Kotaku: Meet Ouya, A New $99 Console That's Not The X360, PS3, Wii

This thing may have some legs. Even if I can just play Android games on my TV it may be worth it. Easy to root, open system. Hmm...

Tegra3 quad-core processor
1GB RAM
8GB of internal flash storage
HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth LE 4.0
USB 2.0 (one)
Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
Android 4.0

Just asking, if I want to play Mame on this thing, will I have to root it? Or I will be able to do that out of the box?

BTW I don't even understand why they didnt ship it unrooted from the start.

I'm actually pretty excited by this. Media center, emulators, games, android apps for 99$? Sign me the fuck up.
I don't expect it to become popular though,

I'm interested in seeing the full controller. It seems like it's a Playstation 3 styled Xbox 360 controller which is nice.

An extra controller is only $30? How can they possibly make any money off of that, especially with a touchpad included?

Whoa: Just read the rest of the page

With your help, we need to:
-Convert our prototype to production-ready models and get all the regulatory approvals (yeah, we need these to sell them)
-Deliver developer kits (for early developers so we can have games on day one, though every console will include an SDK once we launch)
-Place our first production orders (we are working with a manufacturing firm with lots of game hardware experience, but we need to know how many to make!)
-Ideally, fund some initial game development (i.e., 1st-party games)

That's a long road ahead.
I'm not sure if $1MM will be enough to fund what is essentially the final development, manufacturing, delivery, and support of 6000 units.
A whole lot of the pay tiers are limited.

I think it will be way past 1 million. Only couple of hours past and they are at 400k already.

Once the tiers fill up, I'm not sure how much they will get in only $10/25 tiers without any product to promise.
It's not like software KS efforts where they can offer unlimited digital copies of the product.

Pretty interested in the device, although as with most of these open source projects I am concerned with whether or not the thing will actually come out. Might chip in $100 at some point, I hope they do some more videos going over UI and things like that.

Isnt USD100 the actual final price of the Ouya? If they are making profit on that they can sell how many they want to. I guess.

I'm thinking they're keeping it limited for now because they don't want to get too much in over their heads...just in case things don't work out. There's a considerable amount of work yet to be done.

Also kind of wondering what revision of the Tegra3 this is running. That could have a drastic impact on overal output and performance.

Posted about this in the Halo Thread might aswell post it here aswell.

As a middle ground between handheld gaming and the big 3 home consoles the Ouya is perfect. At $100 USD its a perfect budget purchase and with the majority of indie titles in the market it could really excel.

Lack of major Triple A titles is not an issue at all, Many developers have spoken about how interested they are in making smaller budget titles and the Ouya is perfect for that.

If you could get Netflix and Other "TV replacement" apps running on it and/or use it as a home theater its going to be even more popular. The idea of somekind of budget HTPC thats prebuilt and easy to use is something i have family members looking for currently.

Really Really interested in how this turns out.

I pledged for a console but like others I am concerned if they will actually deliver the product at all. Do they have informative site at least? I can't find it on their kickstarter page.

All Sony needed to do was support linux homebrew on the ps3 and there would have been no need for this device. As for Android specific features I can already connect my phone to the TV. Its basically a mobile phone game player for the tv.

No point for me. I don't want mobile games on the TV and already use my PC as a media center. Cool though, hope it doesn't turn it into another Phantom-esque vaporware project.

So it's an Android platform that isn't portable...why would I pay $99 for this vs $199 for a Nexus 7?

It has a Dev Kit for the indie developer audience.
It's for the TV for the home console audience.
It makes an excellent and cheaper media center for that audience.
And it's going to be completely hackable for that audience.

I'd say if you aren't in either of those audiences, this probably won't be something you'd purchase.

I bit. I've wasted $99 on worse things. I was hoping that the SteamBox would come and fill the void of an open system. I'm still hoping for a SteamBox, but for only $99 why not?

I have a feeling we will start seeing more of these devices. I was kinda hoping that Nexus Q would be this device. The closed systems like XBLA stand to take the worst hit from these I would think. Why bother with a system that charges $40k for patches when you can release on this for free? Sure 'big name' indie games will still show up on the XBLA because of the large installed base of the xbox, but the little to no name, garage developers will be here. That's where were going to see the truly new innovations of gaming.

It's selling out fast.
This is reminding me of the Raspberry Pi pre-sale.

Hopefully whatever manufacturing deal they broker can keep up with demand.
No way quite like unavailability to hamstring momentum.

I wonder how things will go once the $99 tier sells out.

They'll still need a couple hundred thousand dollars to hit that 1 million mark.

Man, I hope this takes off. Console gaming needs to be saved with an affordable and open alternative, especially now that the old giants are falling away thanks to old ways failing in new days.

2 Zeebo duct taped together.

I'm not convinced this will actually become a product that is available for sale.

If it does, I'm highly skeptical that it will obtain retail distribution.

If it does, I'm certain it won't generate any new game software development for Android as a whole.

If it does, I don't think that development will be successful.

If it is, I expect that success will be short-lived.
Pretty much.

Im not sure I understand the point of this. Is it a media box? If its so hackable wont that hinder games? Plus I have a computer thats hackable, plays netflix, plays games. What should be selling me to buy this?

I can totally see them scrambling right now to increase the amount of consoles to manufacture. If they can manage it, this shit will sit up high in Doublefine/Wasteland nirvana.

Why buy any console for that matter? ;b

I'm not confident it'll take off in the mass market with the big three's hype campaigns rolling out over the next year, especially if current gen systems drop to a similar price range in the near future with their, lets say, more marketable AAA gaming offerings and robust libraries. Without that playerbase their whole 'revolution' goal kind of goes down the toilet, especially since they have their own proprietary store that has specialised requirements such as a mandatory F2P component and Ouya controller support. It looks like a good emulation machine at the very least.

For the games, and to me, the promise of a F2P Android based ecology is not appealing.
I'm not too big on F2P either, and hopefully they'll realize that pricing alternatives are nice. Some of those games they're touting would seem odd with a F2P structure, so maybe there's a hook we're missing.

Totally fine with Android. I think it's a swell platform, there are a good amount of quality games on the Android platform, and a Android based console gaining popularity would only benefit.

read somebody on twitter lamenting the tegra 3 is underpowered, he wants a amd trinity for pc and current gen console ports.

Not sure "current gen console ports" is the point of this system though. Seems more like bringing some mobile games to the TV and having other smaller games developed for it (XBLA style maybe).

Imagine how a Swedish guy would sound getting a really awesome blow job for the first time in years.

That's how you pronounce it.

Coffee is everywhere now, thanks.

Good to see that they put a touch pad on the controller, was wondering how that was going to work. I'll probably get one if they ever come out. Too bad that "hacker friendly" tech generally doesn't make it (phantom, gp2x).

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
This is pretty cool - Tegra 3 ? So even if the games suck, it will be at least a nice hardware for media play.

Never supported a kickstarter before - when exactly will they charge me ?

Once it ends in ~29 days. You can cancel/change amounts between then.

Those complaining about F2P - my understanding is you can still have a paid-for game, its just you HAVE to have a free-to-try demo. Pretty reasonable.
