Does GAF have a compiled list of must have titles do XBLA somewhere?
Some of my favourite XBLA games, in alphabetical order:
A Kingdom for Keflings: This is a non-violent RTS game; basically, the focus is on building your base and efficiently harvesting resources. It's very cute, very fun, and very very different. I think the sequel, World of Keflings, is actually a little bit better on the overall, so you might find you're better off choosing that, but I like to play series in order if I can. (Also on PC, but not on Steam)
Bastion: This is a top-down hack-n-slash/action RPG. People give it a lot of praise because of the narrator, but that's not really why I love it. I think it's great because it introduces new concepts every few minutes so you constantly feel like you have something new to try, and because it does such a good job of building its world even if the level design itself isn't up to snuff. It's also gorgeous (Also on Steam)
Braid: This is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer where most of the puzzles involve time in some way. In the first world, you can rewind time, and the mechanics grow out logically from there. The art style is very unique and also very pretty, with great music as well. (Also on Steam)
Carcassonne: This is a classic board game that got an excellent XBLA adaptation. Unfortunately at this point the online community is a little bit dead so you might not get your money's worth in that respect, but as someone who loves the board game, this is a really great port. (Also on iOS) Of the other board game ports; Catan is, I feel, not a particularly good port, while Ticket to Ride is an excellent port. The online community for all three are dead.
Double Fine Happy Action Theatre: Basically a Kinect interactive screensaver that you can play around with. Awesome to put on at a party, people just make total idiots of themselves. It's not really a game. Try the demo, anyway.
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved: This is the granddaddy of the modern twin-stick shooter. Excellent, pulsating visuals, really fun core gameplay loop, and the embodiment of the XBLA experience for me. Only $5. (Ports to PC, Wii, and DS are all sub-par, buy it here)
ilomilo: This is a gorgeous 3D puzzle game. You control two dudes independently and the objective of the game is to navigate them through the levels to meet up with each other somewhere in the middle. You can freely switch between guys. Often times they won't quite be able to meet up but will still be able to help each other by bridging gaps. Gorgeous, hilarious sense of humour (think WarioWare in terms of humour?), lots of content.
Lazy Raiders: This is a single-screen 2D puzzle game. You play as your Avatar or the game's hilarious Dr. Diggabone. Your character can't move; instead, you rotate the level around your character and s/he tumbles through the level. You collect loot, try to finish levels quickly, bypass obstacles, etc. The levels get pretty tough for a game that centers around such a totally basic mechanic. 75 levels, it'll take you a while to get through.
Minecraft: I think this is an excellent port of Minecraft, and the improvements in how they display recipes and the use of the Gamepad more than make up for lacking most of the recent, superfluous Minecraft PC features. I'm sure you know what the game is--it's a very light action-RPG built around lego-style construction, free exploration of a huge randomly generated world, resource gathering, and crafting. Very fun in split-screen as well. (Also on PC, obviously, although not Steam)
Peggle: Peggle is a game that most obviously resembles Pinball or Pachinko, but has a slick, friendly, appealing, and engaging presentation on top of it. Every shot that you screw up makes you feel bad, every good shot makes you feel awesome. A lot of people claim Peggle boils down to luck, but there's a reason why some people are higher than the leaderboard than others--it actually does have a reasonably high skill ceiling and requires judgment and practice. (Also on every other platform on earth)
Shadow Complex: Shadow Complex is probably the best western take on the exploration platformer / Metroidvania game type. Great level design, fun to use (and different!) powerups, lots of potential for speedrunning, several difficulties, neither too long nor too short the first time through, and great looking. Bosses are a little disappointing though.
Super Meat Boy: The genius of Super Meat Boy is simple; it's not a game being too hard that turns people off, it's the way games structure failure. You will die--thousands of times--but because each time you die you'll only lose a few seconds progress and the restarting process is instant, you'll feel empowered to try and try again until you get through the level. It applies this concept to an absolutely MASSIVE platformer filled with levels and mechanics and unlockable content. I don't really like the game much visually and the music grates on me after a while, but from a gameplay perspective, one of the best pure games on any current gen system (Also on Steam)
The Adventures of Shuggy: This is a 2D puzzle-platformer where you play as a little vampire dude. Each set of levels is a totally different mechanic; in one you might be able to fly, in another just jump, in another you use Braid-style time rewinding abilities, in another you have a bungie cord, in another you can't move and can only rotate the level, in another you're constantly moving like a zombie and can just control jumps. Tons of variety. Low budget presentation, though. One thing that's cool about it is that it has a totally separate co-op campaign with all new levels. (Also on Steam)
The Maw: The Maw is a family-friendly 3D platformer. You control an alien dude who walks and jumps around. He has a little... uh... dog blob thing ("the Maw") with him that he can shout out to. The Maw eats enemies and scenery and transforms into other forms and basically just helps you get through levels. It's not hard and it doesn't require much precision, but there are some really fun puzzles. The thing I like best is that with each passing level, the Maw gets larger... and larger... and larger... until... well, you'll see if you play the game. Trust me, it's worth it. (Also on Steam)
Torchlight: Imagine Diablo 1's premise of deep-diving one huge dungeon, mixed with Warcraft 3's visual engine, with a loving layer of polish and a little on the easier side. It's the best non-Diablo dungeon crawler I've ever played. Yeah, it's a little broken, and it's a little samey, but when you have that loot urge, I feel like it's a really good game to play to scratch it (Also on Steam)
Uno: It's an excellent port of Uno. With Xbox Live camera support. If you have a female avatar, be prepared to see penises. Has by far the grossest community of players, if you can believe me. (Also on everything else, but I understand this is by far the best version)
I think I've played demos of at least 80-85% of XBLA, and I own well over 100 XBLA titles, especially if you include PC versions as well. So if there's any game you're wondering about, maybe just ask.
Besides the above-mentioned games, I also liked the following at least a little bit: 'Splosion Man, Ancients of Ooga, Anomaly: Warzone Earth, Apples to Apples, Axel and Pixel, Banjo-Kazooie, Beyond Good and Evil HD, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Castlevania: SOTN, Chime, Cloning Clyde, Comic Jumper, Costume Quest, Crimson Alliance, Deadlight, Doom, Doom II, Doritos Crash Course, Duke Nukem 3D, Exit, From Dust, Fruit Ninja Kinect, Half-Minute Hero Super Mega Neo Climax, Hardwood Backgammon, Haunt, Hexic HD, Hole in the Wall, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Iron Brigade, Joe Danger: Special Edition, Joy Ride Turbo, KrissX, Limbo, Luxor 2, Marble Blast Ultra, Mercury HG, Monkey Island 2, N+, Orcs Must Die!, Outland, Pac-Man CE, Perfect Dark, Puzzle Quest, Quarrel, Raskulls, Rock of Ages, Rocket Riot, Roogoo, Scene It? Movie Night, Schizoid, Sea Life Safari, Small Arms, Snoopy Flying Ace, Space Ark, Space Channel 5 Part 2, Space Invaders Extreme, Stacking, The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom, Trials HD, World Gone Sour, Worms
My tips is to remove Schizoid and Gyromancer from that list, unless they drop to like 160MSP. Schizoid kinda blows and Gyromancer deserves a lashing for pulling that day 1 unlock key DLC bullshit.
I actually like Schizoid. It's not the best possible execution of its idea, but I think the idea is very cool. Both the pacifist twin-stick shooter, the cooperative-two-ship stuff, and the "holy shit, single player co-op my brain is melting" mode.
