Oh for crying out...*sigh*...at this point they should just rename the damned system because if the media cant get it straight God help us all when the general public heres about it in passing.

The Nintendo Touch?

Are people just being stupid now by calling WiiU an add on? Everything should be clear as day. PS1,2,3 and X360 never had this problem so why is it hard to grasp the idea that WiiU is a new system? Goddamn masses ¬_¬
Everyone else actually showed off their body, Wii U has not. For the most part.

As has been said, he's also responsible for the Wii brand taking a nosedive from record-breaking profits to record-breaking lows. He's also responsible for the 3DS needing an 80 dollar price cut less than a year after launch and a dramatic retooling of its software roadmap to turn sales around.

I don't really think there's evidence of that, is there? The lineup we got in 2011 was pretty much set in stone from the beginning.

The rest of your comment is fair.

Ken Kutaragi developed two of the most successful consoles of all time before the PS3. He was forced into retirement. Just saying.
What happened with the PS3, financially speaking, was pretty extreme and doesn't warrant casual comparison.

Iwata's pretty uncomfortable right now, but he isn't presiding over a PS3 just yet.

Microsoft and Sony never spent the vast majority of the time only talking about their controllers.

I'm not making a Wii U == PS3 comparison, just saying that it's entirely possible for a CEO to have phenomenal successes but still get the boot for more recent developments.

Well they should have named it something completely different and changed the color.

Trying to gain the same success as the Wii at this point is stupid, consumers don't want more of the Wii.
imo.

Because those systems all had numerical symbols after their name. People recognize progression. A "U" doesn't represent anything. Those systems also had different font and/or color with each progression. PS1 was gray, PS2 was black, PS3 was black with a different logo.

because numbers are easy to understand, you know it's the next one

words/letters are much trickier, and it isn't as obvious, especially since it often is just indicative of an add-on or a minor upgrade or change (iphone naming conventions for example)

Now contrast those to:

and you know, showing the system a little more (aka at all) would also help.

I don't think Nintendo makes decisions in a total bubble. Their marketing research at some time must have indicated there was still some value to the "Wii" brand.

I'm just not sure that exists in 2012, nor is it worth risking possible confusion over just because it's recognizable.

Actually the above post hinted the possible solution: overhaul the logo, or at least do something like PS1 to PS2. That sort of thing immediately sends the signal it's a BIG change.

Early adopters are generally a lot more intelligent than these threads ever give them credit for. Right now, the people for whom things like naming and product description will be an issue are largely irrelevant as they will not be interested in a product they can't see or feel.

What happened with the Wii is completely normal. It had a perfect product lifecycle curve and they are releasing its successor just in time before it becomes insignificant.

They mismanaged the 3DS, but I don't really think they really expected consumers to reject it at $250 considering the positive reception it got. I believe Iwata was under pressure as well after that, considering the 01net rumours "ejection seat" and all.

I didn't actually catch that one, but rather Reggie's first intro, which was a zoomed in shot of both the system and controller: "this is everything new, the new Wii U console, and it's gamepad controller". At least in my mind, that was the most clear, pronounced public showing of stating of "it's a new hardware" in any video i've seen.

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
There is also Wii's history of peripherals. A tablet called UPad that was on Wii made by THQ. The system uses the same font and logo as Wii and it utilizes the wii remote and nun chuck along with the Pad in demonstrations. I don't see how this is a non-issue.

It's a non-issue as in there is no difference in attaching an U over a 2. And how exactly is Udraw causing a problem? The WiiU Gamerpad is included with the WiiU console. If you want the tablet, you have to get the console. I seriously doubt many people will mistake a three year old pepherial with the WiiU no matter the similarities.

Because Iwata is a horrible CEO.

He's clearly not accepting of constructive feedback from his employees and can't deal with those who have disagreements, since it seems in his mind they're always wrong and he is always right.

The naming of the system, the poor online infrastructure, and the same bad 3rdparty relationship really cements it.

The guy took Nintendo from "going third party" to releasing two of the most successful video game systems of all time. He is also one of the brightest people in the industry. Just listen to his latest GDC speech.

