Or to put it more into perspective, who would have thought after E3 2001 you would have to wait all the way until E3 2012 - eleven years later - to see a real jump in Nintendo hardware power.

Crazy to think about.

I saw a real jump in Nintendo hardware power in 2006, when we got a system more than double the power of the GameCube.

Pretty brilliant of Nintendo to announce vital bits about Wii U itself on a day when most people are not at work.

As an Australian, at 8:00am on Monday morning I will be getting ready for my day teaching my class :(

Fortunately I've got an hour and a half of non-contact time soon after to watch the recorded stream. I'll have to make sure I can find somewhere spoiler-free to rewatch it...

Hope it shows some of the evolution of the console. Always love those things, seeing previous prototypes is always nice. Maybe we'll see new things too

Will expire in 30 days so rehost when using it. (too lazy to register and need to get to bed)

True, but if Xbox 720 launches in 2014 (as it is expected to) it will have been 9 years between jumps in Xbox hardware power. We should all probably get used to ~10 year console generations from here on out.

Can't wait! Would love for it to be OS level stuff. For whatever reason, I get really excited to see new OS designs and layouts, sometimes more so than hardware details. It would make sense too, as I don't really see them going back into the controller so much, since I'm sure they will want to clarify the system for the mainstream press after last year's conference, and the main presentation on Tuesday will reach a much broader audience.

Mores o, I imagine it will mostly be a sizzle reel hinting about the potential with various developers talking about the system in general terms similar to what they showed last year.

Lets not get into semantics. Gamecube to Wii was basically like a Gamecube to XBox give or take a little here or there situation. A jump, but it wasn't even a jump to get you clearly from one generation to the next in hardware.

The Wii to Wii U, is at least a XBox to XBox 360 jump, probably more considering most are saying Wii U is more powerful than the 360. Yeah maybe it is years later and the 360 has been out forever and the next systems for the companies are coming next year, but it's still a big jump, and interesting just because it's Nintendo and seeing what they do with their franchises with that power.

I wish it was tonight. Less than a day is too long! :p

E3 is so exciting this year with Nintendo unveiling Wii U and Valve unveiling the Big Picture Mode and possibly Steam for Linux.

This is awesome.

Damn, we need Iwata's Mii head put on Pain(from Naruto) and doing that...thing he did to the village.

really can't wait to see Mario in HD.

Considering how good they managed to pull Mario Galaxy off on the Wii in SD, I'm expecting them to make other studios look very bad, and for it to run at 60fps. High expectations, but they set themselves up for that every time by being so good at what they do. Same goes for Retro.

Probably been said 10 times before, but I expect this to be largely about NFC and its possibilities. That will do much better in a pre-recorded setting than on the e3 stage.

It took a while for the hype train to speed up this year, but it's finally reached the critical readiness. Will it soar off the tracks in glory or crash in a GAF meltdown for the ages?

Seriously, my hype has reached astronomical levels. I can't remember being that hyped for a really long time. Nintendo has even put a countdown on their Facebook page regarding the Nintendo Direct! This is very un-Nintendo and that's what's amazing. Is Nintendo really doing everything the right way? I just can't believe it.

Ha! That was the first E3 I followed.
I was 14...

I remember the shock of seeing the GameCube hardware for the first time. Or was that spaceworld?

Gaah this strategy is so brilliant. Nintendo decides E3 is gonna start a day early, theeen it carries through the next day with the Ubi and EA conferences showing Wii U software, then BAM, first party stuff and games in general on Tuesday.

YOU CAN'T BEAT A 100%.
