No problem !

I'm asking myself whether or not I should buy this... My only comp from two weeks on is going to be a MacBook Air and I'm not sure I want to bother with BootCamp for this.

Dammit.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Anyone know if the W-Item trick will still work or was that exclusive to the PS1-version or something?

This thread has been an interesting read. So to get more 'proper' music in the original PC release, one would need to get a Yamaha XG compatible sound card? I'm feeling like hunting one of those down now. Probably won't work with Windows 7 x64 though :(

No, there's actually a music mod out there that replaces the midi files with the proper PSX audio...that would be your best bet. I've never installed it personally, though.

My old PC didnt even have a sound card (well outside of whatever was inside the motherboard), it was just an option i had to choose before launching the game if i remember right.

the old PC version fixed it, so I believe it's just a PSX glitch, and most likely won't work on this version since this is a PC re-port
God damn it, oh well...

They wouldn't be re-drawn. Because they're not drawn. They are stills taken from 3D scenes, which, yes, if they still had the source around, would theoretically be pretty quick to do. But knowing Japanese developers, that stuff is all lost.

Actually a whole chunk of the backgrounds went through extensive 2D editing post-rendering. Also, besides soruces being lost, there's also the matter of having the sources around but in a format a modern pipeline can't read.

I installed the PSX music, the Fixed-Fixed music. Everything was fine until I went to the Chocobo Ranch and had the Chocobos dance for me, now we're stuck in an endless loop. Is it the music that's causing the problem, I've seen no one else report it as a bug.

Edit: I put the original music back and tried it again, this time it worked as intended so the problem is with the PSX music.

Finally :3! Aeris is my main character along with Cloud and Barret! Can't wait to see what new weapons she gets later on in the game!

All right I'm actually going to take a 2-3 break now (before you know what happens...

Don't end the disc without me!

I really hate how they give you this fantastic limit break which you will probably only be able to use once if at all. They could at least give you the option to get it earlier.

Temple of the Ancients looks terrible in this version because it's literally a big blurry picture :(

This is simply untrue. It was a more limited form (You needed at least two of an item to duplicate it, as opposed to selecting one item and then canceling the second) but it was still there.

So it's there in the PC-version as-well then?

Okay, after a bunch of testing, I got the PSX music to play through the entire intro bomb run, which would always crash before. The problem was the lack of the "LOOPSTART" Meta Tag in some files.

ob.ogg plays both in the very beginning when you get off the train and during the first boss (and the timed sequence afterwards.) Whenever it reached the end of its loop, the music crashed. I tested this by timing the loop against the length of the file. Once "LOOPSTART: 0" is inserted, the problem disappears. Some songs have LOOPSTARTs other than 0, but for those that didn't, it was probably assumed that it would just default to 0.

So here's the -Fixed- FF7 Fixed Music: http://www.gamefront.com/files/22130809/Fixed+FF7+Fixed+Music.zip
All songs without "LOOPSTART" have had them added.

Man, I respect you! THANKS!!!

I'll try this tonight when I'll be back from work and I'll give you the results of my tests.

Thanks you once again, thank you thank you thank you thank you.

I just can't stand anything that's not the original. ¬¬

Finally :3! Aeris is my main character along with Cloud and Barret! Can't wait to see what new weapons she gets later on in the game!

You, sir, have patience I do not possess.

I just see you making posts sometimes that are like "eh I don't need sleep, 12 hour gaming session here I come!" harmless joke :p
When I say that, I'm mostly serious about it. But it's not like I do this everyday though; only for big releases (yes, I consider every release of FFVII a big one :3).

I'm back from the break, disc 2, here I come!

FFFFFF--- you guys are making me want to start playing it, you know! I have to finish FF4 and my crappy final exams first. >_<

Dunno if I'll install the 1998 PC version and get the codec + mods or if I'll wait until the 28th for PS Vita support, though. I miss this game, sorta. When I went through it the first time, I was watching World Cup 1998 matches while playing the PC version. It was good times.

I always loved grinding in FF7, I really can't play the game anymore without grinding all limit breaks to at least the first of level 3 for every character as soon as you leave Midgar.
Actually I already started grinding again on the pathway between sector 5 and 6.
Hey, I do that too! Hypers make everything better.

I'm pretty sure the old PC version still had that glitch
This is correct and I've exploited it tons of times in the PC version.

I don't know if this 2012 version fixes it.

How badly did they botch this release? Is there any reason to pick this up if I have the PS1 and PC versions?

The resolution in this version is much improved over the previous, but the music is worse (people are trying to fix that).

I would say not really, unless you are really itching for an excuse to play through the game for like the millionth time again like I was.

Is the music actually worse than the original PC version? That one had MIDIs, if I remember correctly.

The default music in the 2012 re-release is pretty much the worst arrangement of FF7 music that exists. Luckily all the music .ogg files are located in a Data folder and can be replaced very easily.

Anyway to use the mods that were out for the origional release with this one? Also did the mods actually make that big of difference?

The characters and monsters (and anything made of polygons) look absolutely stunning imo. You can make out details on them that you could never really see with much clarity on the PS1 release. But the pre-rendered backgrounds look iffy, and the music sounds different. I think some songs actually sound better, some worse. It's kinda fun hearing a new variation tho.

As someone who has played thru the PS1 version many times, this feels like a new experience just because of the increased visual quality of Characters and Monsters.

Yeah, see, my first playthrough was on the original PC version, which sounds exactly like what you're describing. I played through again on PS1 because of the music, and then again on PSN just because I'm a big fan. I just find it so hard to believe that the music is actually worse this time around that the original PC MIDI soundtrack. At least it's moddable.
