Yea pretty much.

The ads suck ass though. It's the same ad all the time. We need a metro ad block now.
Yeah I spent more time watching the ad then playing the challenge, although I gave up as I could tell I didn't have the intellect to solve it.

Why are Windows 8 apps so ugly compared to the "original" Metro designs? I installed the Zune software for fun and it's just so much better looking than pretty much every single Windows 8 app.

heh yeah. I used the developer preview over a year ago.

Same, weird feeling that everyone will finally be purchasing Windows 8 devices in stores and upgrading their machines.

A lot of friends of mine have seen ads for Surface and Windows 8 and think it looks awesome.

yup, same here. I've been using it as my main OS since the Developer preview.
I assume you mean consumer preview. I only did the dev preview in a vm, that was buggy as hell.

yeah the metro look is a lot better than just static tiles like on iOS and the widgets on Android. Should get noticed when people browse best buy etc... The only problem I have with the tiles is that it doesn't look as good on larger screen, aka when its about 6-7 tiles in a row.

it seems like having great artistic designers or whatever is really important with these applications. They can be really ugly or really good looking.

What apps in particular are you talking about?

Metro as a design language is very tricky to get right. Just look at most of the third-party Windows Phone apps vs the first-party apps.

Nope i actually used the buggy developers preview as my main OS since i wanted to get familiar with it as fast as possible. It did suck since there was practically nothing to do on it at that point.

Well ... pretty much all of the default ones. I mean, compare an app like the Stocks app (Win 8) to the Zune desktop software or anything on WP7. The Stocks app is horrific looking with a bunch of boxes arranged in a 3x4 format. It's like the whole design language changed or something from Zune -> WP -> Win 8.

The Stocks app doesn't exist anymore...? Are you talking about Bing Finance?

i like every bing application except for the weather application. I love the big images that you are presented with when opening the application too. The sports application really needs college sports though and I don't really like some of the news sources going to the website. If you can't get the news in that clean layout then i'd say don't bother with it. And the weather application is annoying with the scrolling, the live tile is nice though.

Wow, the trackpad gestures are a complete ripoff of OSX.

Most of those are custom Logitech gestures AFAIK. Windows 8 only includes:

Tap to left click
2-finger tap to right click
2-finger scrolling
Pinch to zoom
Right edge swipe (Charms bar)
Left edge swipe (application switcher)
Top edge swipe (application menu)

Yeah the cover image is fine but most of the apps are just a bunch of pretty ugly boxes once you scroll past it.

Is there anywhere with info as to how I can install Windows 8 upgrade?

I am currently running Win7 Enterprise and I cannot use that as an upgrade path but I do also have my WinXP Pro disc which I believe I can upgrade from. I want to know what I have to do in order to get Win8 installed, is having the disc and key enough or do I need to actually install XP and upgrade from it?

less than a week away from GA, feels weird. long time coming.

I hope I'll finally get it with GA. All the departments at my university have had access to it for a while through Dreamspark, except of course the Computer Science department...
They have their own server for Dreamspark content and still can't get it.

Yeah, anyone know the answer to this?

I heard you can do a clean install with a formatted drive, but there does have to be a qualifying OS on the drive first which gets formatted during the upgrade process..

I remember someone here said that a Metro NeoGAF app couldn't be developed but why can Reddit have their own?

Yeah... I didn't get that either. They made it sound like it was a matter of the kind of content discussed on GAF that made it illegal in the Windows Marketplace. It doesn't make sense to me that an application would be on the hook for user-generated content. If that were the case then aren't RSS readers, aggregators, image viewers and just about anything that can consume and present internet content illegal?

FYI: Amazon's current price on Windows 8 Pro is $68.88. Combined with the $30 credit, that makes Windows 8 Pro $38.88 which is cheaper than Microsoft's deal at the moment.

Interesting read about Sinofsky

For some reason I had the notion that Sinofsky was someone who was trying to have more interoperability between the groups at MS. Apparently, it is the opposite. Sounds like a man who can get projects done extremely well, but the job that gets done might be squashing innovative people and ideas.

My buddy was showing me Win 8 non his HTPC. He is a guy that works exclusively with MS software.

First he needs to show my the screen with the seemingly random colored and sized boxes, not sure why that exists, but he calls it the start screen I think. Then he shows me how easy it is to switch to the desktop. Fine. I ask why the other screen exists then, he talks about tablets and phones. Great.

I ask about the store and he opens it. So this is just MS using one monopoly to maximize profit in another area? He says probably. But he is happy, he wants more apps for his Win 7/8 phone. Seems like an anti-consumer position to have, but that sums up MS.

Then he wants to demo something else, but he can't remember how to do it. After fumbling around he realizes it was just right click on the desktop. Forgot what that even did, but the fact that he is stumbling around is funny, so intuitive!

I dunno, the whole experience looked like some 3rd party skin on Win 7. Completely unnecessary. Of course it is cheap to upgrade he assures me. Well ya they want to get me into their store, which will never happen. So I'll stick with Win 7 for gaming and Linux for work. I can only hope Win 8 crashes and burns Vista style so MS can get a course correction. I don't want a tablet interface to my PC, thanks.

Steam big picture mode is all I need ;)

Shit son you don't have to damn a whole OS just because you don't want to use it. No one is forcing you to go in their store. Windows 7 will still be around for a long time so you could stay there until Microsoft stops giving you security updates.

Unfortunately, that's GAF, and they don't know how to make threads. They just know how to shit up current ones.

Whatever it was, if it was a right click on the desktop in Windows 8, it is a right click on the desktop on Windows 7 to do the same thing.

What's the point of making up a bullshit story and feigning inexperience instead of stating your actual opinion? Are you afraid that someone might be able to counter it?

The proof will be in the adoption but I think if Sinofsky is responsible for getting everything under the Windows roof then he deserves a lot of credit for it because as far as I'm concerned it's made Microsoft's services appealing to me as an ecosystem for the first time ever.

Like the article says, Microsoft's problem is that they'll innovate the same thing in 3 different teams at the same time and then wonder why no one buys into any of them. Can you imagine if Live did have a separate cloud storage solution to Windows 8?

Companies as big as MS need people who are prepared to get things cut just because they don't fit their vision, because it's once the company loses the singular vision that everything becomes disparate and when that happens you lose the advantage that scale is supposed to give you.

As an aside, installed Netflix for Win 8 yesterday, wow the interface is brilliant, makes me excited to get a new tablet next month. Xbox Music has a way to go though, definitely sticking with Spotify for the foreseeable.
