The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

It's actually pretty depressing people are rejoicing over this. *sighs* I knew people hated him but... jeez.

You know what's funny, I slowly stopped watching Brad Jones because I noticed his fans were some of the biggest douchebags out there. It's sad because I don't even hate Brad. I was a big fan of him. For whatever reason, ever since seeing the ugly side of his fans, I just slowly lost interest in Brad's work, and I still think he's a great reviewer.

That's kind of disappointing, honestly. I mean, for his actual reviews, he was certainly running out of material, but there was still quite a bit of potential in some of his alternate offerings (Old vs. New, Raiders of the Lost Story Arc, etc). I wonder if whatever he intends to do next will expand on those? He's really good at his more "serious", less "screamy" material, honestly.

What about his fans? How do you even encounter them..?

I liked his Christmas reviews.

That's a shame. I met Brad at a convention and he's really really nice. It's like his fans are the type of people that he's mocking (actual film snobs), or they think Brad legitimately hates the movies he reviews (in reality, he likes most of them, but has made it known when he doesn't like something, like Las Vegas Bloodbath or Nukie).

Brad is great, as long as he keeps his dumb wife out of his videos. And I legitimately enjoy some of his friends, too.

Brad has gotten like, frighteningly skinny lately. It's a bit creepy, in a "The Machinist" sort of way...

Also, did you know Jew Wario is like, 41? I think he's older than everyone else on the site by far.

Yeah. J-dub doesn't really look 41 does he?
The second oldest I believe is Nash of Radio Dead Air, he's like in his mid-late 30's. It's actually kind of creepy when you know he's dating anime reviewer JesuOtaku, who's 22.

This is where the thread gets weird. I hate when these people's personal lives gets dragged through the mud by viewers.

Brad Jones is the best person on the website. Noah Antwiler is the best person from the site not on the site. JesuOtaku is the smartest person on the site. Her Neon Genesis Evangelion analysis is brilliant. She actually gives rebuttals to the philosophies present in the show.

Doug made a smart decision to do something new. Wish James would do that. Then again I don't like James for the AVGN, I like him because he's a knowledgeable interesting guy.

People don't like him? Don't see how he's particularly offensive... less abrasive than AVGN, I would say.

Either way, I much prefer his genuine criticism of films (see Disneycember) to the theatrical stuff.

JesuOtaku lost a lot of my respect when she dissed How To Train Your Dragon. :p

One thing that drives me nuts in every one of his non-critic videos is that he always spends like 2 minutes at the front of the video basically apologizing for having an opinion.

So I've read up on the Spoony controversy from earlier this summer. Why did all the Youtuber's make it more complicated than it actually is? He said some outrageous stuff and then blew up when he was suspended. Starting an Internet war over it or defending his actions is typical stupid behavior.

Never said Brad was a bad person. Just that his fan base made me slowly stopped watching him, and I got NOTHING against Brad. I honestly don't even know why. I know he's a great guy, got to ask him a few questions before.

BTW, while we're on the subject of TGWTG. JewWario is doing a kickstarter for his FamiKamen Rider series.

The problem with Brad's fans is not that they are snobby, it's the opposite - they unite under the banner of his anti-snobbery schtick without realizing that he's mostly just having fun with it. He and his friend Jake did a long, negative review of The Tree of Life that was, in terms of content, not very good, as they were clearly out of their comfort zone and miss several key things about the film (for example, they say at one point that the dad is "not that bad" and wonder at the fact that the kids celebrate when he's gone, without displaying the awareness that that's really the point, as the movie is in the memory of a man looking back on and evaluating parts of his early life, especially his relationship with his father and brother). But, good or bad, they are, at least, honest, and they admit that it's ultimately not for them. If you read the comment section, though, some of his fans become extremely vitriolic at the very idea of somebody enjoying the movie. Brad seems like a genuinely nice guy who has built an internet niche around the fact that his preferred genres (horror and exploitation) have mostly been savaged by snobby critics in the past; he pokes fun, but he's generally pretty magnanimous and affable about the whole thing. His fans, though, seem generally quite a bit more bitter and angry - or worse, they idolize the man so much that if he diverges from the opinion that they think he should have, they become whiny and petulant.

