The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

I don't own a PS3, so I don't really know how good Uncharted is.

But Jak series and Crash Bandicoot series were definitely among my top 10. I believe ND deserves their praise, and if they are making shooters, maybe it is because the 'demand' is so.
uncharted is unparalleled in what it does. Naughty Dog is that good. No other shooter like it, and that's in a sea of shooters. The overall polish/visuals/presentation of story/voice acting/entertainment/etc... is unmatched in the genre.

Ubisoft's conference was great, and Sony had a few strong points with Beyond, GoW:A and The Last of Us. But yeah, Nintendo's going to steam-roll everyone tomorrow. I just don't get the impression from many of the non-Nintendo games this E3 that the devs feel inspired or like they're having fun making their games. Whereas I already get a sense of genuine joy from the brief glimpse we've had of Miiverse and NSMB WiiU. I'm excited to see what Nintendo has in store tomorrow to keep gaming fresh and exciting.

I agree with you. Videogames have gotten so "big business" that some of the joy gets lost from huge budgets and copycatting. It's one of the reasons I like Nintendo, but I do love what some indie developers are doing for the different networks and online. I just enjoy "charm," and it is missing too often in games anymore.

if Nintendo's 're-reveal' for Wii U can't top the conference for two systems '6' years after their life, by a significant margin, then I too will be disappointed.

However, I guess measuring bars will be different.

I care for:
- novel and yet solid online infrastructure
- great 1st party titles
- major titles from 3rd party; like a proper FIFA and NFS

I don't care:
- barrage of 3rd party titles; if I wanted those, I would already have gotten a 360/PS3

So far, I am really pleased with what they showed regarding Social Aspects of the system. Miiverse was amazing.

I hope for:
- 3rd party online hubs on the system; like B.Net, Origin, etc.
- support from Japanese AAA developers; at this point, Nintendo is the only thing that can save them and introduce them to the market out of Japan; well better to say, to save us and let us have Japanese games, lol

Haha, that's certainly true. I would hope Nintendo could beat that. I care for all the same things that you do. I just don't want anymore Ubisoft shovelware.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Really disappointed that Killer Freaks turned into ZombieU. Whatever about the demonstration of the game last year, the core FPS/RTS gameplay had a lot of promise, and it's a shame to see it's turned into what looks like a fairly bland zombie game with a terrible, terrible name. I'll wait to see the game in action before I pass further judgement, but it doesn't bode well for Ubisoft's support for the system if this is their big "mature" exclusive. Speaking of which, Iwata really should get Yves Guillemot on the phone and ask why the hell Watch Dogs isn't coming to Wii U, that shit looks good.

Also, call me crazy, but the fact that GTA V wasn't at either MS or Sony's conferences has me hoping that little bit more for tomorrow.

The cynic in me thinks Rockstar is just holding out for a desperate Sony or aggressive Microsoft to pay for exclusivity.

Have a bad feeling that Nintendo will still focus on some of the social aspects of the system tomorrow over showing games.

I swear if they spend 20 minutes demoing some new experimental niche game I will personally go to LA to bitch slap Iwata.

Whatever their top game is tomorrow, or 1 of the 2 top games, better open the show.

I want to see some major third party games confirmed for WiiU as well even if they aren't highlighted.
genuinely, which are people more interested in:

- in depth explanation of Miiverse
- 5 min show of Tomb Raider

I for one, do NOT want Wii U to 'just' become another system for multiplat titles. I really liked how Wii turned industry on it's head; Wii Sports is my favorite game this gen.

Jak 2 is one of my all time best games; the game was absolutely brilliant; I still have to play a game like that, I think currently there is non; it was like GTA, with charm, better story and platforming

I agree on all your points; it was better than the rest of E3 and had potential; I am just personally cynical that it was all scripted to make it look cool, the final product will not be much novel

It was definitely scripted to look cool, there's no question about that, but pretty much all game reveals are these days. I suppose my cynicism reserves have just been tapped out by this stage.

Naughty Dog pretty much handed Capcom their asses as far as survival horror goes!
They beat Capcom so hard at their own game it's not even funny!
Pretty remarkable move considering RE was becoming more and more like Uncharted!
That gameplay demo of The Last of Us, seeing how they barely got by on precious little bullets... brought back some good old memories.

This is the future of survival horror.

No one is going to pay Rockstar hundreds of millions of dollars for exclusivity. CoD is probably the only exclusive that would cost a company more than GTA. If it isn't announced at Nintendo conference tomorrow, then I really don't know what the hell Rockstar is doing. But i'm absolutely expecting it to be announced there. It should be their show closer. Reggie/Iwata should just point toward the screen and walk off stage as the the logo appears on screen before the trailer starts to roll.

I was incredibly hyped for Nintendo's conference, maybe it's how abysmal MS and Sony's conferences were, but now I'm nervous as hell.

