Phone thread for almost two years now. But I think they stopped believe me. :(

The Windows 3.1 comparisons are a bit tired by now, but... Windows 3.1:

Yes, very Windows 3.1-ish.

Thanks. Seems to be just a name change and going multi-platform? Zune already lets you stream music like spotify.

I think it will be more than a name change.... evidently they had to go renegotiate their contracts.... my guess is the "spotify" like part will have the free basic listening option like spotify and then still keep the premium version for us existing zunepass users but we will know more next week. Also them going multi-platform by releasing ios/android apps.

Since the browser will do flash it will need much fewer apps compared to something like ios.... you will be just able to go to the websites to view their content. That said I think the day 1 store will have far more apps than people are expecting because of how long the dev tools have been out in advance of the launch.

wp7 has been horrible in the gaming dept.... it has some big names from xbox but they are almost all gimped versions of the real thing.... even in the cp the games there seem to be more full featured (the ones that are there) so it does give me some hope it will not be treated like a bastard child in the xbox world. for example hydro thunder has places for all the console modes/tracks where the phone version had a very limited subset.

Funny, I logged into Hotmail last night and had a look around, and thought "wow this thing looks like trash". Good to see finally move ass in their services UI.