Each of the "main" reviewers fits their niche pretty well. Doug is the everyman, the guy everybody who knows who makes alot of lame jokes and yells alot but is strangely likable and charismatic nonetheless. Linkara's the overly analytical but extremely thorough (and somewhat more conservative) nerd. Brad's the guy with a certain blue collar appeal - smart, but with a very approachable and snarky personality, as well as a healthy love for trash and sleaze. Nostalgia Chick, by far my least favorite, is sort of a "jack of all trades, master of none" type - kind of funny, kind of insightful, but mostly just boring, in my opinion; still, she has her place. Spoony is, well, the real cliche - probably the most genuinely creative and intelligent person on the site, as well as the most consistently funny (when he's "on", that is), but with a number of self-destructive personal flaws that seem to drive a wedge between him and others.

Thank god. His videos are so bad. My friend would always force me to watch them and would elbow me when I didn't laugh. I loved it when Retsuprae made fun of how bad he is and how bad that one Simpsons LP was.

You do know that criticizing his LP is pretty much pointless because even he is open about how crappy it is, right? So even if you make fun of that you're just agreeing with him.

I dunno about NC. I watched a lot of his stuff, but only because I wanted a recap/nostalgia boost. All his complaining really got in the way and bothered me. I mean, sometimes it was funny, but mostly it just detracted from the nostalgia boost.

I assumed it was a send-up when I first watched it. Frankly, I still wonder if it was but it didn't succeed enough at that either.

Isnt this the case with a lot of the fans for Internetreviewers?

At least from my experiences you can not even legitimately criticize one "review" without stirring up some commotion. And as much as I liked the NC, even he himself was sometimes really "harsh" to people who criticized a review when he made an error. Sometimes if too many people called him out on that, he accepted it, but if its just 1 or 2 he always told something like "Its my review. Just shut up!".

Something along the lines. At least thats when I still read some comments. Already 2-3 years ago though.

Doug was actually pretty good about that sort of thing, IIRC. He had a semi-regular special devoted to addressing fan complaints and nitpicks, and often admitted that he fucked up.

I like her because instead of making a show by simply whining about a movie, she actually does some research on the topic. That way her criticism looks more... intelligent than simple "I don't like that, it's stupid!".

Yeah. Her recent Cool Runnings review was a good example of research. Also a reason I like SFDebris so much, he almost always does some good research before doing a review, unless there's a good reason not to (He recently did the first Evangelion reboot film, and did no research as the film was said to be totally accessible to newcomers and he wanted to test it).

When he first started it was just him. But he brought on so many different reviewers and has a real company churning out reviews of everything from movies to comic books to lamps to video games. I love The Nostalgia Critic, but he's been doing it for 4 years now. Over 4 years because it took so long for the 4th anniversary, it's probably been more like 4 and a half years. He's got so many characters he's done himself. You forget that Critic is just a character. Doug can do other characters. It's time he does one. I look forward to seeing what they came up with.

I discovered him when the AVGN posted a video about a feud between him and an AVGN ripoff called the Nostalgia Critic and the two got in a staged fight and ended up with the 1-year anniversary brawl. That's when I discovered the awesomeness of internet reviewers. Since then I've been a loyal follower of not just numerous reviewers on TGWTG, but AVGN, RedLetterMedia, and countless other non-affiliated reviewers. Now I don't watch every single reviewer on TGWTG. I don't read comic books so I've only seen a few Linkara reviews (Mainly a review of a comic book about the Game Boy) and don't watch Anime so I don't really follow JesuOtaku, and there's like a dozen other reviewers on the site I don't even know who they are or what they do. I also really don't have an ending to this paragraph.

