Final Fantasy Dimensions |OT| FFV's Job System returns! (Try before you buy!)

AP =/= JP though.

AP will increase your job level but it would eventually cap and requires JP to unlock in the original.

JP are still in according to this shot.

This sounds stupid. Part of the reason why the FF5 job system was so good was because it let you mix and match abilities and max out whatever jobs you wanted, not put a cap on the stuff you can use. :/

Still waiting on any word on this getting on the US Play Store... sigh.

Actually I don't think it's that bad since this stops the everyone-ends-up-the-same thing FFV (and FFXII) had. And you can still mix and match abilities! But now each ability uses a certain amount of slots, and how many slots you have depends on your Job Level.
Also, the game is still down everywhere on every service... I wonder why they even took it down in the first place.

I hope this goes up on the US store in 7 minutes.

Annd… it didn't.
I'm thinking there was either a mistake at Apple and they put the game up too early when it was actually supposed to come out at around the same time as the first of the FF 25th anniversary stages goes live, OR a terrible game-breaking bug was discovered.

But he has a point. Part of the fun of both games for me is to make game really good characters and here you can't easily. Moreover, if you use your JP on a not so good job you wasted them. Acquiring more slots requires using JP on a job too...

I also don't like how some jobs are restricted to either the light or dark team. Can all of the 8 heroes use all the jobs after they meet up in the final chapter?

Just downloaded this and eager to try the prologue. Hopefully it impresses me and I might bite on the ridiculous price. So far the font and some of the flash looks annoys me. I also prefer the original version of the battle theme but it is still badass.

This game seems all right! Not done with the prologue yet, but probably pretty close.

+ Feels like an old-school FF. Stuff like walking through walls in towns/castles, classic FF enemies and, of course, all the standard stuff you'd expect in a FF game.
+ Auto-attack command is fast. Think SMT/Persona. You also retain the setting between battles until you turn it off.
+ Touch controls in battle seem to work well.
- D-pad is not very responsive so I usually walk past my location. Moving around in towns and trying to talk to people is not very fun. Going through menus to heal is like 5-6 taps, which is normal for a game on a controller but feels cumbersome on a touch screen.
- Encounter rate seems kinda brutal in dungeons -- but it's an old-school FF game so maybe that's okay.

Will probably buy the first chapter when it's working so I can see the job system. That'll be where the game lives or dies.

Just like some have already said standard generic Final Fantasy. The controls work although I am a bit annoyed by the way to issue a command on opening chests (or talking!) which is a bit clumsy. However I like that the virtual controls fade into the background when not using it. Music is good enough with Victory Theme and Battle being the best so far. The monster encounter is high and the enemies don't show much mercy to my surprise (I should of course tone down the battle speed as the touch interface takes time to get used to). However you get frequent easy access to new items and weapons in dungeons so the difficulty balance isn't that bad (no FF game has been this generous early with items in dungeons). I just beat the first boss which was not bad, but I have yet to get introduced to the job system. The writing is bland and characters uninteresting so far. Still not crazy about the game yet but we shall see if it gets better.

What do you mean just the US? The world isn't divided between just Japan and the US.

Meant to type NA instead of US, but I meant that the EU and JPN droid markets get a droid version while NA only gets iOS. At least, as shown by the game still not being up and how the English webpage only says iOS.

Edit: I should stop posting and go to bed, yeesh. Will wait a day or two before jumping to conclusions.

This is really nice. Anyone know if there's a negative to having Auto Mode on for grinding etc? Like, less exp maybe or something.

It isn't up on the European Android Market either.

Okay, beat the prologue. Holy crap, they really go out of their way to sell you on the rest of the game at the end. It's like a trailer for the game, practically.

Come on, Square, let me spend my money.

I'm just downloading now. How long did it take to beat the prologue?

How did we go from Square having some of the best art design in the industry to this current situation with comically mismatched sprites and art styles?

So is there some sort of time period that they have to wait before they can put the update up? I don't really follow iOS gaming very closely. I really want to purchase the rest of it already.

Nope. Ghost Trick launched with the whole game intact. This is just Square messing up. I imagine they're rushing to patch it, so as soon as the patch is available and approved, we'll see it. Should be pretty soon.

Err, yes I know. They say right on the store that they have to update the game first. So my question was: Are there any Apple politics that will keep them from releasing an update to the game quickly (like within a day), or anything of that nature?

If I recall correctly, they can request a rush on the update that might let them put it out quickly, but it's up to Apple to decide if they want to do that.

