Halo |OT10| The Calm Before The Storm

Is your body ready, GAF?

Bring on the lack of color and actors staring into the camera!

But seriously, Im excited and seeing Frankie and David both have good things to say so far Ill put my skepticism aside for now.

I'm betting they meant Meltdown or one of the other revealed ones.

Eh, but none of those scream HUGE at all. They all seem fairly big, but nothing crazy. Maybe the huge map got pushed to DLC and a smaller DLC map got rotated into the launch lineup?

I joined XBox Live the day after Halo 2 came out, I've played each release religiously, and I'd say I'm fairly competent at the game.

But can someone explain to me (like I'm five) how to properly use the Battle Rifle? I stayed away from it in every single game because I'm so awful with it.

In Halo 3 - 3 body shots, 1 headshot.

In Halo Reach, the DMR, pace your shots, 4 body, 1 head.

In Halo 4 idk exactly how it works. I'd imagine 4 body 1 head.

If its your aiming thats the issue, tone down your sensitivity and keep practicing

I think each map/gametype will have preset loadouts to choose from so you'll be able to have a BR even if you haven't unlocked it for custom loadouts yet.
Yeah, I think people keep forgetting this. I fully expect everyone in this thread to have at least the BR unlocked within 24 hours, but if not, we probably won't be stuck with ARs in BTB.

Dexterity is the must-have armor upgrade. So good.

Does HaloGAF still do weekly customs? I wanted to jump back into Reach before 4 comes out.
Naw, not regularly. Slightly Live has said he's gonna start them up again once Halo 4 comes out, though. I'll shoot your a friend request, and maybe we can get some games in soon. :)

Whattttt? Again? Damn. =(

I wonder if this means Activision said no to Marathon? Wasn't that what people speculated he was working on?
Yeah, that's the first thing I thought, too. It seems like it probably got canned, or Lehto wasn't happy with how it was turning out... Otherwise, why else would he leave again so quickly?

I fucking sucked with the BR in Halo 3, although I played for the first time with ODST multiplayer experience. Didn't you have to lead people or something?

^That's one thing to keep in mind, everybody thinks you gotta land all 4-5 shots on the head, like it does more damage like the Halo 1 Pistol. It doesn't. Bodyshots work just fine while shields are up.

Marines still look silly. They look 12... Too scrawny to be taken seriously. That live action thingy with Halo 3 was awesome because they actually looked like marines (The one where they try to find MC or something). From what we've seen of FUD, it looks like someone is having a fancy dress party down the road and Billy and his friends are going as their favorite Halo dudes.

What the fuck why is there different bloom levels within the same playlist?? Can't wait for this sillyness to be over and for we to get back to a consistent sandbox across the entire game.

I'm going to go ahead and ask again. Do the pre-order skins ONLY apply to the armor set shown in the image?

This is going to be important info with this trading spreadsheet.

Yes, you had to lead. But, with Halo 3's God awful netcode a perfect 4 shot would normally turn into emptying your entire clip into the enemy only to watch him Gandhi hop away while you rage and throw shit at your TV.

Yeah i think there are certain skins for certain armor types.

That would be because they are not Marines. They are teenaged officer cadets at a military academy. Notice that Lasky is much more buff when we see him as an adult.

Which map is this?

One map in particular gave me a really excellent vibe – a mix of my favorite aspects of Blood Gulch and Waterworks. Don’t just mash those ideas up in your head to imagine the map, because that won’t really get you there. But you’ll know what I mean when you play it.

Whenever people call Halo 3's netcode shitty I always wonder if that's not just a placebo from hitscan to projectile. Halo 2's was fine, Reach's was fine, they both use hitscan; of course Halo 3 would feel shittier in comparison with how inconsistent leading would be online. I dunno, maybe that's just me. I could see the frustration in using 3's BR, but I can't see it being anything other than its projectile nature. If 3 was hitscan I don't think netcode would be brought up.

Granted I have nothing to substantiate that whatsoever.

Well that's because they are like 14, not marines, and using training equipment.

Nah, there is tangible improvement from 3 to Reach. Look at H2V's netcode, which ostensibly would be the same as the Xbox version and it's terrible compared to Reach (even when running on dedicated servers), folks eating shots left and right. Hitscan helps, but there've been massive strides forward. Modeling travel time almost surely exacerbated its issues, though, you're right.

