New Super Mario Bros. 2 |OT| Coins!

So I'm at the end of world 3 and I'm pretty underwhelmed so far. My girlfriend only got a 3DS XL last month, so for the last few weeks I've been 100%ing Super Mario 3D Land which is easily one of my favourite Mario games now.

Going from that to this is pretty striking. I think it's inferior in almost every way. Not bad, of course, just... a bit plain.

Can I get a simple yes/no answer to the following question which is a spoiler about 3D Land:
Is there awesome post-game content? Eg new levels like 3D Land?

Yes.
There is a world 9 which has an end castle and boss unlike world 9 in NSMB Wii.

Good stuff... although that sounds a bit bare bones compared to 3D Land.
Imo coin rush > overrated "post game" content

Seriously, I love SMG2 and SM3DL, but the way people rave about their extras you'd think there was actually twice the content rather than a few new tidbits wedged between loads of wholly recycled padding. On the flip side, coin rush mode, which I assumed would be a complete throwaway, actually fundamentally changes the way I play the game. It actually surprised the hell out of me, when I had the epiphany that I was leaving my 3DS on in sleep mode for days at a time just so I could replay the same level pack again and again trying to perfect my technique. As superficially lame as it initially seemed, it might be the best unique addition in the whole of the NSMB series.

Yeah, Coin Rush is a great addition to the series (much better than the rehashed levels in 3DL), though in the future it'd be nice to have more options like single-level runs and the option to create your own packs. The challenge mode and boost rush in NSMB U look similar in spirit to Coin Rush though so I'm hyped for that.

Just picked this up yesterday and Im loving it. Coin rush is fantastic, but I'm a sucker for beating personal bests so I'm biased.

I never used a the White Raccoon suit, but my stars still aren't shiny!
I've had the box appear multiple times though, and I'm going through and completing all the levels anyways.

Well finally finishing the game up. Pretty much just having fun on Coin Rush mode now and (maybe) going for a mil coins.

I wish it made a note of what levels had secret exits and I hate how if you enter the level quickly before the coins count up you don't get them. But other than that I thought the game was good. Will play again one day co-op with my GF if we ever get another copy, wont be for awhile though as I don't want to burn her out on it before NSMB:U

Only got 4 stars but not too worried, I have all the exits (as far as I can tell) but I'm told if you finish a level as White Racoon Mario it might not count. I know I did that one time but I have no idea which level it was now lol.

What are some of the more frustraiting levels I may have used it on? I'll blindly go in and see if I can fix it.

Just got 1 mil. earlier today. Looked up 9,999,999 "reward," f that.

Any idea when DLC is coming out? I really hope they don't wait until after Christmas...

I got the 5 shiny stars last night.
I am done with the game because I don't care for Coin Rush mode at all.

It was short, but fun. I don't feel like replaying it anytime soon, but I really can't wait for NSMBU.

Dear Coin Rush mode
Stop giving me Ghost Houses and Water stages for my second stage, it's really quite irritating.
That and 5-2, just stop.

Did you get the maxed out lives star? Seems more likely than the raccoon suit.

Yea I had that one. I ended up re-doing every level speed run style to find it. I started backwards (from the last world then going back) assuming it would be a later more difficult level I would have used the suit on.... turns out it was in the 2nd world. :| lol so I did way more than I needed to, if I had just started from the start and gone forward would have found it real quick.

Who knows why I would have used it then, prolly just the first time I saw it and wanted to know what it was/forgot all about it after.

Oh well, done now! I sorta want a mil coins but I dunno, I don't want it to make me dislike the game because I did too much grinding.

Five stars, finally. Either is game is bugged or the losing the shine can happen by simply touching (not activating, or even hitting) the cheat box. Because I am 100% positive that I never, not once, used that fucking thing. In fact, up until last night, when I had only a few more stars coins to collect, the three stars on my file were shining. Got the fourth (left lives to last) and they stopped. Bullshit!

Did you at least see the shine box at all on any levels? That can ruin it too apparently.

But if you can remember the stage maybe going in and 'cleaning it' (just complete the level without using/making the thing appear) will wipe it clean and maybe fix the shines. Thats how I 'fixed' my all exit star one which apparently wouldn't count until I finished the one level without using/seeing the stupid gold suit thing.

Its a pain to redo levels randomly if you don't know which one, but the box was still there for me so you could maybe just go in look for box and exit if not there or something.

I really wish they had a check list for this sorta crap, to tell you what level needs addressing. Other Mario games had it so its not really a foreign concept to them. :\

I think that it's kind of pointless to have something like that in place when the very appearance of the block in a level in question does that for you in the first place. There's not much of an excuse to not know which ones need addressing other than having ignored them, in which case the burden would be upon the player and not the game.

