[N-Conf] Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate (artwork, images, features)

I don't know what you guys watched, but the graphics on the gamespot live demo I just watched looked awful. Aliased and blurry all over the place.

Absolutely LOVE the art direction.

?

I was listening to an E3 podcast/stream and the people that played the game on the floor had nothing nice to say about it. One being an IGA fan just blasted it, which was to be expected, but the other person, who isn't much of a castlevania fan, shat on the game as well. Their points were: mushy combat, shitty framerate and ugly environments. However, they did say it was a metroidvania so that's nice to hear.

That's what happens when you resize footage of a 3DS game to a bigger resolution.

I wouldn't exactly put Dawn of Sorrow or Portrait of Ruin above Mirror of Fate. Especially Portrait.

That comparison doesn't really work. The animu was only on the character portraits. In-game sprites looked (and often were) the same as from Rondo of Blood, Symphony of the Night or even Bloodlines.

So unless you want to say those games had worse art direction than this one...

I'm rooting for mercurysteam, but my first impression of that gamespot video was "wow, this looks like shit." :/

It gets better as it goes on but I will never agree that this looks better than a properly done 2D game. Trevor's face texture in specific bothers me so much. I also think the whip reaching across the entire screen is unfortunate. At least we're fighting skeletons instead of goblins?

Thanks! Oh and D: that doesn't sound good indeed.

Thoughts:
- Framerate is spotty, though graphics themselves look alright. Especially on smaller 3DS screen/resolution.
- Combat looks so-so. Platforming looks good, though I don't like the flashy ledges.
- Rooms look really big, plus load screens.
- Three Belmonts and one secret, fan favourite. Trevor/Simon and? Richter? Alucard?
- That annoying goddamn imp/hunchback has returned.
- No WiiU plans for LoS2. Haha, Paul Gale.

Question: How do all the "IGAvania haters" feel about this game basically being the same gameplay without the stats, and with a different coat of paint?
Oh please god have Richter!
he gets the shaft too often.

Right, I am saying that the art direction in general for those games, not just the portraits didn't do anything for me. I mainly love Castlevania for the atmosphere and music, not necessarily the art direction (not in all the games anyway). The best ones to me visually are the more down to earth looking installments like Castlevania III and IV.

Symphony of the Night was by far the best Metroidvania from an art direction standpoint. The rest were completely mediocre to me.

edit: actually let me backpedal a bit, I thought Dawn of Sorrow looked really good, as did Ecclesia for the most part

Richter is my favorite Belmont, and while I do hope it's him I don't think we can really say he gets the shaft. He certainly isn't on the Level of Trevor or Simon but he has gotten 4 games where he played a legit role and 3 of which he was playable.

Finally got to watch the vid. I got to say the game looks like it feels awful. Could very well be wrong but at this point not really sold on it. Still will keep an eye on it if only for the Metroidvania comparisions and to find out who the third Belmont is.

just the way I feel after he was DLC in HD(I know Simon was also), not in Judgement, and the fact that we never found out what happened to him or the Belmonts afterwards.

Didn't see it mentioned on here but somebody said Cox confirmed on his Twitter that Sypha is Trevor's wife.

Shit.

Well even if we didn't have the rumor of Trevor being Alucard the amount of links they have between the two would make it pretty damn clear.

I agree about him being DLC. That said Juilus/Simon/Richter are all DLC in HoD and we did get Richter in Rondo/Symphony/Portrait so I can't complain to much. That and while I really wanted a game that featured Richter and why he lost VK, even now if I could go back that wouldn't be the game I would want.

It would be the 1999 Game staring Juilus, which would probably link Richter to Juilus and him getting VK. So many lost elements. :(

So it is a Metroidvania for sure? Fuck. Like we haven't had a hundred of those.

It has elements of Metroidvania. It's not exactly and doesn't have level ups and that kinda stuff.

Even LoS had some backtracking and ablitiy to go back and get items and stuff.

Not exactly. It's going to have some Metroidvania elements. It doesn't look or play like any of the Metroidvanias. The similarities seem to lie strictly with things like being able to explore the castle, and parts where you can't get to without a different character or ability.

You mean the key elements that define a Metroidvania? I couldn't tell from the presentation (mostly because I wasn't paying full attention to it), but it did look like it had hidden items and gated areas. It also seemed as if the map was interconnected. If it relies on acquirable upgrades and characters, that sounds like a Metroidvania to me. However, if the Metroidvania elements are like in the original (which were so scarce as to be irrelevant), then that's a shame.

Looks absolutely horrible. The only reason I purchased a DS were the metroidvania games. Oh well, at least I can get some steam credit for my 3DS now.

Gameplay looks bad. I feel like the LoS style of "chain swinging through enemies" feels weird in 2D.

Looks great, definitely my most anticipated game right now next to RE6. Glad they showed a lot of it today to whet the appetite.

"Press R to Swing"
"Press DOWN to stop swinging"
"Press B to resume swinging"

Seriously, is it difficult to implement something like CV IV, a game from fucking 90's?

I don't know how I missed this trailer. Man I aint even upset about Wii-U with stuff like this coming to the 3DS this looks fantastic.
Ahhh man just watched the gamespot video. Expectations reduced a bit.

So at the 3DS presser, they said there would be four characters, right? We already know of Trevor and Alucard... think it's much of a stretch to just say the last two are Grant and Sypha?

Simon
don't think Sypha is playable, why mention her as Trevor's wife if you can't reveal her as playable?

David Cox tempering expectations regarding the 3DS game.

Several times he says "we have not gone metroidvania", but he also they've taken criticism to heart and have added exploration elements to both Mirror of Fate and LOS2, that there will be backtracking and such and have a more open world nature. So that's a bit contradictory with "we have not gone metroidvania!". Weird.

I played the demo @ E3, indeed there was noticeable aliasing even with the 3D turned off. Aside from that, the graphics didn't look particularly impressive to me. Not bad either but I've seen better on 3DS. That said, CV games have never been about graphics, so I'm cool with that. The real clincher though is the frame rate. I found it extremely difficult to enjoy the game as the movement got so sluggish when multiple enemies came on screen. It seems like it could be decent but as it stands the technical issues ruin this game for me.

It's probably going to be the same as it was in LoS, he said the exact same things for that game. I don't take too much stock in what he says anyway, he tried to sell LoS in ways that the game didn't fulfill (no QTEs, SCIV, nonlinearity) and he will likely do the same for this one.

They said three Belmont and one extra "fan favorite" character.

Is Alucard a Belmont? I was hoping for Shanoa...

I thought I was the only one. :( This game REALLY needs a playable female and Shanoa's style of fighting would be amazing. I'd be interested in seeing a LoS version of her.

That doesn't mean that it's going to feel like a Metroidvania game. Clearly the combat and style definitely segregates it. As someone else mentioned even Lords of Shadow had scant elements of going back to places after having the right skill to get upgrades, and while that could be argued as being "like" an element of Metroidvania, it certainly did not make LOS feel like one.

They can make a new game that feels totally different while having a few things that are reminiscent of some older stuff, but the game looks nothing like a Metroidvania.

This game just keeps looking worse and worse. I'm not even a very big Castlevania fan, but I just enjoyed the games and have played all the good ones.
