First Look at NEW RoboCop Suit

I'd watch that.

The first film is a perfect satire of its time, if you are going to remake it change it radically. And if you change it radically you better make sure you have the freedom to deliver it.

I wonder if that's why Aronofsky bailed on attempting it.

I agree with this. I think pandering to two different crowds for the film, the old fans and potential new ones, hurts the creative process.

Also, when you have all the cops wearing black, a black cop car and all the black weapons ... WHY ON EARTH would you make a robot that looks like a trash can ?

OF COURSE it would be Black !

It would be like Apple showing the first information of the new iPhone and suddenly it is ORANGE

Robocop is now of military design. The military has turned Detroit into a police state I believe and use the program to police it.

Where is the visor ?????
It is the iconic part of the characteeeerrr !!!!

Also this

I always wondered how they made it look like his face was plastered onto a robotic head.

Am I the only one who thought that outside of the back-of-the-head makeup and maybe the shoulder joints, that the original RoboCop looked exactly like a dude in a 1980s sci-fi armor suit and not "OMG A REAL ROBOT"?

Also, ED-209 is supposed to look stupid. The original was literally a parody of dumb-looking Detroit sports cars designed by out-of-touch executives of the 80s, this one is clearly a parody of sharp-angled modern military shit like F-22s and drones and stealth boats and choppers that are super expensive but of questionable reliability.

Again, that's missing the point.

OCP was incompetent, but thought they could move into another market. A military organisation moving into cities implies them just not giving a fuck. Which you'd have to make the satire far darker to achieve the same message as the original which was just consumerism.

In this and even in the other set shot he looks like a robot.

Anyway I'm still gonna wait for the trailer before judging too much, but it's almost hopeless, I doubt that without Verhoeven this can be any good.

He looked like a computer out of a 90s sitcom. There was nothing badass about the design. Functional, yes. Badass, no.

Now I don't disagree that this suit doesn't have that same functionality, but I'm willing to wait until we've seen it under the right context.

My man.

Yes, because comparing it to things from the decade after it was made is a convincing argument.

The design was incredibly striking, it's iconic. And the film made a LOT of waves with the violence, and people not knowing whether to take it as an action film, satire or black comedy.

My class was actually shown a pirate copy of it in school as a debate on violence in films, with him pausing the video to ask why people laughed in places. He thought it was a despicable film :)

While I like the design, there's not enough ROBO about it. Maybe seeing it in action will be different but the old suit was almost instantly recognizable as partly robotic, even if in cheesy ways.

Also, not enough metallic elements. Should look more like that concept art that was going around a while back.

Nope, it's called being reasonable not crazy judgemental based off a set picture.

That's right, bold a sentence to ignore the wider point which was being replied to.

And we aren't basing it on just that, are we. Diving into threads complaining about the level of debate but then ignoring the actual debate that is going on seems a bit redundant don't you think.

We're mainly talking about the design of it. His original suit was full of hard-edges, shiny, made of metal and most importantly, the joints were smaller than the rest of the body making it look un-human.

With this one, everything is super smooth and even, re-enforcing the look of a guy wearing a suit.

Looking more human is only going to run into even more problems as well if the film isn't R. As his transformation from Murphy into Robocop is already muted with this design, and even more so if they can't graphically show what happened to Murphy to require it.

Sets up the need for a lot of heavy-handed soul-searching from Robocop.

Well it's hard to reply to a post that had barely anything to do with mine.

Eh? Many have already written off the film based on these two pictures. It's insanity.

This obviously isn't what we'll see onscreen. It doesn't look all that cool on here, and it sucks that there's no throwbacks to the original design, but I'm still optimistic.

How can you be so positive about this movie? We have heard nothing but bad things about this movie and it's production. Second, i gotta assume you love Metal Gear Solid cause this is the only reason you would support the ugly ass costume so much. That or you are the producer on this movie because you sure are defending the hell out of this movie.

The only way they can improve this suit is if they CGI the hell out of it after filming is wrapped but i highly doubt it. Just like with the Total Recall remake sucking so hard, this will to most likely.

I simply love Padilha's Elite Squad movies, so I have some faith. And rather than defending it I'm merely keeping my mind open, unlike most who are willing to disregard it completely because Robocop isn't the same walking trashcan, based off two off-set pictures.

