This doesn't even make sense. "They're giving info now, so they must not have any info for E3. That means the others must have consoles too." Is that what they are trying to say?

what are you guys expecting from this thing?

could they really announce things today?

Stuff pertaining to the OS and such. No games though.

Where is that info?
Pretty sure the achievement system was a joke.

That being said, I fear a lot this... I'm one of those who TRULY don't like the way trophies (and I guess achievements) works. I'm a completionist, and I can't stand seeing non-100% in the console menu. The lack of hiding/removal and also privacy options drives me mad.

I'm even buying games on Wii instead of PS3, or not buying them at all. I probably won't buy games with online trophies, among others (loved Bioshock, can't get to play Bioshock 2).

Keep this out of my Wii U, or get it right ^_^

I think the idea is that Nintendo wanted to get their Wii U info out now before Microsoft and Sony announce their new consoles tomorrow. I don't believe it though.

This whole Nintendo Direct thing two days before the E3 presser seems really odd to me. I can only think of two reasons that they would do this, one bad and one good.

REASON ONE: To set expectations for the press conference. There is no reason to set expectations higher than they already are (that would be insane), so that means this Nintendo Direct is designed to set expectations lower, so that people aren't insanely disappointed after the press conference.

REASON TWO: They want to get the simple stuff out of the way so they don't waste time on it at the press conference. I really hope it is this reason. They only have so much time available for the presser (1 and 1/2 hours usually, if my memory serves me right) and perhaps they tried to fit all the info into that time window, but they just can't do it. So instead they are knocking out some of the simple stuff in this video, and then firing the big guns at the press conference.

Yeah the logic leaps are rather large.

Nintendo does something "hastily" (even though they only announce Nintendo Directs a couple days in advance) --> ??? --> NEW CONSOLES FROM MICROSOFT AND SONY

Concept news? Maybe this is like a teaser for E3 to build hype about an unknown feature or something.

Anyway, pretty exciting, I haven't even thought about games in months, but Nintendo always seems to grab my attention when they announce shit.

as has been speculated previously, and later confirmed by Nintendo themselves, they will be using the Nintendo Direct to focus on detailing the Wii U hardware. It's actually pretty smart, since they know the people who care most about the tech are the ardent fans and core audience likely to watch an out-of-the-blue pre-recorded livestream.

that leaves an E3 press conference for talking about games, third parties, etc.

I'm sticking by my theory that this event is to clear up time in their E3 press conference, which they will use to announce they are buying SEGA.

Basically, a separate event for core gamers... I could buy that. Then they could focus on really casual stuff at E3 without pissing anybody off.

The console itself will be $99.99. With a controller you can get it for $199.99. An additional controller, or stand alone controller will be $129.99. Yes, the controller will be more expensive than the console.

It's even less than that, just 60 mins. And that includes the 3DS block.

Again, people are trying to find hidden meaning to things when there aren't.

How would Nintendo know, anyway?

Companies as big as they are have to know what they others are planning on some levels. Corporate espionage is common place, especially in an industry where every hardware maker works with the same companies as the competition.

But yeah, that article is silly. To many illogical jumps.

If the only reason for this Nintendo Direct is to free up time at the E3 conference, then they would probably just shunt all the 3DS stuff to this, and leave the conference for Wii U?

The fact that they are not doing that makes me think there is a different reason for tonight's event. Getting a jump on the competition seems a good reason.

That's a very good point and I hope you're right, because I would really like to see the next gen from at least one of the other two.

I'd say Wii U still has one big secret which nobody has thought of yet.

Perhaps it's a tablet computer after all? Perhaps the E3 2011 console was a mock up?

EA and Ubisoft are likely showing Wii U software tomorrow and they won't have a whole lot of time to explain the particulars of the online system and controller. Nintendo has to get this information out there before then.

The fact that I had no idea this was happening this morning and now I'm super, SUPER hyped for it is ridiculous. It's basically the only reason for me to want to be awake today!

Feels like a desperation move. Like they know something bigger is coming from someone else tomorrow or the next day. I used to get amped for Nintendo announcements, but not so much anymore. Who knows, maybe this will be the time I'll come away impressed.

I hope multiple tablets are supported.

I'd be happier if they supported multiple touches on one tablet.

The most likely reason is because there will be third party conferences tomorrow where Wii U games will be shown and if there are changes to the console, controllers, or features, this lets Nintendo talk about them first before it being unveiled at, say, the Ubisoft conference.

For example, I am guessing that Rayman NFC feature was supposed to come after we had seen Nintendo demonstrate it.