Suggestion: try not to make stuff up and assume others to try and make a point. I love how you know his mind. :lol

I'm sick of Iwata. I want someone new. I don't even care if the guy's better or worse. I just want a shake-up.

Be careful what you wish for, because there could be a LOT worse, and not many better.

Keeping the Wii name is definitely smart on Nintendo's part, it's the U that make no sense.

Wii U - strong wii brand name, but ambiguous can potentially lead to confusion. Medium to no risk, no reward.

Wii 2 - strong wii brand name, and the 2 leads to no confusion and clearly indicates it's the complete successor to the wii. Medium to no reward, no risk.

Something so obvious not being done just indictates the guy at top being hard headed.

They could get rid of the name Wii and just call it the Nintendo U

Nintendo Land should have been Nintendo U. A school where your Mii learns how to be a hero from various Nintendo protagonist. It would be a hogwarts/social network hybrid that you and your friends could hang out/play in.

But that will never happen.

Nintendo just needs to abort a launch this year and rebrand it at GDC, hell may as well wait for E3. They could show some fucking games and maybe release a few on launch a couple months before the new xbox and Playstation hit.

So even the host doesn't know it's a brand new console. We don't have a price and we don't have a launch date.
He does call it a brand new console and an add-on to the Wii. It's a handheld. lol

I suppose, if they want to lose holiday sales, lead time, and spend more money before the console is out the door, they could do this. The better idea would be to spend summer and fall going on tour with the console having people interacting with it and playing the titles. Let's also say they start an ad campaign say two months prior to launch. That would be way better than what you are suggesting.

Seems like an add-on given their horrible E3 presentation. New controller, sub-par hardware. Sounds like the Wii all over again, which is a shame. :(

It looked like it went pretty well. They showed off the throwing star game from Nintendoland and the AR functions of ZombieU. The crowd seemed to really like it.

Throwing star mini game? I guess it makes sense. It does show off the system's unique features I suppose, and the controller.

It's not like they weren't warned this would happen as soon as it was "shown" for the first time and they're continuing to not do themselves any favors by ignoring the console itself. People understand the tablet is the unique part, but the console and its improvements are still important to show off at every point possible so people get it in their heads that it's not the same as the Wii. I think it's unavoidable at this point though as the casual market will make this mistake OFTEN until it's actually put a dent in the market.

I'm actually kind of worried about getting this one which is a rare feeling for me. I guess the first time they show Zelda off is when I'll consider it, lol. For me, the tablet isn't enough to warrant the purchase unless they have some really good games which takes a few years. The games that I can't get on other consoles or PC are what's going to determine if I buy it or not. The article about not paying for exclusives is a little scary in that regard since they need some big titles to fill the gaps between their first party games and multi-platform games with tablet controls are not going to do it for me when other consoles are still unknown.

I commend Jimmy Fallon for having these weeks but it's also very awkward to watch as he has no clue but acts like he does. I like his show overall for everything else though so it's fine. :p

If they release the Wii U anywhere close to Sony and MS' new consoles, they will be in big trouble. They can't abort the launch due to Wii's current performance and rebranding it to Wii 2 will probably work, but it could be too late now.

Uh, Wii U sounds more like something like DSI than PS1-PS2-PS3. Those follow logical sequel progression, the letter U does not. Nintendo fucked up, just like they did with the 3DS's name.

They really should drop Wii out of the name and call it the U, or call it Wii 2...if not they better have some killer fucking marketing, because its not only going to be Fallon and CNN getting confused.

BorkBork

The Legend of BorkBork: BorkBorkity Borking
Probably why they're not going to sell extra Wii U pads separately or emphasize second pad functionality at least for the next little while.

This confusion is the price they pay for trying to latch onto the Wii name and popularity. Same deal as the 3DS.

So even the host doesn't know it's a brand new console. We don't have a price and we don't have a launch date.

Why do people keep bringing up the price and release date? Long before E3, Nintendo announced that they weren't going to discuss price or release date at E3. At E3 2006, we didn't know the price or release date of the Wii. At E3 2010, we didn't know the price or release date of the 3DS. So why do people keep talking as if this is some huge surprising mistake?
