New Fire Emblem DLC announced

Haha, there was me ecstatic about a great game getting new and more varied DLC. The "returning characters" DLC was nice, but lacked variety unless there was a new class being offered.

While the fanservice does bother me a tiny bit, it all seems like a bit of fun to me and, besides, it's completely optional (but then, fans always complain about options, like Casual mode).

This game is supposed to take place 2000 years after Shadow Dragon, which was more traditional fantasy. I remember the developers saying at some point (Iwata Asks, maybe? I'm not sure...) that they wanted things to look different here due to that. One of the ideas they had early in development was even to make a futuristic FE. In the end, they stuck with the standard fantasy theme, but added more anachronic elements to the character designs.

Yeah, I think I remember that. I think that only again, makes it seem like a non-mainline type of entry, which seems to happen every few games in the series, just like Sacred Stones being an odd man entry. I won't mind as long as the next entry is a classic version.. and hopefully on the Wii instead of handheld.

They can make a futuristic FE and call it something else: Advanced Emblem? Fire Wars? Haha..

I am also still pretty miffed that they never brought FE: Heroes of Light & Shadow over.. especially after I slogged through Shadow Dragon. >_>

I'm also holding out for them to remake the Jugdral games, but I fear they'll pick an unsuitable artist and I'll be full of frustration yet againnn..

Well, for whatever its worth, I think Awakening owe a massive amount of its Japan sales due to the new art style. So on the virtue of keeping the franchise alive and bigger possibility of English version due to its success, I don't really mind the direction this game has taken in terms of art style.

Although yes, I do prefer the old style, but the new style is not without its charm, I think.

I prefer the old Lyn though........

Well, to be precise, that's what Lyn from Another World looks like. Vanilla Lyn is also playable in the game via SpotPass, whose portait reuses her original artwork.

On a similar note, I always liked how Awakening will let you have three different playable Marth characters: Prince Marth (Shadow Dragon), King Marth (New Mystery of the Emblem, yet to be released), and Marth from Another World.

How does Hector look like in comparison or he hasnt been featured yet?

I may have to buy this game twice. Once via DD, so can have it available all the time and again in physical form, because just gotta have it in physical form. FE 3DS may be my last 3DS game for a long time when it comes out. :lol

I really wish they'd let us install our physical copies of games on the SD card, it would be so good like that. Hopefully something like this happens when we get accounts added, but I'm not holding my breath.

He's not in yet and given that the DLC series promoting the returning characters has ended, it be pretty odd if they released more returning characters.

Haha, that is quite amusing. Recently I've been wondering if "Marth from Another World" is Marth before the events of Shadow Dragon (I'm kind of lazy to check the dialogue). Since "Prince Marth" and "King Marth" are both from another world, there's got to be something to distinguish "Marth".

Hector didn't get an "Another World Hector" version, and it looks like they won't be releasing any more of those in this new DLC. However, there's a standard Spotpass version of Hector using the FE7 artwork for his portrait. He has been reclassed into a general though (All past game characters appearing here are reclassified into a new standard class, aside from Marth, who got a new exclusive class, Star Lord).

If anyone is wondering, this is the full list of returning characters (These are the free Spotpass versions, which just use old official artwork, not the paid DLC ones which have new artwork. There are 13 paid DLC characters, but 120 free Spotpass ones, and every redesigned DLC characters is also available for free through Spotpass with their original designs):

I think people are forgetting that the DLC character art for the returning characters had to be designed to match the style of the classes in Awakening. So Lyn is wearing the Swordmaster outfit and Micaiah is wearing the Dark Mage outfit and so on, which is why they look odd. If there were to be an actual FE All-Stars game, they'd probably look more normal.

Except Roy. Roy's redesign is amazing.

Also, as impractical it would be, at least it doesn't look fucking stupid. What kind of dress is this?

Apparently it's an actual thing that women wore a long time ago. Someone on Serenes Forest said so.

I am also still pretty miffed that they never brought FE: Heroes of Light & Shadow over.. especially after I slogged through Shadow Dragon. >_>

You're not the only one.

The fan translation is almost complete!

That's what DLC is for.

No, that would be the third time paying for the game. :p The DLC is why I'm even considering a DD purchase of this. Have to have the cart, but once the initial play-through(s) is/are done, don't want it taking up the game slot. However do want it available for more DLC purchases.

Thats a shame, but I suppose a spotpass version is better than nothing! Thanks for the link.

you've been saying this for months but I still don't understand what you're trying to say.

If you don't understand how I feel FE2 (the actual Gaiden game) and FE8 (Sacred Stones) are not typical mainline Fire Emblem games (and I don't truly count Shadow Dragon and its sequel as mainline either since they are remakes), then you probably will never understand what I mean when I say Awakening doesn't feel like a mainline game. xD
(And perhaps it doesn't help that there's some kind of time-travelling and other questionable things like that involved on top of unfitting-for-the-series character designs)

The fan translation is almost complete!

