Rumor: Sega Europe about to close, no more Sega AAA, focusing on digital only

Meh. It seems to be purely speculative ATM. Nothing to get worried about.

Now, for the rest of the thread to devolve into an orgy of mourning for SEGA.

Alternatively, this MIGHT explain Nintendo's sudden decision for a Nintendo Direct on Sunday. They're buying out SEGA, and needed to clear room in the E3 show for the announcement.

Nintendo buying out Sega would be awesome imo. They would still let them have a lot of freedom but they also would bring Sonic back to his former glory and wouldn't let Sega make asinine decisions.

This would not exactly be in line with the new strategy they announced, so I suspect there's some level of exaggeration to this report.

Yeah, it sounds like there's been some miscommunication or distortion as this passed through the rumor grapevine. I'll wait for further information before arranging the funeral.

To be honest I'm kind of hoping this is true so that Platinum Games can find a publisher more willing to push their games.

Seriously? It's not like there's anything preventing Platinum from making deals with other companies. They're already working on a game for Konami.

I don't think even Nintendo can stop Sonic Team from making asinine decisions. That's really what you hire them to do.

I'm confused, does this mean that they won't be making anymore console Sonic games, or that Sega Europe, specifically, is being dismantled and relegated to a tablet/mobile dev?

Maybe just a poor translation or a misunderstanding in the reporting? I really can't see Sega seizing to make AAA titles in their entirety.

Sega's western studios are moving to social games, but Sega's Japanese studios are still going to deliver console games, yes? Please?
Small consolation if they don't localize them. :/

I imagine when it comes to those AAA titles it means they'd get the likes of Sonic out, but maybe not other stuff. And Sonic doesn't really need to be AAA (has it even been that by modern standards?) to do really well anyway.

translate by google :

. Sega Europe closing
. No more AAA games from Sega.
. Last AAA game announced by Sega at E3, developed by Creative Assembly.
. Sega will focus on mobile and tablet games.

Not really. The sentence is "Sega's last big title developed by Creative Assembly will be presented at E3 2012 in a few days". I'm pretty sure that just means CA's last title, not Sega's last title. At least I hope so.

I care less and less about AAA console games daily. Focusing on digital download, handhelds, and mobile is perfect for Sega anyway.

No, instead they make games for Sega, which then Sega merely dumps into the market or fails to release in some regions altogether, such as Vanquish and what's going on with Max Anarchy.

Basically if the total death and liquidation of Sega is what it takes to get Anarchy Reigns out in the west then so be it.

I mean, they intended to pare down their console efforts *HEAVILY*, but they still expected things like Sonic to exist and certainly to make digital titles for more than phones and tablets.

Yeah I think the article off. They apparently canned a bunch of stuff in development, like a supposed Jet Set revival, but I don't think they are completely ignoring consoles.

Mmkay, now that I've read the French source, I feel like this is more of an exaggeration.

This doesn't really make sense given that SEGA's strategy is to focus on just a few series and distribute them. It does seem like they're placing a greater emphasis on tablet and mobile game, and not just on AAA console games, so at least that bit of the article seems more plausible. It just says, "Sega's last big title developed by Creative Assembly will be presented at E3 2012 in a few days", and not necessarily by SEGA.
