Can Google Voice be used on Android tablets so that it functions as a phone? So I can make and receive calls to my Google Voice phone number? Really not a lot of experience with Android, but it would be cool if the Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab could take incoming calls while my cell is charging.

So sick of hearing a song (in Australia btw) and not being able to jump on my phone and download it. Seriously considering switching back to Apple's ecosystem.

There seems to be no rush from Google to make their major services (Voice, music etc) available outside the US.

The Nexus 7 is great but again, so bloody frustrating. Lack of TV shows, no real decent and simple streaming solution ala Apple TV. I really don't want to go back to Apples ecosystem as I like Androids freedom but I am concerned that Google aren't giving dates on these items because they are an age away.

Yes, and no.

You can set up a SIP (Voice over IP) and have it channelled though the tablet. The easier alternative is to have Voice installed and when you want to make a call it will just ring your cell/home phone and you continue the call from there.

There's a couple of people here that are more fluent with SIP/VOIP setups.

You'll have to download GrooveIP or Talkatone. Try both and see which works better for you.

Thanks for the responses. Strange that you can't just use Google Voice. I thought that was part of the idea behind that initiative

I think everyone believes the only reason GV doesnt allow you to do it straight up, is because Google has to maintain a relationship with the phone carriers of the world. They wouldnt like it if all you had to do was buy a phone, then use GV on it for infinite minutes everywhere. Nor if you could take a phone with no service and make and receive calls anywhere WiFi was available bypassing phone carriers altogether.

I reckon Google wont ever directly step over that line and onto the carriers toes. So we will just have to use the Apps that bridge that gap in the meantime.

I've kinda stopped buying music for that reason - I pay for streaming stuff instead like MOG which doesn't count toward my data and you can store songs locally, so it's basically replaced my music library. If I ever do want a paid track, can usually find it at 7Digital for about the same price as iTunes. I'll agree though, Google's support outside the US fucking sucks. No idea what they're doing or if they're even interested in competing internationally (despite selling their hardware everywhere).

nobody ever gives dates on those kinds of things, at least not until the date is really close. why? well, because the main obstacle is local rights negotiation with whoever has the rights for all those things in the country. the infrastructure is already in place and it's just about legal negotiations and can they make a profit on the current terms being offered, etc... you'll never get a date until all the deals are signed, which means it's almost time for launch.

if you want "right now", then go with Apple. get your new iPhone, iPad 7" and Apple TV later this month.

Try Music Unlimited from Sony. It has a very, very wide track selection. The app is available through Play and I think they give 60 days of premium for free for new subscribers. It also launched in Australia late last year.

The AOSP project is rather intriguing.

I can't help but think they are doing it to set an example for other companies *cough HTC/Qualcomm/Verizon* in order to get them to participate.

With Samsung they've been able to convince them to contribute most bits without issue behind the scenes.

Super cool to see CM get a nod on the Sony Blog.

My mum has recently purchased an Acer Iconica Tab and she wants to be able to watch some Cantonese drama (TVB) on it.

Now are there any apps or websites that can make this possible?
She would like to watch the stuff from the TVB wwebsite, but that has IP detection so if you reside outside of Hong Kong, its blocked.

We’ve seen a lot of images of an (alleged) iPhone coming soon with a bigger screen, and some numbers out from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the WPP-owned market analysts, underscore how a bigger iPhone may not be coming a moment too soon. In the last 12 weeks, it found that Android-based smartphones have continued to extend their lead over the rest of the pack, and the charge is being led by the big boys — literally.

Of all the Android devices that have been sold in the last three months, nearly one-third (29%) of them had a screen size of over 4.5 inches, with large-screened devices from Samsung, HTC, LG (pictured), Huawei and more. Apple’s current iPhone has a screen of 3.5 inches.

Kantar also found that Android’s market share in Europe has gone up by 20.2% in the past year; its devices now account for two-thirds of the smartphone market in Europe. In fact, as you can see in the table below, Android grew its share by double-digit percentages in just about every major market, except for the U.S., where it actually declined by 4.5% as iOS increased by nearly 9% over the same period a year ago.

Still, the U.S. appears to be an outlier at the moment (if not marching to the beat of a different drum altogether). Overall, there is not a single market among those surveyed by Kantar where Android does not have over 50% of all smartphone handset sales and is still growing stronger than the rest. And in some markets like Spain that percentage is even approaching 90%.

Across the eight most important markets, Kantar notes that Android has a share of 61%; while iOS is at 24%; and the rest all have 5% or less, led by Windows.

Going beyond straight handset sales, Kantar also takes a look at screen size and how that form factor impacts consumer behavior — the chief takeaway here being that the larger the screen the more likely a consumer will use that device for different services. (And if you think about long engagement times on something like the iPad tablet as the extreme of what happens when you have a large screen, this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.)

“It is interesting to look at the impact a larger screen size has on how consumers use their smartphones, particularly as the line between tablets and smartphones becomes more blurred,” analyst Dominic Sunnebo writes.

This seems especially true for services that need more input from a user, or rely on visual elements. ”Only 19% of consumers with a screen smaller than three inches download and watch videos, compared to 65% when the screen is five inches or more,” he writes.

Dropping pictures and video into a conversation when I use iMessage is a luxury compared to my nexus. Google needs to drop that universal messenger that's been rumored for a while this fall.

From what I read about that Apple uses a non standard implementation when sending texts. And Android only uses standards. That's why we have apps that are written to accommodate non standard Apple usage, but not integrated officially in stock Android.

That's the way I understood it, it may be wrong, and if so I would like to understand it better.

My buddies Razr Maxx handles group messaging fine out of the box! It makes me sad, but Motorola is gonna have to impress me more to get away from Nexi.

I can't help but think this thing sucks the way it does because of media companies.

Apparently Google TV doesn't support NDK. That means XBMC is out of the question. Games that rely on the NDK aren't going to work. Explains why n64oid doesn't work. So shitty.

So why does Google tv not support NDK?

Google TV was the first Android derivative to support Chrome. In order to pull that off there was a technical need to not use Bionic (tool chain compatibility). This means we currently cannot support NDK. We are actively working on this and understand the frustration you feel on the matter. Please be patient as we work to resolve this and know that we are just as excited at the possibilities that can be unlocked by having NDK support on Google TV.

Hey fuck faces, you have chrome running on ICS and beyond on devices that....wait for it...support the NDK. So what the fuck?

I have no idea what that Bionic thing is, and maybe one of the devs on here could fill me in, but this sounds like bullshit.

I'm loving and hating the CoStar at the same time. The bluetooth remote is a bit unreliable. The thing is laggy to hell on some screens, and smooth as butter on others. Like I told gcube, I'm being super optimistic about it getting an ICS/JB update rectifying all this.

Also, fuck you ACER for not providing me with an IR Code for my projector. You're assholes. Vizio support is surprisingly being more helpful into looking into it than Acer themselves.

Meh I have like 5 different things with the same functionality already plugged in to my TV, the only interesting thing about Google TV is the overlay ability.

I'd rather spend 99 at the bar.

I think any possible Android games sytem would have to have a tegra chip in it for the best possible compatibility with the latest games...

I mean right? Nvidia are the only ones focusing on games support, exclusivity, optimization for their chip, etc...

i dunno that's what i'm thinking.