I never said I want a 5 min show of Tomb Raider. But it would be nice if major third party games like it, Medal of Honor, BLOPS, and what ever else is out there would be confirmed for WiiU as well. Nintendo can have all their quirky games but if they do the exact same thing as the Wii with little to no presence from 3rd parties then it will mean another cycle where a lot of gamers will be forced to buy two systems just to play all the best games available.

Maybe I am just being pessimistic, but I have a bad feeling about tomorrow. I think because I expected more of a reveal today from EA, considering they were on stage last year with Nintendo hand in hand. I guess that could be saved for tomorrow.

Yeah same here.

I am really hoping for this too. I'm mainly hoping Wii U can get something as good as Trauma Team from Atlus. I'm not really sure what to expect from them or the other developers though...

This is how the conference should open.

Reggie walks out in a suit.
"My name is Reggie. I'm about kicking ass, I'm about ticking boxes, and we're about talking foxes."
StarFox x Metroid trailer plays.

Hahaha, that would be hilarious. I don't have a lot invested in either franchise, but I'll get either game if it ends up being good. I would prefer for Metroid to be 2D though I don't have good gameplay ideas.

I just re-watched the Rayman Legends gameplay demonstration from the Ubisoft conference. I can't believe how fun that looks. I take it back, playing as Murphy seems pretty damn fun!

Seriously? Last week someone said G4 is like the Fox news of the video game media world (a little more literally in IGN's case but still) and I'm now 100% behind that assessment.

Yah, that was me. I still feel that way 100%.

This E3 has been a pretty big let down so far. The only reason I can think of is that next generation is starting in 2013 and everybody's support is winding down in prep for unannounced stuff.

I can't believe there wasn't a Vita blowout today. Nintendo can really go for the kill with their 3DS conference on Wednesday.

BOLD PREDICTION: It will be dead and selling for $99 by the end of the year. Which is a damn shame, because it's an awesome piece of technology. But there is NO SOFTWARE.

it's because this gen has been carried on multiplat titles.
BOps II will sell over 20m even if this gen continues till 2014. So will GTA V, etc.

How the hell is it going to work if they change the resolution?
I don't know what his tweet means at all! but dunno, it will be double of what it is now, right?

honestly, 3DS beat Vita long time ago; it's like kicking a dead chicken
They should think something about smartphones

I find it disturbing they literally ditched 4 years of development (if the rumors about it starting development in 2009 as a Xbox game are true) so easily.

I liked what I saw from Zombi U so I won't judge it just yet but Killer Freaks from Outer Space had too much potential as a new IP and it was one of my most anticipated games this year.

I don't know if this was posted but it appears there are no analog triggers on the Pro Pad

"Just prior to Ubisoft’s press conference, I had the opportunity to very briefly get a close look at the Wii U Pro controller. In my hands, the controller felt almost exactly like a Classic Controller Pro. It had its predecessors smooth plastic contours along with a comfortable light weight. The 4 trigger buttons on the controller’s rear appeared to have the same button placement as those on the Classic Controller Pro and they are still digital as opposed to analog."

He is very reliable on leaks of things people dont want gaf seeing. He has been tossing hints out seemingly for a few weeks now.

Sorry I missed it but hints about what exactly?

And sorry I just can't get hyped and believe GTA is going to be announced. Nope not gonna happen.

You think you would be more hyped than ever after seeing how lame MS and Sony were, but the conferences kinda just killed my hype and brought down the whole E3 excitement I had. Cautious for tomorrow.

No analog triggers is a fucking bummer.

YOU CAN'T PLAY GC GAMES WITHOUT ANALOG TRIGGERS

Do they not realize this?

Few days ago he tweeted 800X480 and back on may 21st he made a post about what he would like to see in a 3DS revision that included larger screen, increased resolution, dual analog and DSIXL-vita sized as well as better viewing angles

Are the rumours of a redesign (like DS Lite) or just an alternative (like XL)?

I guess we don't know though. Hmm. Not sure how I feel about it. I do know however that if it's true, it would have been a cool surprise to not have spoiled :(

Wtf Nintendo you were so close to perfection and you just had to screw it up with this.

Wow--digital? Makes absolutely no sense. Hope it changes before launch.

Yeah, Rayman looks really good, and considering we've only seen PS3 AC3 I'll be curious if it appears for a game demo at N's conference. Game looks pretty damn good, regardless.

Guys, let's reserve judgment on Zombi until tomorrow. We've seen like .5 seconds of footage that was probably screwed up due to being simulated offscreen.

creamsugar is also saying the XL version won't play regular DS games, which makes sense considering how Nintendo usually does these things.

I imagine they'll start selling DS games digitally alongside the digital releases of full retail 3DS titles.

Maybe throw in NSMB as a freebie to entice people to pick up a 3DS XL?

well it could be an issue due to the resolution change. They went 800X240 on the 3DS to keep compatability. Games may not be very good looking

Well you can play most of them, not that many make use of the analog triggers iirc. Having said that, this choice is baffling. There's a lot of current games that make use of analog triggers. I hope they decide to make a change before the console releases.