And this costume is more visually appealing to me, even if it's not that original. It's far from being "ugly ass".

To me it seems like some are using the Robocop remake as an excuse to vent out personal frustrations, because the reactions are really quite ludicrous. :p

People saying that it was an iconic design ...

Enoght to be higly copied.

So how they make a critique to consumerism ?

By doing the reverse ! xD
Take the style of every armor and stuff and make a "clone" =P

Also, black robots rule

Besides, it is the version 1 if that leak is correct

But if you are going to say bad things about the design, say like this :

Well, it's certainly different!

So the way you diss the original makes it seem like you are not a fan of it at all, i gotcha. I do appreciate your opinion but come on, there is a reason people are not happy with this suit design.

You doubt it? So you honestly think that what we're seeing right now is what we're going to see in the theaters? You're delusional.

What makes you think this isn't the final suit? Why would they give him such an intricate looking suit to only cover it up with CGI? Have you seen what RDJ wears while he films Iron Man? He literally wears the helmet while the rest of his body is just more or less a spandex suit with some markers on it for the CGI effects.

Bit shinier + some lights = the viral teaser.

That's all that's going to be happening here I think.

Dude, I love Robocop. The image of the mutant becoming spraypaint all over the windshield is seared into my brain. I even had a friggin life-sized helmet as a kid, gatling gun included(not sure if Robocop ever used that but that's what it came with). Hell I watched the cartoon too! However, Robocop is not a particularly good looking character. He's garish and looks cobbled together. That's what he is. He's not a sleek looking piece of machinery. Just because I'm saying this doesn't mean I'm dissing the movie.

I understand having strong feelings for the original design but writing the movie off because a 2013 Robocop doesn't look like the 1987 guy seems disingenuous. He was never going to look like that. Maybe I had already prepared myself for a big change which is why I was actually pleasantly surprised when I noticed they retained the visor and the basic structure of the head. :p

I see, it is just the way you trashed it above that made me think you we're not a fan. For what it is worth to me, the suit isn't cheap or thrown together. It worked perfectly in my opinion for what they we're conveying, a RoboCop.

While with the new one, it looks like he is just wearing an exoskeleton ala Crysis and not an actual robot.

Aren't you focussing as much on the suit as the people you claim are wrong for doing. What about all the problems the change in premise and direction from the original opens up? Which includes the design, but leads to much bigger problems.

Why do you think 90% of Padilha's ideas were blocked? Maybe because the change in direction means its unfilmable to the rating the studio wants. And by being unfilmable it means the satire can't work nearly as well as the original which took on consumerism not militarisation. This one would be incredibly dark if it did the same.

I haven't seen anyone explain why this design is good yet apart from saying the original one 'wouldn't work now'. Or say this new design is anything but generic.

The new design wouldn't be as good in the context of the original, and to work in the context of the remake it needs a film which we are VERY unlikely to get.

Well, because as far as I know, this isn't a sci-fi original movie. They have more than 12 dollars for the budget.

Also, RDJ wears a variety of suits during the filming of Iron Man, depending on what needs to be done with his character. It's not just one spandex suit with mocap markers.

Turok, here you go. This is what Downjey Jr wore for Iron Man filming, this is what we would see with the new suit in Robocop more or less if it we're to be CGI'd.

These things always look better under proper lighting conditions.

This is what the Batman suit that keeps getting referenced to in this thread looked like in one of the first set pictures we got of TDK:

HU6L1.jpg

Does he look like that in the movie? Hell no.

I see, it is just the way you trashed it above that made me think you we're not a fan. For what it is worth to me, the suit isn't cheap or thrown together. It worked perfectly in my opinion for what they we're conveying, a RoboCop.

What works for one movie may not work for another. This movie is just taking the basic concepts and ideas of Robocop. I agree that it doesn't look very robotic, but we don't know much about the movie. There might be reasons for the way it looks. Maybe this Robocop needs the extra mobility and isn't going to be just a walking tank that moves at 1 mile per hour.

Also, it is 2012 and not 1987 and the idea of what a cyborg can look like is vastly different today. :p

I don't think it has to be the same suit but at the same time it doesn't stand out for what's supposed to be a whole new type of cop. Thematically it's pretty shit.
