Audio and visually the game could be a lot better. It seems they recruited really well on the gameplay design front, but they need to get a better handle on graphics, art and sound in the future

With audio as well, it should also correspond with what is happening in the match. The music should crescendo in the final ten seconds of the match so you know it's building to those last few moments

Okay guys favorite 2 characters, toss em out!

1. Spike - Gadgets. Love the all range ability. I like the whole style of not having the best supers but building meter really fast like Sweet Tooth. And not having any yellow pants monkeys in his moves means good things for alt costumes. Ape Escape is just hitting a nostalgia string for me at the moment.

2. Cole. He's a superhero. A SUPERHERO. Plus I love infamous.

*High Five* can't wait to play with him hope you can shoot off of melees like in his own game.

I got a collection of some of the character portaits

4ds8K.jpg

Some of them look really nice. What I would do to improve them though is:

I feel Sackboy should have a globe behind him. Cole looks like evil cole so they should think about changing his pic to something more happy looking . Radec's background should be black so that his eyes stand out. There should be stars behind Ratchet. Drakes should have slightly less black at the bottom. Maybe Heihachi's can have electricity and Big Daddy bubbles to show he's under water. Jak and Parappa's are both fine.

First time seeing the character select screen, and it's looking pretty solid. It looks just fine with just the colors. But if they add some stuff in the background, some of your suggestions sounds good like the sackboy one. For Radec though, they should add a Helghast Flag or a portrait of the helghan leader in the background. hah. And Ratchet looks a bit too angry in my opinion. Would like it to be something like this.
Ratchet1.jpg

It's only a minor complaint but I always saw Jak as the angry one and Ratchet as the more lighthearted one. But when I just googled ratchet and clank and some of his pictures he sorta does that expression a lot but with his teeth especially in the PS2 series but not so much on the Future series based on the covers.

I think the art and graphics look stellar. In particular the animations.

But I agree with the sound, the score (from what I've heard) could be a lot better.

Would have been just fine with something like this instead of them making all new songs...

Ugh, enough with the "Smash has this, so PBR should have it!" I understand that we all have lots of love for Smash, but this is SuperBot's game. Let them find their voice with PBR, then refine it and improve on it with a sequel. I understand wanting things like better audio and UI, and other visual effects for polish, but it should have those things because it will make the game better, not because Smash has it.

I want PBR to have it's own identity, and it does. Now it's at the polishing and refining stage. There will always be things that could be improved and tweaked, but at some point, SuperBot will have to say "Ok, here it is. It's the best game it can be given our time, budget, and talent." And release it. Looking at the latest videos, it's clear that they are really taking into consideration the feedback they are getting, as well as their own feelings of what should be changed and tweaked. I think this latest build is looking great, and they still have a full two and a half months before it goes gold and they can't make anymore tweaks to the game. There is still plenty more time for polish. It's exciting to see this game progress as well as it has. From its announcement a few months ago to now, the game has shown significant improvements. Especially the color palettes, bit that could have always been poor capture footage.

I'm quite convinced that Old Snake, Cloud, Crash, and Spyro would perfect the roster. All of which are true PS All-Stars. C'mon Superbot! At the very least, these 4 should be priority for DLC. Then Kat afterwards.

Having seen the Title Fight demo, I think they have not got to the level they could have

I feel like they really missed some of the visuals they could have attained. Especially the Jak and Daxter one. It really looks off.

Considering how far Metropolis has come from its first showing, dont think other levels wont improve as well.

Time Station, anyone?

I may not be completely in love with Spike's look (bring back that stupidly iconic red shirt, haha), but the right choice of music for his level can win over the rest of my nostalgia reserves. Its either Time Station (likely), Galaxy Monkey, or the main theme.

Also: do we know which voice actor they went with for him (Spike)? I know they were trying to go with each characters "classic" voice actor, but Spike has had a different voice in pretty much every appearance, and I haven't heard any particularly specific clips of his voice yet.

I'm sorry but Smash is this games most obvious competitor. You should want it to meet or exceed Smash in quality in as many ways as possible. Its just as worth while for people to say Smash has a better roster, more creative stage design, a better kill system and better audio and visuals as it is for you to gush over your Dante combos.

I do think PSASBR will have have better feeling controls and way better online play, but we've been gushing over this game for the majority of tens of thousands of posts, because most of us gave the game the benefit of the doubt and were surprised that the game controlled so wonderfully once we got the beta. But the initial hype from finally getting to play the beta has died off, and about 80% of the stages and characters have been revealed at this point, making it the perfect time to step back and see the ways that this game has been disappointing so far.

Saying that this game doesn't have to copy every element of the most popular game in the genre is true, but if you do something different then it needs to be for a good reason. For soundtrack it might be ok to not have hundreds of songs on the cd like smash, but for games that are known to have fantastic soundtracks, like LittleBigPlanet and Patapon, you have absolutely no excuse to not take the most popular track possible and put it in this game, either as a remix or a direct copy.

SO what do you guys think the competitve scene will be like for PSA?
Considering Melee and Brawl had pretty big scene's do you think PSA could just as well?
Hell they even have fight stick support which is a very nice gesture.