Shows how much I've been keeping up with the info about the series. Well hopefully things look better as the story progresses and they get older.

OT but I have no idea why we are having a unit test in Russian on Monday when we just started this unit last week, and a vocabulary quiz tomorrow.

I could go into a long, drawn out essay about Halo 3's netcode. Going from packet loss, host selection, projectile weapons over online gaming (which are never good unless you play on dedicated servers), inconsistency (blood-shots, etc.), and even more stuff.

It's way too late to type something like that up.

Trust me, Halo 3's netcode is extremely sub-par. The game was built to be played on LAN not over XBL.

Best part about this map for sure. The movement options look AMAZING.
Seeeeriously. I can already I'm going to have a lot of fun sneaking around in the tunnels, EMPing + grenading vehicles as they drive by.

Yeah I agree, it's too late for this stuff and I pretty much pulled it out of my ass anyway so I'll concede with this. I just put too much credit in the weapon change.

Is mobility an armour upgrade as well? Hard to keep track of what is what right now. Gonna be a tough call for me either way.

If I remember correctly you can actually take dexterity and mobility at the same time... *shudders*

I'm still thinking about having a thruster, ordnance priority (faster ordnance drops), and mobility and try to abuse all ordnance drops (personal and infinity... mobility to get to infinity drops) to chain them together as fast as possible as one of my loadouts (next to my stealth/camo stuff). I imagine ordnance locations will definitely draw a lot of people in as well for fodder to get to your next personal ordnance. Would be crazy OP if you could get re-roll ordnance and ordnance priority at the same time. Get EXACTLY what you want. Sniper? Sure why not... Saw? Here ya go... OS? It's yours bro.

The Halo 1 pistol does the same amount of damage on a shielded opponent regardless of where you hit them, just like later Halo games. Headshots only matter on unshielded opponents and when the shot breaks the shield (bleedthrough).

1. Try different sensitivity settings for your controller then practice with what you feel comfortable with using in close and long range battles.

2. Use the left (strafe) thumbstick to aim more than the right (look) thumbstick. Strafing to dodge and aim simultaneously is ideal.

3. Keep your first few shots on the body or neck then aim directly for the head as their shields pop.

4. Use teamwork, stick with someone who is BR/DMR'ing as well and learn to team shoot.

5. Use more teamwork by listening to teammates callout enemies thus giving you the first drop advantage.

6. Use cover to pop in and out during a firefight, don't just fight in the open.

7. Look for your your teammates red death X and most likely you can BR/DMR to finish and enemy or two. Having the shield advantage will help you win BR/DMR battles more.

8. Learn what range you're good with the BR/DMR, for close quarters don't use the Br/DMR unless you get a grenade advantage.

9. Use grenades to deplete enemy shields then it's just one headshot from your BR/DMR for the kill.

10. If it's Halo 3 then you need to lead your shots by about 1/3 or 1/2 of a head width.

11. If it's Halo Reach then don't lead your shots.

12. Don't always stay in the fight. If you're losing and know you're going to die then run away, pop back into cover and give shields time to recharge so you can attack again when it's more advantageous.

There are many finer points but this will help improve your BR/DMR game.

Flamesword asked for homework help on a topic I'm familiar with. I just wanted to offer some help and then it turned into me being obsessed with doing his whole assignment. I didn't even complete it for him, I did it to make myself happy lol

That's what you get for playing social slayer.

I wanted to play BTB, but that would require it's population to be higher than the number of people who were ever officially part of Menudo. And ranked playlists give me hives.

There are 16,000 people on Halo 3 right now and 5,000 of them are playing Social Slayer. Three of the five players on the opposing team in my last match were Generals in the Social Slayer playlist. What tragedy could befall some one to make them play enough games in the Social Slayer playlist to reach General? I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, or even any member of the New York Yankees.

I switched gears and headed into Multi Team. In my first game I was teamed up with some one who clearly could not handle being in the lead. As soon as the Sir Steitzer growled out "gained the lead," he betrayed me then quit. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, indeed.

Changing the topic slightly, since we are rapidly approaching the release of Halo 4, I have begun directing iTunes to play my collection of Halo music on shuffle. It turns out, when searching my music library for the word "halo," I get 154 results, of which 153 pertain to the video games. The other track? T-Swizzle. In other words, it's a perfect playlist.
