Jason Dunford from Kenya! Hope he makes it. Who was the swimmer at Beijing who had never used the platform to jump in the pool? A shame that some of these countries don't have strong athletic programs but it's understandable I guess.

Don't get testy at me because your phrasing was terrible. Your first comment was full of salt. You took the negative route by saying I love when americans don't win swimming medals instead of saying I find it more exciting when the other countries swimmers win. negativity vs positivity, making you look bitter. I think I understand salt better than you.

EDIT: point proven

Your two statements are very contradictory

To be salty, to me is whenever you lose and are mad. I definitely wasn't salty, but ok - sorry if I made it look like I was salty.

You are super salty. "I take great pleasure when the USA loses."

Acting like a silver medal winning Russian gymnast you are.

About an hour ago everyone there was a lot of people riding Lochte for coming 3rd, and the justification for it was because he came across as a people of an arrogant so and so in his interviews. What's so different here?
Like I said, it's just in my nature to enjoy watching smaller nations with fewer medals like Netherlands pick up a medal here and there. US has a lot of medals, I'm sure Lochte probably didn't care about his Bronze all that much but to a different athlete it might be there only Olympic medal and will mean a lot to them throughout the rest of their life.

So... how come they put restrictions on the amount of medals that can be won by individual athletes in the Cycling but not in the swimming?

It seems odd. They also don't cover all events. They have a dedicated venue and only use it for 6 days.there is plenty of time/capacity to go longer to accept more athletes. 1 per country is crazy.

US : Swimming :: China : Indoor racquet sports

Both counties have sports they are dominate in. Don't understand why one is less valid than the other.

If people want to know the single biggest reason why the U.S. does well at the Olympics, it's our multiculturalism.

The diversity of the American population means that our society has a wide range of athletic interests, so we're pretty good at a lot of stuff. It also means we have a great deal of genetic diversity, which results in a lot of beastly athletes. (Hybrid vigor and all.)

Really disrespectul for people to call certain sports 'dumb' 3rd time I've seen it now.

Well this thread as always turns into ugly. Not really Olympic at all. This is why I prefer to eclipse myself when it happens.

Great volleyball match between Brazil - USA btw.

I feel so bad for our flagbearer fencer. She had to go home with nothing. Its no 06 bode miller situation, but it must still sting like a mofo. Blowing such a huge lead.

Most american athletes aren't overly arrogant.

Their fans may be sometimes (especially when posting anonymously on a forum) but that's largely unrelated to the athletes themselves.

Its not right to chastise an athlete based on what country they are from. This goes for chinese (lol they must be doping cuz they are chinese lol) and it goes for americans.

and also being a wealthy country that can provide it's athletes with world class training and facilities.

I don't care what your feelings are on US/China/GB/swimming/cycling, you have to agree that the different organisations need to get together and standardise their medal methods. Last Olympics the cycling org noticed this and scaled things back.

Maybe it's time someone had a word with the swimming committee too because they're devaluing the other sports.

Can someone explain fencing to me?

Are the hits and blocks and stuff manually recorded by a judge/ref? Is there someone watching that determines who got the hit and presses a button for the lights to go on?

What's up with the high tech headgear they have?

Saw this on Twitter. Good use of the difficult name of our Dutch winner (and only Ian Thorpe on the BBC pronounces it correctly, as "yo-yo"):

The light goes on when you get touched. It's automatic.

swimming has had a lot of events for forever why is it suddenly a problem when one dude is winning everything?

Uh...the U.S. is one of the only nations to have no public funding for the Olympic Games. Does private funding compare?

Team USA isn't hurting for money, they have a lot of corporate sponsors

You hit the right spot, you get a light. It's electronic, not manual.

You are probably correct, it's only a minority here whose comments make me feel this way. I still prefer rooting for less well represented nations.

Swimming (including synchronized)/diving is the (mostly) first half of the olympics equivalent to track and field. I don't see what's wrong with this.

edit: also, I don't think so many people would care if the US didn't dominate it. Some people just want to see the US lose.