I could see it lasting longer than Brawl. Being more popular than Melee would be quite a feat.

The big step for this game to be competitive is to be included in the EVO 2012 roster. Sony is a usual sponsor of that event and I am sure they can add bonus prizes more than Namco, Capcom, or Atlus that can entice players to pick up the game.

The problem is that most FGC players are X360 owners

Not likely imo. :/ Even if Sony forces it. Whats the point? It will probably do more harm than good. You saw what happened at that brief appearance at this year's EVO right? :S

Yes, but I have read the impressions of people like Ultradavid who were in full praises of the game at E3 (the game came a long way in the past couple of months). I have trust in Superbot to make this game competitive.

Well, if the pot is huge...I think people are going to go for it.

Its going to be hard to say until we see a stock mode and more 1v1 and 2v2. My biggest worry is that the game punishes you severely if you go one punch over into a level 2. People are probably going to jump into pits before settling for a level 2, even in 2v2s in the way that this game is currently balanced. Though I think people will probably be good enough to push that level 1 out before it gets that bad, making it a non issue.

The second issue is if level one only play is fun enough for both viewers and players which it might be, but is still an issue to worry about. I also wonder if some characters are going to be far easier to combo into super than others, which could seriously harm balance.

Basically it is all just a big maybe.

What happened at EVO?

Well, I really hope so. :)

Yeah, Sony really needs to match or even one-up some of the biggest prizes--and announce it beforehand to have people start training up for it.

I remember the EVO stream, man was the FGC looking bad. "We missed Daigo for this???!"

The FGC also mostly hates Smash and pretty much everything really, so I wouldn't worry so much about it.

Yeah, I consider myself a part of the FGC, so it was pretty disheartening. Though I already knew they treat smash like crap as well.

To answer Chuck Norris' question:

When Superbot went to show off their game and the new characters, apparently a high profile match was going on off-screen for Street Fighter 4. Which was bad planning on the tournament organizer's part, but the stream chat really shat on the game for this reason.

What what? :S

People got mad that PSABR interrupted the Tekken stream iirc. Or an important fight, like a final or something.

Sure it isnt that big of problem, but it did generate some hate from other fighting games' fans. :/

Well even beyond the hate for Smash Bros in the FGC, this game gets a lot of hate from non fighting game fans too, as you've seen on Youtube and Neogaf. Honestly part of getting this into the eSports scene is getting past the hate from the general public.

And that is something that needs to happen, eSport or not.

I agree it's only natural to compare it to its competitors. Smash has set a high standard for the genre, and it's not like Superbot haven't been checking out other fighting games and seeing what works and how to refine and polish their own game.

That Uncharted stage looks really good. Easily the most visually interesting stage so far. I think they should've shown it off much earlier, like back at E3 when they revealed Drake and Big Daddy.

If you follow this link to Sainsburys' online store, you can buy the PS3 version for £30.39. Just make sure you use this code - SEGCON12 - when checking out. An absolute bargain for a game that we now know nets you a free digital download of the Vita version.

That's pretty good like! But what's the chances of Sainsbury's having the pre-order stuff? Because I kinda want the alternate costumes.

Saying that, have they announced the pre-order incentive for Europe?

That's not the point I was making. The point I was making is that if PBR is going to have elements of Smash, it should have them because it makes sense for PBR to have them, and it will make the game better. I don't want rig outs, or wacky sound effects, or bright, colrful settigs because Smash did it. I want those things because they make sense in the context of PBR and what SuperBot is aiming for with PBR.

I agree a lot with what you're saying, but I still think it's too early to comment on anything but the most superficial of thigs, because we haven't seen everything. The beta isn't the full game. We have absolutely no idea how this game has coalesced since the beta build. We don't know how much music, how many items, how many/what unlockables the game will have, what all the modes are, what the trophies are. We know nothing but a large portion of the roster, and some stages. Let SuperBot actually finish their game, then evaluate it for what it is on it's own merts, and not because of Smash. When Silent Hill debuted under the shadow of Resident Evil, many were doing the same thing to it as some are doing to PBR, but the series had its identity, and stood on its own. PBR looks to stand on its own, despite being clearly inspired by Smash. I think it's the wrong attitude to simply assume that SuperBot has done things differently from Smash just to be contrary. They clearly have a design philosophy at work, and a design document in place, based around the type of fighter they'd like to create.

The game is bound to not be perfect, no game is, but I'd like to see what SuperBot has planned, instead of armchair developing to them. If, during the remaining months of development, they take som elements from Smash and put them in PBR and they work, that's great, but at least let them make their game how they want. The last time the gamig community pressured a developer, we got Resistence 2 and the infamous Cole MacGrath debacle.

I really think this game can be successful competitively (FGC) because:

1) Its very accessible with its simple controls yet has deep strategy to it to figure out combos and hit to generate AP. Its easy to pick up

2) It will lure out Playstation fans who want to get successful in the competitive scene. I know for fact that one of the best clans in Uncharted 3 want give this game a shot.

3) It can potentially be liked by the Smash community and have those guys on board for events in the FGC

4) Its fun and there is nothing like it in terms of gameplay and strategy.