I haven't been following with fanslating, but how high quality can I expect it to be? :I I want to be able to support the franchise through my purchases and importing and doing all the patching.. SIGH..
I'll get the game and play it eventually, but it's just so disappointing they never bothered localizing.

It might eventually bother me a bit if they continually and completely whore out every character, but the core gameplay has only improved upon a solid foundation and that alone means more to me than anything else. if this is what it takes to keep new Fire Emblems that are still Fire Emblem coming out (and to the West), then so be it.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Ah but that thread was a juggernaut, this can't compare.

Still how offended people have gotten over these small FE additions is a bit much, I mean really? there may be visible cleavage and manly abs (because shockingly this series contains men as well) in some optional content, ABANDON SERIES! NINTENDO LOST THEIR MORALS!
Can't say the arrival of the Beach and Hot Springs cliches are anything to really celebrate but hey there might be some humorous character conversations to come out of it.

I dont need humorous conversations from played out, pandering and not really ever that funny situations like the standard beach scene in a jrpg. There are plenty of other more interesting and less stupid places that could make use of humor.

This thread is basically the same as anime threads where people hate on the art style of new anime, despite old anime having tons of fanservice too.

And yeah, I hate the art style of new anime too, and I hate the art style of this game, but I can't claim "oh, it's the fanservice I hate, not the art style."

I hate the new artstyle of FE, old one was leagues better. As for the fanservice it's always been there but it wasn't as blatant as a bikini DLC mission. :|

So I hate both the new art and this over-fanservice.

Holy shit, if you don't like the OPTIONAL DLC then don't fucking buy it.

Why does it seem everything has a crusade against it on GAF these days?

Anyways, I don't even have a 3DS yet. This is basically the game that I was waiting for to get it and I will buy it when it is released since it's one of my favorite series. It doesn't mean I have to be happy about some of the changes.

because world maps apparently
World maps with exploitable wandering enemies and towers (not that arena abuse has never been an issue, but this is just compunds it), branched story paths (not that I truly minded, but ehh), extra unloackable content like characters (didn't mind), somewhat mooooore of a joke cast (if you don't understand my sentiment, then just give up on this. Lol), class branching (I kind of enjoyed it, but it didn't seem polished, plus reuse of MALE assassin sprite for females?? Come on..). Just the whole mashup of mechanics that seems like they were testing out!

There was just a lot of "things" that changed the overall experience from a typical FE game for me. I still played it and enjoyed it for what it was worth, but it's just not the same.

Again, if you don't get what I mean, then just give up. It's just my particular tastes and opinions and what I persoanlly as a long time Fire Emblem fan expect and enjoy.

Thankfully since it's DLC you have the option to ignore it and not purchase it.

And thankfully I can continue to discuss it in the appropriate discussion thread. Maybe you should leave the thread if this bothers you so much you gotta make an outrage post about it

Doesnt change that its a mainline game.

Pretty much. They're minor tweaks that for better or for worse change the game so it's not a literal rom hack. They add flavour that you might just not agree with but it doesn't change the fact that it's as mainline as all the others. And I understand even the point of the joke characters (Dozla and L'Arachel for example), but there's joke characters everywhere in the series, from horny monks to ugly archers. Hell I could make a more convincing argument as to why Blazing Sword isn't a mainline game than this.

It's perfectly fine that you don't think SS isn't as good as others and that this has a few elements that aren't your cup of tea, but it's not a spinoff of any sort.

Plus unlockable characters are part of FE6 and FE7 as well.

So you say. *shrug* It's not like I'm not calling it FE13 or refusing to call Sacred Stones FE8.
But I feel it's going to be another FE8 situation for me where this is an atypical FE, and I will be vinidcated in those feelings. XD

Seisen no Keifu was also pretty atypical (especially when you only consider the games that came before it) but people consider that one the best FE of all time? One of my friends loves the shit out of sacred stones's free exploration maps and considers it his favorite FE game.

You're missing the point. What you're saying about him not having to buy the DLC if he doesn't think he'll like it is true, but it's irrelevant to the fact that he has every right to express that opinion of his regardless of his intents.

That said...

That's surprising, didn't expect them to add in non main characters like units up for grabs with new artwork. That's pretty cool indeed!

Does this mean we are going to get at least a new non main character from each of the games now? :p If so, talk about going overboard with the DLC haha.

Maybe. It may be to early for me to say, but it could be possible that this will only be for the Ultimate Training series, which only consist of four episodes.

Here's hoping for more, though. I'm really a sucker for seeing more characters returning as DLC, minor or not.

Probably because it started the hooking up and baby making aspects. I mean COME ON.. baby making!!! Inheritance of skills and blood line stuff! Oh, and huge interconnected maps and crazy dark story aspects with the kidnapping-incest-rape-etc. I am glad they are bringing the offspring stuff back with Awakening.

Sacred Stones (and Shadow Dragon for that matter--btu for different reasons) just felt off to me.

I will look forward to it then!