Well I didn't know about the suit thing until AFTER I finished the game and then went online to read about the game in general (didn't want anything at all spoiled) so I had no idea making the suit appear would ruin things so I just ran past it during play then weeks later had to remember which one it was.

Having a checklist with that info combined with things like large coins, exits found/still to be found in each particular level etc would have made it nicer than randomly having to check each one because you can't remember. Doesn't even need to say YOU MADE BOX APPEAR HERE just use the you haven't completed the exit 'properly' note and you'd know which one to investigate straight away.

Or maybe just allow us to turn off the suit's appearance in the options.

You beautiful man.

Seems like the star shine is linked directly to the existence of the super suit blocks. Even if you've never used one, you cant have one sitting active in a level. As you suggested, beating the stage again without using the suit clears the block, and returns the shine.

It was easy to check too, as the block continues to appear in any level it was made active, if you never finished the level prior. So all I had to do was boot a the levels and see which ones had super suit blocks, and finish them again to make it disappear. Easy peasy.

Cheers! Five sparkle stars get.

I am not sure if I understood correctly.
You had 5 non shiny stars, yet you never used the golden leaf box? How is that possible?

The golden box appeared several times during my playthrough (never used it), yet I never lost the shine on the stars.
If you revisited a level and the golden box was there, that means you cleared the level using the golden leaf the first time... isn't that right?

Simple questions with a simple answers that have most likely been asked quite a bit before, but I couldn't find it via search.

In your opinion, is this game better than NSMB Wii?
How would you compare it to Wii?

If you cause the golden leaf to appear, then finish the level without it, the box will disappear. If you quit the level after the box has appeared, the box will stay in the level on each load. It will stay there until you beat the stage without it.

For whatever reason I had the box appear in a couple of levels, but had quit them. Thus I had five stars non-sparkling. Went back to the stages where the box was active, finished again, got my sparkle.

- No it's not quite as good as Wii, that said there are some here that feel the more compact and less open level design makes it a tighter and more fluid experience than the Wii game.

- Compared to Wii it is pretty close on the whole, the difficulty here really seems to drop off when you hit the mid point and even the bonus world isn't anything special on that front, Wii may not have been very difficult either but it at least had its moments. Secrets are mostly hidden much better bar a few vine blocks that are placed rather randomly. Control seems to be a tad more fluid than Wii. coin Rush mode is a great pick up and play mode and while the coin gimmick is just that, a gimmick, there's something oddly compelling about it.
So i'd say Wii was the better game based on the strength of its later stages, NSMB2 isn't too far behind though and is much better than the DS original, just a shame they didn't do much with music and backgrounds for varieties sake.

Japan will receive DLC levels on Tuesday
Gonna stay out of the announcement thread. It's full of idiots. All I'll say is that the price is perfectly acceptable. I'm just sad there appears to be no discount or reward for those who have collected 1 million coins. I was convinced that would be the case.

Oh shit, I really wish I knew that BEFORE I got 9,999,999 coins... I did it via the infinite 1-up trick in the mushroom-1, then doing 1-2 and 1-fortress in the mushroom pack, which took around 4-5 minutes total to get 30,000 coins. Oh well, I have no regrets, I'm totally OCD about making sure my games are "100% complete", even if the reward is as stupid as this game's!

As for the game itself, honestly this game surprised me. I was worried that this game was going to continue the curse of portable 2D Mario games being medicore by Mario standards, but this ended up being either my 4th or 3rd favorite 2D Mario! (With my top 3 2D Marios being Super Mario World = New Super Mario Bros Wii > Super Mario Bros 3) I'll elaborate later if anyone wants me to, I got stuff to do so I can't right now.

The ingenuity of some people is just incredible. Maybe I'll go after 9,999,999 now...

Just tried that technique. It is really easy to pull off, but getting to 10 mil. would still take too long I think.

Just used this to get to a million coins in about an hour. So easy. It takes 53 seconds of playtime before it starts playing itself, which is ideal for the odd ad break.

Had already got 30K (shame it doesn't go higher, now), but if this gets well known, thinking that another few billion added to the worldwide total might not be too hard to get. :p

Maturity, bitches.
Thanks to Eurogamer I have a full set of coin rush challenges to go through. Surprised I haven't been getting that many hits for this game.

Bought the Expert pack from the JP DLC shop.

Pretty great, so far. I'm enjoying it more than pretty much everything else in the main game.
