i remember reading that Samsung has patents on LTE.. wonder what it means if it goes to court

Apple has been hoarding LTE patents in a bid to head off a possible legal attack from fierce rival Samsung on its forthcoming iPhone 5, according to reports from Korea.

Apple has gone from holding zero LTE patents last year to having 318 filed away today. That's around five per cent of the world’s total

Samsung has the largest share of the patents on the planet with 819 (12.7 per cent)

Anything LTE related will generally fall under FRAND so its not as exciting.

Here's a horrid illustration to show what I mean:

The new position seems far more natural.

Not unless you've got the ear buds on your balls. Draw the full person view :)

Dat unibody. No separate back piece since it's all machined with the frame now.

People thought otherwise? The first frame leak was obvious.

I don't get the hate when it comes to having the headphone jack at the bottom. It's much better there because it provides less stress on the base of whatever headphones you use. There's literally no good reason to have it at the top.

Yup, we already knew this. Still doesn't make the glass pieces (not present in that pic) any less ugly.

Also, seems like front still sports raised glass, unlike the back. Not nearly as much as before, of course.

Yup. We went round and round on this a while back (you and I with others that is). I am prepared to eat partial crow however, I said it would not be flush (it isn't) which I thought was unfortunate but I expected more of a lip.

This is the best picture of the display assembly in the housing we have seen yet IMO.

Bummed it's not flush, stoked its not 4/4s raised which would not vibe with the new back.

I hope the fully assembled phone is 25%-33% thinner like that unibody breakdown article states. That, combined with the light weight, longer form, and strong frame will make it feel glorious in the hand.

I think there's a chance it will be flush fully assembled

Yup. It's actually one of the biggest bullet points for the iPhone NEXT for me.

I have my phone in the front pocket of my jeans with the headphone plugged in, it's going to be clumsy on the bottom. Unless I put the in phone upside down.

when did it get so bright?

? The color of the frame you mean?

That is the white iphone frame (you can see the white plastic spacer between the cell antenna and back plate and around the charging port port). They just have a black display assembly on it.

The black iphone frame will be the darker one.

edit:

Look at it the other way. The only reason you aren't putting it in upside down now is because of your headphones. If you put the phone in your pocket upside down then it is right side up when you take it out and hold it normally.

I mean the iPhone 4 had the damn phone out in the wild, but it seems like there are WAYYY more leaks this time. Didn't Cook mention something about cracking down on this? Seems almost impossible in this day and age though.

I figure this is the best place to ask..is there any way to set my homescreen as the default "unlock" option? My home button is broken on my 3G and this seems like my only option

Two things

1. If the headphone jack is on the bottom then how do you sit it on a IPhone desk dock and listen to music at the same time?

2. Those speaker grills are incredibly ugly. As someone who keeps their phone on silent and uses headphones for everything else it just looks way too overstated.

1.The iPhone docks have their own audio out plug. Always have.

2. To each his own.

I think the best pic was left out earlier:

sexy

Edit: still don't think it's fully assembled. Glass sticks out too far.

Hopefully iOS 6 also comes out the same day the iPhone Next is released. Really want to get my hands on it and see if the GPS maps are valid for a Virgin prepaid iPhone.
The GM almost certainly will be released on the day of the press event, looking at how previous releases worked.

Lol thanks. I never thought to plug my headphones into the port on the back. I just assumed that was for connecting to audio receivers etc. I'm back on the bottom headphones train now.

I don't get 'the bottom is ugly' remarks. That's arguable the only sexy thing about this. Even with the grill asymmetry, it's quite nice. Also, it loves you.

Same here, but then again if you look at how raised it is in comparison to the 4S, it's still quite 'flush'. Just not as much as the back plate, which makes it oddly (but subtly) asymmetrical edge-on.

It'll feel great in-hand flush or not, but hopefully you're right..

when did it get so bright?
You can see from the side antenna bands that it's the white model, which explains the bright metal. The black one should be charcoal black all around. Anodized iPhone?

I don't think there is, though I'm sure you could get something like that if you were open to jailbreaking it?

Regarding the boot video, can anybody read what it says after the iPhone 5 boots up?

I think it say "We're unable to complete you" at the top and that makes no sense at all.

Actually those are line out ports and don't have proper amplification for headphones. There's no volume control. It's 1Vrms constant.

So plugging in headphones while a phone is docked would require either a new dock that uses the headphone out and passes that along OR a separate headphone amp after the line out (if the audio signal is coming from the dock connection, bypassing the internal amp)

Oh, I didn't realize you were talking about headphones. The port on the back of the dock is line out. I run it through a Tivoli radio. I've never tried it with headphones.

This phone will require a new dock anyway. You'll have to wait and see.

I've tried it with headphones back when the original iPhone came with the dock packed in. It worked fine.

I wonder if they will end up like the speaker grills on earlier Macbook Pros - full of all sorts of random shit. I don't think they're bad looking though, but I think they will have crap in them.

Apple dropped the ball on the design. If the Keynote doesn't sell me on it, I'm getting the next iteration of the Samsung Galaxy.
If it ends up looking something like this,
3d-render-iphone-5-metal-back-4.jpg

rather than something like this,
real-i-phone-5-pic-1.jpg

then I think i'll be alright. The light aluminum on black glass is really unappealing, though. Charcoal is, dare I say, sexy.