I'm glad to see he is able to know when to move on. Here's hoping his next characters are fresh and great or something. I personally think that the Nostalgia Chick has filled the role of Critic very well in recent years. She started out as a carbon copy that was picked from a casting call to find a counterpart that could review female nostalgia. But she's really moved into more male centric stuff as well as female centric stuff and even has her own team of helper reviewers. I think Lindsay could keep the Critic alive while Doug goes on to do more things. This is a good thing.

Now.. I just wish they'd hire a competent website designer to make their site easier to navigate. It's a pain in the ass. Hard to find anything. The search sucks if you want to find something old. (Ever try finding all the separate parts to any of their other Anniversary specials? In order? Without ending up with other stuff mixed in?) There are no thumbnails for anything on the main page. The main page doesn't even have every reviewer on there. (So how are you supposed to discover a new reviewer without stumbling onto them?) It's just a pain to navigate so much.

Good luck, Doug! I look forward to seeing what you've come up with next!

So what happened in To Boldly Flee? I've never watched their films.

-spoony gets mind-melded with mati like mccoy in the search for spock (mati had died in the previous movie-thing)
-nc feels remorse for the death of mati and decides to look for him in 'the hole'
-the hole turns out to be a giant plot hole filled by mati for some reason
-nc and all the other reviewers go to there and nc walks through the hole
-nc meets with doug walker, who tells him he's a creation, and that he's free to go out on his own
-given a choice between going out into the real world or saving his friends, nc saves his friends. mati moves on, and the hole destabilizes
-nc winds up merging with the plot hole to save everyone
-everyone goes back to normal in a world that doesn't make any sense. nc is now the center of the universe or something.

there's also a bunch of subplots, like the romance stuff between nostalgia chick/lupa/todd, and brad jones taking luke mochrie on as his apprentice. i think the only part that really stands out for me is spoony-as-turl. i didn't care for it in the battlefield earth review, but i thought he was pretty funny here.

It was after the fact, in one of his “Top 11 Fuck-Up" videos.

Not really. He addressed them way before that via his social media stuff. He pretty much admits he just needs some random material to do for that week.

Eh, I agree and disagree with him unlike most people who watch similar videos who are all yes-men.

For instance, I agree with his stance on Tom & Jerry the movie but I disagree on his stance on The Last Action Hero. But at least he puts his opinion well and despite that he acknowledges that people may hate/like the movie.

Funny thing is, I disagree on Jingle All the Way but agree with him on Last Action Hero. I think LAH is worse than JAtW.
I also majorly disagree with him on Spider-Man 3 "being the same as the first two" as well his hate of Matilda.

It's just the vocal people that sound like yes-men, when there's plenty to disagree with. He even made (out-of-character) lists on movies he hates but everyone likes, and movies he likes but everyone hates (X-Men 3 topped the latter, something Brentalfloss and Nostalgia Chick greatly disagreed with)

Oh yes his true-self discussing those movies are cool and pretty funny (albeit I was taken aback by Cars - lots of people hate it or at least feel indifferent about it).

I sorta see his view in Matilda but then again I don't really like Roald Dahl's works save for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This is a god thing. This guy and his friends were never funny. Not only that, he really tried way too hard, so it was awkward in addition to being unamusing.

I don't see where the fandom comes from, but then again people on GAF actually liked Spoony so it's not surprising.

You say that as if you think he's ending the site. He's just retiring a single character. All his friends will still be around and he will be back as a new character. He's not going anywhere. They bought a studio to do more stuff more quickly and more professionally. You don't like their stuff, then you don't need to be in here. Why are you in here? Do you watch it just to hate it? Because you speak as if you've seen every single thing they've done.

This thread is for people who are interested in TGWTG and their future. Not for people who think he's hanging up the.. uh.. whatever it is you hang up when you retire.

What Spoony said actually mirrored that of what Apollo Z Hack said. The website design is a real problem for a lot of the producers. Their stuff just gets buried in too many menus. The thing about dating is also a very good point, since one of the main reasons Apollo left was due to a bad break up with Obscurus Lupa.