I'm immensely surprised to find that I agree with the above: the art honestly is quite fine when playing on an actual iPhone. I've only messed around for about 20 minutes with the prologue, but the battles control nicely and the art is clear and simple. Maybe a little pedestrian in art style, but it's not as grody-looking as when I saw the screens blown up on a big screen. Is this universal? I'm wondering how I'd think of the art on iPad.

I'll definitely finish the Prologue and check out the first chapter once the IAP actually works. :p

Only played for about ten minutes, but the music is great and the game doesn't look nearly as awful as the screenshots imply. Looks just fine in motion.

Unless the prologue turns to shit by the end, I might actually grab the full game.

Anyone tried to play this on Nexus 7? I downloaded the apk from the JP Square enix market but as soon as I launch the game it crashes :(

I played it on my iPad 3 up until I named the first two characters. The game itself looks like it's a retina iPhone game running on the iPad in 2x. It's locked in the iPhone's 3:2 aspect ratio and there are bars on the top and the bottom.

The other thing is the app either doesn't support fast app switching or it eats up a lot of RAM because I switched from the game to Safari and back again and had to completely start over (iPad has a 1gb of RAM).

Just grabbed this on my iPhone. The universal app is a little confusing though. Will my in app purchases transfer over to my iPad?

If you're using the same App Store account for both your iPhone and your iPad, you should be able to restore your purchases on the other device.

I'm fine with that. The entire concept of the game is a nostalgia grab - no need to limit that to just the gameplay. Honestly, if they pay homage to entire plotlines from previous games, I'd be fine with that too.

Argh come on Square I want to play with some job system

Just finished the prologue. I was surprised by how boring the story and characters are. Even more surprising are the controls; instead of a standard virtual d-pad there are 5 buttons (1 in the center)!!! Worst controls I've experienced in an iOS game. The fast automatic battles are a nice addition, but it's a shitty game.

There is none, it works just like it did in FFIV DS and FFIVCC.

I hope SE manages to release the update soon, I want to give them my money :/.

Music is nice but I really don't like the touch controls. In battle I often tap the wrong thing when tapping quickly and it's annoying on my Ipod Touch. The game is also fairly ugly even on that small screen.

I also laughed at how the final save point tells you must pay to play the rest of the game. Pretty funny the game is borked and that you can't buy anything. It also appears you must buy songs to complete the "arranged" soundtrack.

On the bright side, it appears to be much better than that awful FFIV sequel. Hopefully it doesn't make you go throught he same dungeon 4 times like The Years After. If it didn't have a job system I wouldn't even bother paying 30$ for this.

You do realize that the standard virtual d-pad is an option in the menu, right. Though I don't get how the controls are "bad" in the first place.

but it's a shitty game.

Because it has a slightly different way of controlling it? That's really stupid.

I honestly quite enjoyed it. It doesn't seem to suffer from any of the problems I had with FF4 TAY so far. I really want the other chapters. :( Was hoping to play through it this weekend, but who knows when they'll get the update up?

I played around with the dpad, and oddly enough I've settled on the static positioning as being best for me, which I didn't think would be the case. I actually do agree about the dpad having a dead zone in the middle: that's pretty stupid and it makes controlling a bit more awkward. It's probably not as big of a deal on the iPhone as it is on the iPad, though.

It's odd, I've read of a lot of people who hate how this game controls but I find it really responsive and it actually makes me really happy that they give you the option of having a static d-pad always on screen OR one that appears wherever you tap whenever you tap.

The positive impressions are really good to hear. Especially after most people went "lol RPG maker" and despised it from the get-go. Mines almost downloaded and am gonna see what I think.

Man, am I really getting a brand new 2D Final Fantasy game in the same vein as FF V? This is pretty cool!

Wrong. With that option there's a "hole" in the middle. If you press there nothing happens. Have you ever played a game with worse controls?

Don't waste your time with this.

Don't get too hyped - it's fun for what it is, but there's an obvious caveat there. The story doesn't seem to be charming or memorable in the way that FF4-6 are, and I doubt it has the level of craft and care that those games had since it's such a teeny sideproject on a mobile platform. I hope that it does blossom into something special, but I think people are more surprised that it's fun than saying that it's really great. It's always hard to tell after the first hour, especially when the main gameplay mechanics have not been touched on yet. It'd be like saying FF5 is great after doing the pirate ship.

I think my biggest problem with the controls is how fast you move. I'm often walking past where I want to go because touch controls are so unresponsive.

For 2D Final Fantasy I will take what I can get. I even liked FF IV TAY. But i'll try not to get too hyped...which I should play it now that my download is complete.
